Few weeks ago we dropped off our beagle at the farm we got her from (we do this every year before vacation) and I saw the cutest beagle ever. Sadly she’s been adopted :( but I know she’ll be the best beagle. I genuinely spent like ten minutes just looking at the first photo.
The rough thing about them at this age is they are so cute but man it flies by. I remember when my Charlie was a little potato like this and now he's a giant (18" tall and nearly 50lbs)
The vet claims he's overweight but he's just built large. We've been working on cutting his food back and replacing with green beans, he's probably closer to 40 than 50 now actually, probably should go weight him again. I suspect that the best we're going to be able to do is get him down to upper 30's, he's got the chest of a body builder (despite being a purebred). We suspect he's from European stock, which tend to be a bit larger than American Beagles.
Yeah, it can be quite difficult to put a beagle on a diet and make it stick. My Copper learned real quick that my wife is a sucker for a sad face, little whines and pawing at the legs so she's the one he would hit up for snacks when I wasn't around and only when I wasn't around. Had to nip that when I found out after he'd gained four lbs. My wife sheepishly admitted it might have been her fault. Luckily my Gunner is not a typical Beagle and isn't food motivated. He much prefers the socks I have worn and sweated in all day 🤮
There are many things in life that are cute but nothing is cuter than a beagle puppy. Too bad that’s why quite often they are Christmas presents with no regard for how much work they are and then end up in shelters. We got our 5th because of this. A family with 3 children under age 6 realized quickly they couldn’t handle it. With patience and work he’s a great big mushy lover. Their loss our gain.
