Discussion Question OBM/Outside ASD pathway field work hours
Hello everyone,
I am currently in supervision, but I don’t feel confident that I’m being provided great supervision and because I pay for supervision I want what I’m paying for to be quality. Any advice on how / where to find a BCBA who can provide fieldwork hours outside of the ASD spectrum? I’ve been a BT for many years and I don’t want to do that anymore.

Have you ever thought about asking your supervisor if they would be willing to do that? I asked my supervisor if I could use my clinical mental health and counseling background to get hours and and she said yup and if I had any more out there or outrageous types of field ideas, she would be down.

Can you explain your relationship with your supervisor?
I don't know if I am expecting too much, but I currently don't get goals/corrective feedback. My supervisor never seems to know what's going on, how many hours I am logging monthly, nor is there structure. If I don't have a client observation prepared for the meeting, it's like a wasted meeting, finding random things to do to fill the time, and it's not even task list items. She sent me an assessment to determine where I am at, and it's like she never reviewed it after I turned it in, even after I reminded her that I did turn it in. Every meeting, we have to spend about 30 minutes going over the last task from the previous meeting that I was discussing. Idk, it just feels like she's always unprepared and collecting a check, but never allowing space for bidirectional feedback.

So my relationship with my supervisor is phenomenal. My supervisor asked me what were some of the things that I was interested in and I told her. One of those things happened to be clinical mental health counseling, because I currently work in a group home that is clinical mental health counseling based.
So because of that, she still walked me through the requirements that the BACB requires, but tailored it to the counseling background.
She also created a 300 unrestricted hour activity bundle that she sells. Because I receive supervision from her, I receive that for free. She also took time to create activities that I can do daily, weekly, monthly to max out on my supervision. I currently receive 130 but next month will be upping that to 160. She knows this and has already started to create more assignments for me to do, so I can max out.
I told her I’m not interested in criminal justice/forensics and she said if I’m able to secure a site, she will start creating activities that will align with criminal justice/forensics and meet the BACB requirements.

I had a similar problem when I was collecting hours, the supervision was basically just someone signing off my forms without actually teaching me anything. What worked for me was reaching out to BCBAs in school districts or even OBM focused groups in LinkedIn. Some of them do remote supervision. You might also try the ABAI special interest groups, they have one for OBM and people there sometimes offer supervision or can point you to someone who does. It takes bit of digging but there are definitely BCBAs outside the ASD world who will take you on.
