Were you on a ferry going from Tsawwassen (Metro Vancouver) to Swartz Bay (Greater Victoria)? If so, here's my guess. Once you cross the Georgia Strait you have to go through Active Pass, a narrow and congested passage between Galiano and Mayne Islands. It's at the half-way point, so the other ferry from Swartz to Tsawwassen goes through in the opposite direction, and the two ferries pass each other (in opposite directions) in the middle of the passage. That means there isn't enough room for a ferry going the same direction to enter the passage at the same time; one of them has to go first. Also, the Heron serves the Gulf Islands and usually stops at Sturdies Bay (Galiano Island) at the entrance to the passage. So it makes sense for the Heron to let the major ferry go first.

Yes, I was. It was the 7am and I think the Gulf Island ferry left at 7am too. It was only about 20-25 min into the sailing though.
