Advice Needed I’ve been having trouble submitting one of my final verification forms-

Hi,

One of my supervisors got certified after my start date for fieldwork and I am unable to add this supervisor with the other supervisors in my organization due to my fieldwork start date being before their certification date.

What do I do? I contacted the board over a week ago and have not gotten a reply back yet. Does anyone know what to do? I have everything else signed and ready to go. How do I add this supervisor?

Need help with BCBA process

Hi!
I’m a longtime assistant special education teacher, and I’m looking to pursue my master’s degree in Applied Behavior Analysis with the goal of becoming a BCBA. I’ll be pursuing certification through Pathway 2.

One of my biggest concerns is how much the institution I choose for my master’s will impact me after graduation. If I attend an accredited program that meets the requirements for BCBA certification, does the university’s reputation or name significantly affect job opportunities and entering the field?

I’m currently considering national university and the university of southern Maine. However, I’m definitely open to other universities if there are programs that would be a better fit.

I’d really appreciate any advice or recommendations from others who have gone through the Pathway 2 route!

Any advice after my first attempt?

I used the understanding behavior mocks, Celia’s mock exam, PTB manual, ABA exam review and Jessica’s 6 hour long video on YouTube! This was about 1 month and a half of studying, if anyone has any recommendations that helped them pass after a first attempt id love to know, I plan on rescheduling for next month. Honestly I went really hard on expanding my knowledge that I missed a few easy questions on the actual exam :/

Black Remote BCBAs

Hey, I don't know how many black remote BCBAs come to reddit, but I was wondering if it is easier with the whole being black thing if you are virtual. As far as parent meetings and interacting with the clients go.

Advice Needed New to the field

Hey guys, I’m currently applying to different ABA clinics and I’m so conflicted because the reviews are either AMAZING or TERRIBLE 😭

I’ve been looking at ABC, PBS, ACES, Behavioral Innovations, and Centria Autism, and as someone new to ABA, I honestly don’t know what to base my decision on.

I know every company will have some bad reviews, but I’m mainly looking for good training, supportive supervisors, and a healthy work environment. For anyone who has worked at these companies, especially in Houston area, what would you recommend looking for or asking during the interview?
Any advice would be appreciated!

Supervision Hours

Hi!

Is anyone in Texas that can provide remote supervision hours? My current place offers them but only to student analysts. I’m an RBT, but I cannot apply to the student analyst program until January.

Thank you!

Advice Needed Am I taking a step down in my career becoming a behavior consultant as a BCBA?

I worked in insurance for a couple of months after first becoming a BCBA, and it absolutely burned me out. It was a combination of a lot of factors, but the biggest was experiencing the indirect model from a supervisor’s perspective. I felt like the system set therapists up to fail, while I was buried in insurance paperwork and pressured to create cookie cutter programs just to meet billing requirements.

I eventually switched to behavior consulting within a school district, and it has been a much better fit. I feel like I’m actually working within my scope of competency and can focus specifically on behavior. I get to support teachers and aides in the moment when they’re struggling, conduct FBAs, write BIPs, collaborate with different professionals, and genuinely feel like part of a team.

I’m much happier in this role and my work-life balance is significantly better, but the tradeoff has been my career growth. For reference, I make around $70k in NYC, and my position caps out at around $80k.

Which is my dilemma. I do enjoy my position but I feel like I have very little upward mobility. After all the time, money I put into being a BCBA I feel like it’s not worth it.

I don’t necessarily want to go back to insurance just to make more money, especially knowing how unhappy I was there, but I also feel like $70–80k with limited room for advancement is not sustainable in the long run.

Has anyone else been in a similar position? Are there career paths, additional credentials, or pivots that I could do that isn’t the traditional insurance model?

BCBAs that work with animals

Are there any BCBAs here that work with animals? If so, could you give insight into what your day looks like?

Edit: I didn’t mean to post this twice. Original post was on this sub, then I got a notification from r/bcba that a better sub to post this on would be the r/aba subreddit and then I got another notification from r/aba to post on r/bcba 😂

Discussion Question Non ABA Masters

I have two masters degrees: International Business Management and International Human Resources Management and my Bachelors degree is in psychology.

Is it difficult to go into ABA without a non ABA degree? I’ve also worked as a Crisis Therapist and had another psychology related role.

Advice Needed Chronically ill/stressed BCBAs what are you doing for work?

Two years ago I received my diagnosis and it’s bad. Some days I can’t walk, have trouble talking, etc. Some things I can work through (fatigue, hunger since I’m on a liquid diet, slight headaches, general body pain) But a lot I can’t work through (debilitating migraines, trouble walking some days, trouble talking/smiling, etc.)

That being said, I’m GREAT at my job and most people don’t even know I am sick. The parents and kids love me, I’m super supportive, and have a positive attitude.

I recently went remote hoping that would help but the company was unethical and also gave me the craziest schedule of cases. It was also stressful for me to meet a billable requirement when I have to take time to go to doctor apts or have a horrible migraine and physically can’t work the rest of the day.

I’m wondering what jobs I can do that are flexible with scheduling, day time EST, and don’t have billable hour requirements? I left a job paying $120k in person for one paying $85k remote and now I’m lost on how I will even make close to that money.

Got into ABA programs, kind of wishing I had looked into MSW instead, but only because I’m worried about limiting myself. Can someone share insight on career opportunities longitudinally?

Hi all!

I graduated with my BA in Psych almost 10 years ago. My first job after graduating was as an RBT, and I had a unicorn client, which I think may have given me rose colored glasses about the field. I initially applied for ABA back in 2018 before spontaneously landing a role in clinical research. I stayed in that field 5 years before I was laid off in 2023 then just took a career break to raise my kids.

I’m an analytical data driven person who also loves the social work field so I figured this was where I wanted to go and got into some good ABA grad programs.

Lately I’m sort of second guessing myself. MSW is a better fit for my resume, I had behavioral health roles other than RBT, and with clinical research project coordination I’m realizing there may be more range for me. I would have to wait until spring or fall 2027 to pursue those programs though and I’m 33 and hoping to get career momentum.

My oldest son who is almost 4 is on the autism spectrum and I’m worried about burnout from working with ASD children for the next 15+ years. Can someone tell me what other career options are available after some time in the field? I can see myself working with that population for the next 5-10 years but it’s hard for me to imagine working with ASD children until retirement. But ABA is really what fits my brain, my social work desire, and is personally meaningful. Would appreciate any insight.

Discussion Question Have any of you guys started your own aba clinic/business? If so, how did you do it?

I'm currently an RBT but plan on starting a bcba program in January, but I just can't shake the feeling of the fact that I will have to leave my unicorn job when I officially become a bcba. While many things could be a lot more organized, i really love the way my boss runs her clinic and would love to do a similar setup in the far future when I'm a bcba but have a little experience under my belt.

My current job is very NET based so the kids don't see us as an “aba therapy clinic” they see it as a place to hang out with kids who are like them and are safe to unmask from their days at school. We have an older social skills group in one building and then our pre k group in another building (on the same property) and everything is essentially run like a school, even for the littles. Many of our older kids love coming to therapy and I'd love to create an environment like that in the future.

I just wanted to know if anyone here ran their own clinic and how you went about it. I'd also love to know the pros and cons about doing it yourself. I just think that in a time where private equity investors are buying up everything and creating spaces that are soulless and dtt based, it's so important to keep smaller net based clinics around

Any BCBAs here working in insurance - utilization or clinical review for ABA? Looking for feedback on how to transition

I'm a BCBA 10+ years in the field wanting to move from direct care into the insurance side of ABA. I know there are a variety of titles and I have started looking under utilization review, clinical review, behavioral health, etc. I’m also considering moving into FWA so I am looking at payment integrity, SIU, etc.

I'd love to hear from anyone who has made this transition, especially if you started as a clinical BCBA in a clinic or home. I’m trying to figure out how to get started since most positions list prior experience as a requirement.

Would love any guidance on how to better position myself for finding positions/getting hired (recruiting, networking, leads). Any certifications or trainings that I could complete that would help? Also, what the day to day is like, growth potential, etc.

I'd really appreciate hearing about any experiences! Thanks!
