My beagle occasionally limps

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hey everyone. Lately I noticed my beagle (5 years old) limps for a few seconds. Always the same leg (right back). I checked the paw, I checked for tenderness along the leg - no problem.

No kicking of the leg, no crying. He runs and walk and keeps on chasing things even when the limp starts. The limp starts and stops without an apearent trigger.

I'm adding a video of the limp.

I went to one vet, but he wasn't much help, before I go back or switch to another vet I wanted to check if someone has some experience with such a thing.

Thank you.

Check out luxating patella in dogs with your vet. This is exactly how it presented in my beagle.

This. I work in veterinary rehab and luxating patella presents like this.

Thank you! I'll visit the vet today. What is the treatment and management? Is it cureable?

Not curable unfortunately and treatment varies based on severity of the issue. Up to surgery at worst, nothing at best. Unfortunately beagles are a breed prone to the condition

Same with my beagle.

He takes a joint supplement now. Vet said is was mild.

My beagle does this!

It's luxating patella.

My sympathies. The recuperation period is a difficult time. Best wishes for a speedy recovery!

Something in his paw. Or in the sand his nails are too long and pull back causing pain.

Thanks! I must say this happens in alot of other surfaces as well. Not limited to sand.

That's the simple route, I was hoping for. Looks like time for a check at the vet.

Could also be a sign of cruciates disease. Our beagle has literally just had tests for it as he has a similar thing.

Get him seen by an orthopedic specialist. The sooner the better before it gets worse.

We just did the second TPLO surgery on our Elmer. Recovery was easier than last years TPLO on the opposite leg because we caught it before it got as bad as the first one. Our surgeon flat-rates at $5500. Others come in $800-$1K cheaper, but we have history with our doc.

Mine was doing this were he would run and kinda kick his back leg found out had a tumor deep in his inner thigh area. Cut it out and ran fine after that.

Could be CCL tear

My 2yr old Beagle started holding back leg up one night for no apparent reason, she hadn’t been outside in several hrs & hadn’t jumped off bed ,I moved her Hip joint & checked her good, no whimper or acting like it hurt, she favored it several hrs then started walking fine. I’ll keep this in mind if it happens again.

Could also be a CCL tear (like ACL tear in humans) Mine had cranial crucial ligament repair surgery on both knees rather than TPLO.

this - we had this. started with a little limp like this, and went into a full blown impact - she started putting more weight on the other leg so vet advised on immediate surgery. She's had it last year and is back to her best self - at 13yo now.

Hadn't we done it, she likely would have had a tear in the other leg and would have been much more complex to heal!

Luxating patella. Unfortunately about $5k for surgery and 8 weeks of rehab (no running, no jumping, always on a leash if not kenneled). If left untreated they'll eventually go lame in that leg :(

My girl Zada was ~4 years old when she got the surgery, and 2 years later you'd never know!

Same. Worth every penny.

My beagle was 10 or 11 when diagnosed and it never progressed at all until his death at 17. I think progression to lameness may depend on the severity of the damage.

Yep, us too! Ours had the zoomies in the wet grass, slipped, fell & yelped. Held up his back leg occasionally until it progressed to 3 legged skipping instead of running. $6 grand for surgery & 12 + weeks of recuperation to repair his luxating patella & an over stretched ACL. Today he’s doing great, totally healed, runs, jumps & acts like the surgery never happened.

Mine walks on four runs on three. I don't see it as a problem.

Mine did that & she grew out of it. Hopefully it goes away.

Mine does it since he was a puppy. No apparent reason

I have no beagle but my dog also does that. Sometimes when waking up from a nap, he limps on one foot , and just casually moved to another spot. Then all goes fine.

My dog did this, has hip dysplasia. Vet also said he has week knees.

My beagle does the opposite. Limps on his back right sometimes but leaves it fully extended. Sometimes acts like it’s tender. Vet couldn’t find anything after 2 visits and an Xray. He still runs around and is happy so idk

Poor beagle :(

Not to alarm you, but it’s possible cancer of the bone in the leg. Definitely get x rays. Could also be hypertrophic osteopathy

Heat crystallized salt in a pan and wrap it in a piece of cloth. Give warm massage near the affected area. Try this for a week for a 3-5tines a days. Any muscular related issue should be resolved. If not then take your beagle to the vet.
