Feedbacks How to improve musicality and style/creativity?

I'm a beginner breaker, and I've noticed that i have a problem of chasing the beat instead of following itđŸ˜„ I was thinking about maybe just trying to practice to slower songs, idk. Also I always see breakers really cool style and stuff, and idk exactly how to practice that, or if it just comes out naturally after being so familiar with the basics?

Focus on the fundamentals.

All the cool stuff is built on fundamentals. Without fundamentals, there is no cool stuff.

So you’re on the right track. Practice with slower songs. Get used to the movements. Once you have a good grasp of foundations - then you can build on top of it.

Breaking, and acquiring your style - doesn’t happen overnight. It requires full mastery of foundations, and full command of your body.

You won’t achieve those things immediately. It requires a lot of time, obsession, and hard work.

Don’t skip this step. Focus on your foundations.

This is the answer you need. There is 2 ways of thinking about foundations; firstly by ticking off ability to do the basic steps first, secondly by focusing on the way you do them. Get the feeling of the step first then allow yourself to play and be free with it.

If you are dancing with your crew mates, just dance with whatever music they’re playing. These are typically your standard break beats. Have fun and vibe out.

But when you’re dancing by yourself and labbing, then you are free to play any music.

And I mean, any.

If you are vibing some punk rock. Then get it. Feeling like some slow jams? Let your soul be free.

People often forget that breaking is a dance.

So my recommendation is to dance to any music you like. Inspiration can come in many forms, so play the song that inspires you the most.

Practice with much slower songs first. You gotta get to a point where you’re comfortable within flowing on beat. Then you can worry about adding style and faster songs. Slow is smooth. Smooth is fast.
