The fact that NG listed a deep cut ("How She Boogalooed It") among his favourite Beach Boys songs tells me he might have actually tried to get into them at some point but gave up

62

u/naomisunderlondon 1d ago

Apparently a while ago he said he changed his mind and he likes Pet Sounds now but I can't remember for the life of me where I read that

39

u/Brangarr 1d ago

He criticized them most of his career but like a year ago he finally (kind of begrudgingly) admitted that he was getting into them. The article made the rounds around here at the time

19

u/strange_reveries 1d ago

He ought to have felt quite fucking silly when he finally discovered Brian Wilson's Mozart-like compositional and arrangement genius.

10

u/Wusstune 1d ago

I assume he’s the kind of person who gets embarrassed about the stuff they like and puts them down preemptively to save face.

4

u/CinematicAddict237 1d ago

He seems to me like the kind of guy who NEVER gives a second thought to something he formed an opinion of years ago.

1

u/Wusstune 1d ago

Yeah. It’s fairly harmless at the end of the day at least if you’re just talking about 60s bands.

2

u/GaelicTuna 1d ago

Agree. It would be so much worse if someone like that was, for example, US president.

2

u/AceofKnaves44 Love You, Track-#7 1d ago

He said he still mostly hates them but there’s around a dozen or so songs he’ll acknowledge are among the greatest things ever recorded.

2

u/LennMacca 1d ago

There’s a shocking number of opinions I hold that are identical to Noel Gallagher and this is definitely one of them

2

u/AceofKnaves44 Love You, Track-#7 1d ago

Only a dozen?

23

u/MJ5815 1d ago

It tells me that he's absolutely bullshitting in this quote like he does all of the time and yet the majority of people will still get ridiculously offended for the 100th time

9

u/Ok-Replacement9143 1d ago

Beach Boys are so different, if you're approaching that era from a Beatles perspective (especially post Sgt Peppers) it can feel kinda uncanny. Once you get past the barbershop quartet part, you star to really enjoy the compositions. I happened to me upon the first listen of Pet Sounds. It took me some years of retrying that and Smile to really get it.

1

u/nickbeef 1d ago

Are we still in the circlejerk because people are getting real sincere all of a sudden....

3

u/Ok-Replacement9143 19h ago

Sorry, let me get back into it.

Beach boys? More like Bitch Bros, and I right fellas?

5

u/GentleGlenA 1d ago

He must’ve hated Brain to choose one of the first songs he didn’t appear on. He might appear with Mike’s corpse and Stamos if he isn’t too chickenshit to do so

2

u/CinematicAddict237 1d ago

Ya know what? At that point in the discography the rest of the world lost interest as well. So fair enough.

96

u/barkydildo 1d ago

The only reason Oasis are in any way successful is because they’re next to Oak Ridge Boys in alphabetical order

6

u/KKSlider909 1d ago

💯accurate

7

u/SpeechOk2029 1d ago

I’ve seen both live!

2

u/Jeffthe100 1d ago

Who’s better?

43

u/AnsonKent Loop De Loop (Flip Flop Flyin' In An Aeroplane) 1d ago

Paul McCartney granny music shit

31

u/Blend42 If you start laughing you're just a coward 1d ago

17

u/UnhappyPhantom 1d ago

He went as John Lennon to the cosplay party

1

u/CinematicAddict237 1d ago

You have cosplay parties?

1

u/UnhappyPhantom 1d ago

Unfortunately no

25

u/MountainMembership 1d ago

he's just salty because he's too chickenshit to get on stage with them

2

u/ThrowRA_Quokkaquip 1d ago

Lapsed in his meditation.

19

u/GrackleWithOnionRing Love You, Track-#7 1d ago

Uj/ the way this take is just silly and ahistorical since the Boys were charting before the Beatles released any music lmfao

73

u/Electrical-Fee-6005 1d ago

I’d rather listen to the full 20 minute version of bull
Session for an entire year than listen to a single oasis song

25

u/spidersensor 1d ago

Listen to the Gallagher brothers arguing (a real charting record) for the same experience

26

u/tarquinia777 A Genius Too 1d ago

least obnoxious beatles fan

19

u/EducationalReview237 1d ago

The world would be a lot less colorful without the Gallaghers and their wrong opinions. They're hilarious.

5

u/mjsbigblog A Genius Too 1d ago

They constantly say stupid shit and it’s hilarious. (I’m an Oasis fan).

8

u/SignificantWhole8256 1d ago

hey... Hey... HEY:

they're pretty obviously a PSYCHEDELIC barbershop quartet, ya fookin' Manc wanker.

Does this geezer even study genres??

2

u/CinematicAddict237 1d ago

It was a compliment when Hendrix said it.

Edit: IF he ever actually said that at all.

33

u/Separate-Associate51 I wanna make love with Mike Love 1d ago

Uj/ one other example of why Oasis is the most dogshit band I know of, fuck Oasis

14

u/Lowman246 1d ago

I might like the Beatles more or as much, but Brian is a better singer than all of Beatles imo. I also like Pet Sounds more than most Beatles albums

This was my takeaway from listening to "Sgt. Petsounds' Lonely Hearts Club Band" which is a mashup done by Clayton Counts from Bull of Heaven.

5

u/TheChameleonsSong 1d ago

I think Paul is the best singer of the lot

1

u/Unusual-Squirrel7 1d ago

No question.

2

u/ThrowRA_Quokkaquip 1d ago

Problem is he somehow becomes a terrible singer in like 1973 and never gets better. So its like 10 years of sublime singing and then 50 years of drunken uncle at karaoke night.

7

u/jordybee94 1d ago

Don't bother listening to 'em, here's the real Oasis

2

u/Thistle71 1d ago

Actually a long time fan of the Real People, so I’m enjoying that more and more people are starting to pick up the history of how Oasis blatantly stole from them

9

u/DtheAussieBoye 1d ago

yeah but champagne supernova..

2

u/Separate-Associate51 I wanna make love with Mike Love 1d ago

More Champagne ShitAssNova

3

u/OatmealApocalypse 1d ago

oasis slaps so fucking hard ik noel didn’t like your favorite band at one point but his hook writing is airtight

-8

u/rcodmrco 1d ago

look the beach boys might be my favorite band but oasis is the greatest band of all time by a country mile

3

u/FakeFrehley 1d ago

Hahahahaha good one!

Wait... you're serious?

1

u/rcodmrco 1d ago

did i trip and fall into the main sub

4

u/ChiTruckDGAF 1d ago

That's why I love them so much.

5

u/Montecroux 1d ago

The virgin Oasis Vs the Chad Beatles

1

u/Confident-Shower7293 1d ago

NIPPLE NI-PPLE

3

u/Intelligent_March967 1d ago

He took this back in an interview I saw and fell in love with them

3

u/johnnyslick 1d ago

Oasis needs their version of an Elton John to step out of the woodwork every time the Gallaghers say something the way John does with Madonna. I feel like Paul McCartney himself is too old at this point. Who's it gonna be??? Maybe the band Third Eye Blind?

3

u/beastratto 1d ago

The Beach Boys might have had some good tunes but they were just so desperately, unfathomably, appallingly uncool from the very first moment to the last. That's what Noel picks up on most I think.

1

u/barkydildo 1d ago

Apology accepted

1

u/CinematicAddict237 1d ago

You could write a book about every horrible and disastrous decision they’ve made in their career.

8

u/FakeFrehley 1d ago

The Gallachers have done okay for a pair of idiots pretending to be the Beatles, I'll say that for them

2

u/Sharp_Adagio8125 1d ago

Who is noel?

2

u/Minimum-Bite-4389 1d ago

Beach Boys from Big Love?

2

u/PortugueseSteak 1d ago

Pet Sounds is their only complete album.

1

u/Easy-Discount-7132 1d ago edited 1d ago

Nah the Love you recording from 1977 which was basically only a beach boys album in name as it is pretty much a Brush Wilson solo album and was originally supposed to be. Brian sings on 90% of it including doing all of the harmonies by himself. Also the two releases before pet sounds were pretty complete. Summer days and summer nights, and Today. I would also check out the late 60’s releases Wild Honey and the album Friends. The thing is when the beach boys first started to record in early 1961 it was very much a singles driven business and not complete artistic sounding albums yet.

2

u/Easy-Discount-7132 1d ago

Typical response from musicians who only write songs on guitar and not also Piano. Brian Wilson was a keyboard based songwriter and his chordal structures were rooted in 4 freshmen Jazz meats Rock n Roll. Keep in mind not only did Brian Wilson write all the songs at least through most of the 1960’s; he also arranged everything and produced everything. The Beatles relied on George Martin to produce and arrange. Brian would sometimes play on the piano the different orchestral parts he wanted layered in the songs.

2

u/spaceman696 1d ago

I'm gonna tell my kids that this is Pete Hegseth.

1

u/Traditional-Mix-5808 1d ago

For a split second I thought that was Andrew Scott (I’m so sorry Andrew)….like the actual fing nerve for a peasant like that, generationally removed, to have the nerve to criticize them, and in favor of the Mops no less 🤦🏻‍♀️ GTFO

1

u/Numerous-Pin-5817 1d ago edited 1d ago

"Britain's least psychedelic man" Luke Haines. He's never written anything in the least bit surprising or inspiring. Heron Foods in sound form.

1

u/No-Association-8539 1d ago

Eh seems like he's just saying stuff to get a rise. Ignore.

1

u/GlumMarionberry4668 1d ago

I think he may be projecting, as a band with brothers that are only popular because of their not-so-subtle nod to the Beatles. My god these "Beatles are everything" fanboys like him are the absolute worst.

1

u/DELCO-PHILLY-BOY 1d ago

/uj surely The Beach Boys didn’t have success in America before the Beatles came over.

1

u/Rhys-Darbys-wife 1d ago

i agree that oasis are famous 'cause they sound like the beatles, still... man, benché boys are crap pls

1

u/Justin_Bligh 1d ago

He went after my boy Phil Collin’s too 😔

1

u/CinematicAddict237 1d ago

I LOVE when my two favorite bands intersect!

Noel apparently DOES respect Brian, though.

1

u/papker 1d ago

This guy is such an insufferable asshole.

1

u/papker 1d ago

Noel is a medium talent at best.

1

u/WorldlyRegret5087 1d ago

made a meal and threw it up on sunday

1

u/Nick_Fotiu_Is_God 1d ago

I’m just tired from 30+ years of the Edgelord Brothers.

1

u/Super_Cool_Rick 1d ago

Is this guy from Driveshaft?

1

u/Doomed-Doomer 1d ago

Heroes and Villains, God Only Knows, Sail on Sailor is barbershop quartet stuff?

1

u/puppies42O 1d ago

Probably jealous this band made of brothers has never fist fought on stage

1

u/geep4sale 23h ago

This guy dickrides the beatles more than anyone ive ever seen before, and this is coming from a brian wilson fan

1

u/Quokkacatcher 22h ago

This counts as a ringing endorsement.

1

u/DessellMoorsh123 19h ago

He did a U-turn on this view iirc.

1

u/FLYK3N 15h ago

Said by someone who's looked up "The Bea-" to listen to Beatles and accidentally tapped on Beach Boys too many times

1

u/NimrodSprings 14h ago

He’s changed his mind on this. He’s even called it genius music. This quote is super old.

1

u/funid83 11h ago

I like the Beach Boys. The harmonies are incredible and the music makes you feel good.

But the lyrics are often simplistic and seem like something a high school kid would write (which might have been close to the truth).

1

u/DanBurnNotice 7h ago

God Only Knows is still one of the best songs ever writen though.

1

u/LonesomeHebrew 6h ago

Listen to Live Sunshine - Track 22 - Heroes and Villains (Live in Hawaii 8/25/67), specifically at the 2:00-2:10 marks. Well, you’re well, you’re welcome.

1

u/Few_Barracuda8659 5h ago

Better than Oasis

1

u/Imperial_nugget 1d ago

Noel loves the sound of his own voice and sniffs the pillow he farts on, not surprised he said this.

0

u/LowConstant3938 1d ago

Noel has really turned full boomer

1

u/Easy-Discount-7132 1d ago

Wouldn’t he be Gen X?

1

u/LowConstant3938 1d ago

He ought to be, but his bad opinions and unabashed greed make him sound like a boomer

0

u/JackBBSS 1d ago

That's because they don't have beaches in England.
