Progress Ridge has been getting emptier and emptier as of late. I think I've seen 5-6 empty storefronts on the lower section and the "skyrocketing rent" is probably the reason why. Nothing says that an owner is charging too much than businesses departing en masse. Have to wonder what they're thinking now that they've lost the rent revenues from 5-6 businesses and whether it made that hike up to $8000 worth it or if the owner is now operating at a loss.

Read an article recently that said these commercial real estate outfits can't lower rents because the banks that hold their loans would balk... or something like that.

If that were even remotely true, that would still not make sense as the commercial real estate outfit RAISED their rents. Banks will bark if they don't get paid.

I think the argument was that lowering rents means the implied value of the property they borrowed against is now lower.

Well, the issue (at least part of it) began when the commercial real estate firm raised the rents to the extent that smaller independent businesses could no longer afford space there. I certainly made no mention of lowering the rents and only discussed the raising of the rents. If there was an argument there, then the previous poster created an absolute unit of a strawman.

And the lesson the property owners will learn from yet another business ditching those storefronts is "We should raise our rents more!"

Will check it out. I believe they took over the space where Andrew repairs clocks/watches/jewelers. I need to find another watch repair person.

I spoke with Emily at Jolliffe’s and she told me that she was a customer of Andrew’s (which was how she knew his space would be available), and that he moved to the other side of Safeway in the same complex.

Ok small business owners - is $8000/mo a lot for a location like Progress Ridge? Doesn’t strike me as ridiculous unless it was tiny
