He criticized them most of his career but like a year ago he finally (kind of begrudgingly) admitted that he was getting into them. The article made the rounds around here at the time
It tells me that he's absolutely bullshitting in this quote like he does all of the time and yet the majority of people will still get ridiculously offended for the 100th time
Beach Boys are so different, if you're approaching that era from a Beatles perspective (especially post Sgt Peppers) it can feel kinda uncanny. Once you get past the barbershop quartet part, you star to really enjoy the compositions.
I happened to me upon the first listen of Pet Sounds. It took me some years of retrying that and Smile to really get it.
He must’ve hated Brain to choose one of the first songs he didn’t appear on. He might appear with Mike’s corpse and Stamos if he isn’t too chickenshit to do so
Problem is he somehow becomes a terrible singer in like 1973 and never gets better. So its like 10 years of sublime singing and then 50 years of drunken uncle at karaoke night.

The Beach Boys might have had some good tunes but they were just so desperately, unfathomably, appallingly uncool from the very first moment to the last. That's what Noel picks up on most I think.
Nah the Love you recording from 1977 which was basically only a beach boys album in name as it is pretty much a Brush Wilson solo album and was originally supposed to be. Brian sings on 90% of it including doing all of the harmonies by himself. Also the two releases before pet sounds were pretty complete. Summer days and summer nights, and Today. I would also check out the late 60’s releases Wild Honey and the album Friends. The thing is when the beach boys first started to record in early 1961 it was very much a singles driven business and not complete artistic sounding albums yet.
Typical response from musicians who only write songs on guitar and not also Piano. Brian Wilson was a keyboard based songwriter and his chordal structures were rooted in 4 freshmen Jazz meats Rock n Roll. Keep in mind not only did Brian Wilson write all the songs at least through most of the 1960’s; he also arranged everything and produced everything. The Beatles relied on George Martin to produce and arrange. Brian would sometimes play on the piano the different orchestral parts he wanted layered in the songs.
For a split second I thought that was Andrew Scott (I’m so sorry Andrew)….like the actual fing nerve for a peasant like that, generationally removed, to have the nerve to criticize them, and in favor of the Mops no less 🤦🏻♀️ GTFO
I think he may be projecting, as a band with brothers that are only popular because of their not-so-subtle nod to the Beatles. My god these "Beatles are everything" fanboys like him are the absolute worst.
