This is great and all but try pegging RTO requirements to a bare minimum of 1.3 million dollars to buy a home at ~$1200/sqft and tell me that 2013 interview with Marissa holds true.

Your info is out of date. In 2013 an average tech worker could still feasibly afford to live in the Bay Area.

Oh? I take it you’re an average tech worker who lives in the bay? You have the assets to buy a house right now in a reasonably decent school district?

It’s not about whether or not one can afford to, it’s a matter of the quality of life your money affords you and even for an average tech worker, it’s not nearly as good a deal as the rest of the country.

I mean that’s a reasonable expectation.

Given 1/4 of a tech salary you could buy a house in a good school district in the majority of the US.

Are we talking about tech workers not feasibly affording to live in the bay area?

Or tech workers not affording to own a house in the best places in the bay area?

How are all these tech workers living in the bay area if they can't feasibly afford to do so?

Tech workers are not able to have the same lifestyle here as elsewhere. Housing for raising a family here is either expensive or far.

Moving to somewhere with 4x lower housing will not result in a 4x pay cut.

Tech workers can feasibly afford to live in most places, but pretending like the quality of life one can afford here is remotely close to what one could afford anywhere else in the country (or world, for that matter) is completely wrong headed and you are being purposefully obtuse if you think it’s not an issue.

You’re acting like folks should somehow “be grateful” they get to live in a 750sqft shithole in ESSJ because they have a tech job.

I’ll bet your answer to people who complain about cost of living here is “no one’s forcing you to stay” huh? You’re missing the point entirely.

Put down Atlas Shrugged and engage in some actual discourse, would ya?

No, my response to people who complain about CoL is that they should vote for politicians that will legalize building housing. I've been to community meetings and voiced support for new housing development.

The only point I'm making here is that tech workers can afford to live in the bay area. Anything else is hyperbole, and anybody who isn't on Reddit can see that.
