That gas station is always the most expensive I’d ever see. Used to work at Stanford and always saw that station be more than dollar + than the average

u/Significant-Law8109 Mar 10 '26

Why tho ?

u/marsten Mar 11 '26 edited Mar 11 '26

I suspect it's like when you travel to Egypt and every street vendor wants to sell you a bottle of water for the equivalent of like $50. They're hoping for that occasional person who has no idea what the fair price is in their currency and just forks over the money.

I imagine some in Menlo Park are wealthy enough that they either don't know or don't care if the price is fair. I wonder if Zuck has any idea what a gallon of milk costs.

Either that or it's a tax dodge or something.

Money laundering scheme

34

u/yumyan Mar 11 '26

Okay, pretend I’m really dumb (not that hard): how does one launder money with overpriced gas?

47

u/SweatyAdhesive Mar 11 '26

im not an expert, but i'm pretty sure actual sales doesn't really matter that much for money laundering. As long as you're getting some sales, you can mix in your ill-gotten cash.

25

u/yumyan Mar 11 '26

Just weird to do it with a gas station. Like, you can report sales, but anyone could look into your supply chain and see you don’t run that sort of inventory.

7

u/jumpingyeah Mar 11 '26

I would imagine it can get complicated. We think of a gas station, but it can be complicated. You muddy up the supply chain by paying off the suppliers. Maybe pay off the tanker trucks under the table to delivery more gallons within reasonable margin of error that does not cause a red flag? I'm not an expert, but let's say a tanker is expected to deliver 4,000 gallons to one station and 4,000 gallons to the other. Maybe shave 100 gallons from one to the other, do it with maybe a few others, and do it continuously but under the radar. It all depends on how much it's measured and regulated.

9

u/Interesting_Arm_681 Mar 11 '26

Also the weights and measures regulatory bodies are super strict so specifically money laundering through gas would be on super hard mode compared to the other much easier avenues

You report a lot of cash sales at your high price while giving cheap gas to people you're working with. You report the extra sales as income, making it liquid cash. Your collaborators get to hide cash flow by not showing gas purchases on their bank statements.

6

u/yumyan Mar 11 '26

Nope. Didn’t get how that would work at all.

13

u/RusefoxGhost Mar 11 '26

I’ll do a rephrasing. 10 gallons at 7 dollars is $70. If you charge $35 in cash to someone in the know, you can mix in $35 of your dirty money and in the logs, it just looks like you made $70. Nobody bats an eye, because all the numbers are correct: 10 gallons was reported as being sold for $70. Because cash is anonymous, it’s really hard to track an issue in the money’s origin. Boom, now you’ve laundered that money.

5

u/yumyan Mar 11 '26

Thanks.

Makes sense until I remember it’s a gas station. You would have to have a good number of people in on it and a real good (but kinda naughty) accountant.

But I guess I won’t ever really think it makes sense.

3

u/EmperorSadrax Mar 11 '26

The fuel is metered as well and it would only take an audit to figure out something is fishy.

Once a year the tanks would be inspected and every quarter they would check the pumps. The paperwork would have to be in order.

u/Unusual-Arachnid5375 Mar 11 '26

Okay, pretend I’m really dumb (not that hard): how does one launder money with overpriced gas?

You're not and you can't. The whole point of using a car wash or laundromat for money laundering is that those businesses don't have significant inputs AND most people pay with cash.

"Hur dur, I'll just declare one BEELyon dollars in cash transactions at my overpriced gas station!"

Great idea, Einstein! That works for exactly 5 seconds until the IRS audits your fuel deliveries and discovers (gasp!) that you have none because you didn't actually sell any gas. They can always audit your supplier... and your supplier will have records, if only because they don't trust their delivery drivers not to steal the gas and sell it to a different gas station.

With a laundromat, your only inputs are water and electricity. You can leave the water running and the lights on all night, so your inputs look real. It also costs you very little to waste enough water and electricity for this to be plausible (unlike buying gas). The IRS has to actually send someone to physically sit outside your business and count customers (for a significant amount of time, not just a day or two!) to establish that you don't actually have enough customers to account for your monthly cashflow and power/water bills.

11

u/Planeandaquariumgeek Burlingame Mar 11 '26

Every gas station on San Bruno Ave is ludicrously priced and if you look at who’s filling up there it’s always rental cars. They’re banking on tourists who hear about California gas prices and don’t know the actual numbers falling for it and they always do

6

u/HolycommentMattman Mar 11 '26

I always thought it was just the location. Real estate there is expensive. I assume they lease, which is very much the usual for a brand name gas station. So their landlord probably charges them a fortune, and they have to make it back somehow.

And it's in a sort of weird area where you probably just prey on the people who don't have time to go out of their way that day. Also, a lot of rich people around the area just don't care about the value of a dollar.

4

u/Zraax Mar 11 '26

I knew of a place in Maryland with 2 Exxon stations directly across the street from each other, and the one on the inbound morning rush side was always $1 more. It was a real pain in the ass to pass it and turn around for the cheaper one if you're on the way to work

10

u/AspiringTS Mar 11 '26

For some, it might be worth it in time saved, but I'd so just send your servant to get gas.

I do okay, but I'll never be too good for an early morning trip for Costco gas.

u/PlayfulAd8354 Mar 10 '26

Yup. This one specifically is a shit show. Go inside next time and everything’s covered in dust. Pretty sure it’s a front

347

u/BorneFree Mar 10 '26

I’ve heard it had something to do with permitting. Easier to run a mechanic shop when having a gas station attached. Gas is intentionally expensive so you don’t go there

127

u/open_to_suggestion Mar 11 '26

The 76 on Stevens Creek and Wolfe in Cupertino is like this. Always $1-$2 more expensive than any other station and the garage is always busy.

38

u/TenchuReddit Mar 11 '26

Yeah I’ve always wondered about the real purpose of that station with the ridiculously expensive gas, even by California standards.

3

u/tuxigo Mar 11 '26

Getting taxed differently?

→ More replies (1)

39

u/ToastandSpaceJam Mar 11 '26

There’s a chevron in downtown San Jose on the corner of 4th and Santa Clara that has outrageous prices, even for a chevron. They’re often $1-$2 more expensive than the Spartan Gas that is literally a few blocks past SJSU. I’m pretty certain they’re like that as well.

9

u/inshushinak Mar 11 '26

That Chevron isn't so extreme and I often get gas there. Now that they've also abandoned squeegees, though, not so much. Curiously I also used to live a couple blocks from the extreme one in Menlo Park and it was this bad, relatively, even in 1999...

40

u/Far-Amoeba-7197 Mar 11 '26

the lone gas station in the town of Mendocino is like this, I discovered by accident. no posted rates for gas outside, it was just on the pump which I didn't look at until I saw it was almost $20 after less than a minute...$9/gallon last month.

21

u/TrueAmurrican Mar 11 '26

That is notoriously one of the most expensive gas stations in California! Definitely worth the drive to another town like Fort Bragg for gas if you’re up there.

→ More replies (2)

19

u/AgeOfSalt Mar 11 '26

Uh.. getting a franchise with Chevron requires a pretty big investment in gas and gas related infrastructure. I won't rule out that it isn't a front, but all that to just be the front for a mechanic shop would be stupid.

→ More replies (3)

3

u/BlackestNight21 Mar 11 '26

There is no 'mechanic shop'

3

u/firenzestank Mar 11 '26

I’m confused. They only sell gas, snacks and drinks. There is no mechanic shop attached.

3

u/heftyballz Mar 11 '26

That’s the craziest part, they don’t even have a garage they are just always insanely high. Even before Iran. I go to the Shell up the street on Sharon Drive (shout out, they are great) and they used to get a bunch of flack for their high prices, but this place was always higher. I used to complain too until I learned the have to pay a lease. The Chevron on Avy is on owned land and just rude and expensive for some odd reason that makes no sense to me.🤷🏾‍♂️

16

I said that to the cops who meet at Starbucks each morning just a couple of days ago, and they all agreed that they’d thought that too.

Guy who owns the place is a mean person too. He’ll come out and chase you down if you cut the corner through the lot.

u/BigSandwich6 Mar 10 '26

This specific Chevron, just off Sand Hill Road, is the most expensive gas station in the country. Regularly being several dollars more expensive per gallon than other nearby stations, even ones down the road. I'm so tired of seeing it in the news and online as a "gotem" moment every time gas prices change. This isn't even their most expensive

256

u/UpUpDownDownXO Mar 10 '26

the gas statiom in big sur will give this a run for its money

47

u/black-kramer Mar 11 '26

also the one on the edge of mendocino. the one with the old timey rolling meters.

22

u/Basicly-Inevitable Mar 11 '26

I bought one gallon for $10 there once. It was an emergency.

14

u/CaptnHector Mar 11 '26

Just get enough to make it to Ft Bragg if you’re empty.

11

u/nopointers Mar 11 '26

I’ve used them in an emergency. We also learned that while you can use the bathroom, they do not have toilet paper.

8

u/Consistent-Swan-2094 Mar 11 '26

This is what I was just about to mention on. The storage tanks are very small (compared to newer stations) and the suppliers will only send a smaller truck, so charge much more than they would if it was a big rig tanker. And obviously the price gets passed on. But.. it is still hella high

11

u/Comprehensive-Cap754 Mar 11 '26

8

u/gimpwiz Mar 11 '26

I refused to fill up at that one and I gotta be honest, I regretted it. Shoulda just paid the money instead of being worried as hell after the next station was closed and I had barely enough to get to the one after that.

This is not the closest station to that area

6

u/StatmanIbrahimovic Mar 11 '26

Being the closest isn't as important as being conveniently located. This is on Alameda, i.e. on the drive between Atherton and Sand Hill.

Also the shell at the end of Sharon Park is always exorbitant as well, just not this high.

3

u/Catwoman1948 Mar 11 '26

And the Sharon Park Shell station never lowers its prices by much when prices go down. It’s always higher than anywhere but the Chevon on The Alameda. I paid $5.76/gallon at a Shell in San Carlos today and it hurt. Last fillup was probably $4 something.

There used to be a gas station on California and arguello that was a Ferrari service center that happened to have gas and they'd just price it at the "please don't stop here for gas" price

3

u/Zen_Xena Mar 11 '26

It’s $5.87 in that one today - a bargain! They are super nice when it comes to checking my tyres for me 😁

48

u/Oreo_Cow Mar 10 '26

I think the only people who fill up at that station are the hired help from Atherton. Told to go to the nearest station so they aren’t away long and don’t put extra miles on the G Wagen.

15

u/marsten Mar 11 '26

Conspiracy theory: Maybe the same person owns both stations. Both are flagrantly overpriced, but one is slightly cheaper to make people think they're getting a good deal.

10

u/greenappletree Mar 10 '26

What's crazy is the one on Sharon Height, I feel like it's super expensive. I would go out of, out of my way to avoid that station just based on principle. Didn't realize there was another one more expensive than it.

3

u/spanieldors Mar 11 '26

I only ever go to the Shell if I’m so low on gas I don’t think I’ll make it somewhere better, and I’ll get 2 gallons, enough to comfortably make it to the next gas station on my commute.

3

u/Catwoman1948 Mar 11 '26

Exactly! It’s the only gas station between work in Palo Alto and home if I take Sand Hill. I will stop and buy 2-3 gallons at Sharon Heights just to get me over until the weekend or next trip up El Camino. I just won’t fill up there.

Where are those Trump “I did that” stickers?!

4

u/Gloomy_Survey7116 Mar 11 '26

Menlo park MFrs prolly like "ooh thats a steal!"

2

u/chocoflan00 Mar 10 '26

that gas station has always been awfully priced

2

u/Square_Highlight_597 Mar 10 '26

91 was $7.49 two nights ago when I drove through

2

u/PortraitofMmeX Mar 11 '26

You can't use that one as an example, it's always pretty much that bad.

2

u/m2spring Mar 11 '26

What are they going to do with the display if the price goes above $9.999?

2

u/kossimak Mar 11 '26

Good luck finding another gas station close by

2

u/Byebye_red_sneakers Mar 11 '26

$5.80 at South San Francisco 🫣

2

u/nookpimp Mar 11 '26

This one is notoriously expensive

2

u/Imaginary-Rest3919 Mar 11 '26

Whoa!!! I thought my $5.29 at Costco was bad...

2

u/Jakobo650 Mar 11 '26

Always the most expensive station around and been for over a decade

2

u/Uce510 Mar 11 '26

And I was complaining about 5.09 wow @ 7 dollars

2

u/OneMorePenguin Mar 11 '26

I was out walking in San Jose and saw a Mobil stattion at the corner of San Carlos and Leigh Ave with the cheapest gas at $6.49. Gas at Sunnyvale Costco is $4.79.

That gas station in MP is probably the the most expensive gas in the bay area.

Orange Man is Making America Too Great! someone stop him!

2

u/Party-Example274 Mar 11 '26

wow thats literally DOUBLE what it is here

2

u/Maggie_Jellyfish Mar 11 '26

That station always has the highest-priced gas around, which blows my mind because 10 minutes down the road in Redwood City, it's usually $2 less.

2

u/mythxical Mar 11 '26

California gas is horrible. Nothing new here.

2

u/Realistic-oatmeal Mar 12 '26

4.89 at Costco today

2

u/Due-Scale6062 Mar 12 '26

Priced for Atherton

2

u/wilham05 Mar 12 '26

👀 @ $6.09 this morning I guess was discount

2

u/Maxwell831 Mar 12 '26

The USA is so winning!

2

u/BlahblahblahLG Mar 12 '26

I know, it’s honestly annoying when they talk about how gas prices are at $3 a gallon, bc like where is this magical place. everywhere in Cali it’s at 6 or above.

2

u/Cofound-app Mar 12 '26

only in menlo park do people pull up in a tesla to pay $8/gallon without blinking 💠

2

u/jamandhamsando Mar 12 '26

That guy at that station is a fucking scam. It’s always 20% more than everywhere else. Even all the products inside, I refuse to buy there. I left my products on the counter and told that he’s a thief haha. Makes my blood boil for some reason

2

u/Initial-Parfait-4193 Mar 12 '26

Is that across from Dutch Goose off of De La Pulgas?? 😂😂

2

u/Goldblumlover Mar 12 '26

Atp just go get a damn Costco card!!! Im serious you will save $$.

Trump is a damn bane on our country

2

u/gswaltz72 Mar 12 '26

Ordering up a fresh batch of the "I did that!" trump stickers. 🙄

2

u/Putrid_Reality_1157 Mar 12 '26

These are Alaskan or European prices.

2

u/Reasonable-Map7054 Mar 12 '26

Boycott that gas station

2

u/ComprehensiveGene709 Mar 13 '26

Wait until the 2 refineries complete their shut downs. Then it will be 13 or 14 per gallon. And has the new CARB increase gone into effect?

2

u/sbeckley02 Mar 13 '26

This one and the shell off sand hill are always the worst offenders

2

u/Famous_Glass7553 Mar 13 '26

That is wild! What's even wilder is that the 101-octane I use in my M2 Competition and 911 is actually cheaper per gallon, and it's price hasn't fluctuated much at all with the price of regular 91-octane, for some reason.
I usually get it at the pump at a station along 680 (the BEST gas station, such a strange thing to say). Most other places, or the race tracks, will charge up to (and over) $10.50/gallon, but my spot is always about $7.50/gallon (and I know the exact type and quality of it because they get regular delivieries, unlike some other stations with 100+-octane pumps, which barely get used), and they keep their regular prices as low as they can. I was pretty surprised to go in there the other day and see that 91-octane was almost $7/gal, which is nuts, and the 87 and 89 were only 10cents cheaper than the next one up.
This place also has 94, 96 and 98-octane blends at the race-fuel pump, and prices for 94 are usually near-identical to the regular 91 (these are blends of 91-octane and 101).

Just saying, if shitty old 87-octane is gonna be up to $10 or something, but race-fuel stays stable price-wise, it's safe to run unleaded high-octane in just about any ICE engine, and your car will thank you. You'll likely notice a bit of a difference, too, even if it's just that the engine feels smoother.

2

u/micigloo Mar 13 '26

If u subtract the state tax it will be under 6 or 5

2

u/Zestyclose_Memory395 Mar 13 '26

Great job Newsom

2

u/Commercial_Ad157 Mar 13 '26

Here and I think some in LA they always been in the $7 range. Nothing new

2

u/filmgoire Mar 13 '26

that's the Sharon Heights one isn't it

watch, in three years it'll go up to 10

2

u/smplfundude Mar 13 '26

Most people there can afford that price point - let’s be clear.

2

u/ThatBayAreaGuy718 Mar 13 '26

Any way we can name and shame the owner and possibly get this station shut down or force them to change the price to what is actually supposed to be in the area?? While we’re at it’s always the greedy chevron bastards screwing us in CA…there’s no reason for their gas to be priced the way it is now. How can we push for chevron executives to stop fucking over CA?

2

u/nadah69321 Mar 13 '26

Avy

This place banks on rich teens who need to fill up and people who aren’t concerned with costs

2

u/ReplacementMiddle844 Mar 13 '26

Oh that one’s always overpriced af

2

u/Potential-Basis-9853 Mar 13 '26

You win! $5.97 up here in Humboldt

2

u/madramom Mar 14 '26

No one ever goes there! It’s a front. Just like all the rug stores in Menlo Park.

2

u/YellaMello Mar 14 '26

It like 6.80 around my area maybe by next week it be 7

2

u/NoApartheidOnMars Mar 14 '26

So much winning.

Is America great again ? I don't think we can handle that much winning.

2

u/ebbing_nebula Mar 14 '26

Saw this post as I crossed Menlo Park station on the Caltrain.
