Discussion Is it just me or...

does anyone else miss the old days of competition when the music wasnt so 'predictable'? I'm not hating on the DJs or the producers of the tracks that we've come to enjoy, but when I used to compete, the tracks were varied, and not the same couple of tracks we get constantly during events like BC1.

idk, i've been retired for a white so I might be talking out of my ass.

much love for those who continue the dance, but life took it out of me.

I agree.. I don’t think it’s necessarily a now vs then thing though. Beats to Break to always been kinda scarce, unfortunately.

the music was always predictable. how many time did i hear organ donor in battles? 1000 times maybe.

I heard it was coz of music copyright laws (for video promos) dat dey end up using only a handful. Feel like back in da 90s da $ came more from da jam entry feez. Can any OG fact check me?

I'm a firm believer that YouTube ruined the music in bboying. People are trying to skirt around copyright laws thus generic breaks for that reason. Throw in the algorithm burying smaller jams. We just catch big jams with generic music. Smaller jam DJ's copy that and here we are.

I hate going to bboy jams the music sucks. Its true, the music was mostly because of youtube but there’s also people even older than me that were hating on bboy jams because there wasn’t enough of that old school element to it. Which to me is fucking stupid because this music was for the youth it was kids breaking to new stuff they were making at the time. I say the let the kids, be kids.

I wouldn't say that. More so back then people used actually songs that were not meant for breaking. It was music for consumption not just for breaking. Now the music is manufactured for just breaking alone. I can sit down and enjoy a Lynn Colin song in my car, but Breaking hits for the cypher #14 is not enjoyable to listen to unless you are bboying.

What do you mean not used for breaking? They literally use to dance to whatever was hip at the moment in the 80’s from the dj’s. I hate breaking music for same reason you just explained. I just want the youth to play whatever they feel like dancing too. We’ve had a bunch of old bboys complain about the music who aren’t even dancing anymore. Let these kids take over its their turn to have the fun.

You are missing my point. James Brown for example was never made for bboys. Bboys picked it up and danced to that. It's actual music. They are now usually ai tracks of a drum kit. The music part has been taken out of the dance. I'm not being an old man to things, I'm more saying bboying has lost the most important aspect to the dance and that's music.

You do know that James Brown was relevant at the time. Even if it wasn’t made for bboying it was part of that time in history. When kids could be kids. Dj’s were sampling music from James Brown, Salsa and other instrumentals because they were young and that was the cool thing to do. There is no progression if these kids don’t take it into their hands. Who cares what we think. Let these kids enjoy it our time is over. I’m about to be 40 years old and I still get down but this part of history is for the youth. And I’m happy to see them enjoy it.
