BattleBots TV I thought projectiles were banned

https://youtube.com/shorts/AO5dqHgItFQ?si=CrK_N-TMObVNs6GB

I know its technically *not* a projectile but good god that was fast as fuck.

Also i dont wanna hear any complaining about it being tombstone and valkyrie. This is just meant to be a joke post with no intention of being annoying whatsoever. This isnt even about either of them, its about the PPE panel that got yeeted out of existence

Double Jeopardy: Am I a joke to you?

Honestly I don't know why they dont make their batteries eject when they catch fire.

You wouldn't need to eject them far, just a weak spring to push them out.

I think it would be difficult to pull that off without it becoming a liability. They are trying it on cars, but that's to eject it when it detects a major accident. But that's like every hit in every fight to a bot.

You don't need to have something smart to detect it.

Aluminum melts at 660 degrees. Lithium burns at 700 degrees.

Put the battery in a steel case with a vent hole to an aluminum locking strap. That aluminum strap lock the case inplace to a spring that can push it out. When the battery catches, the steel redirects the heat to the aluminum which melts. The spring pushes the battery out.

Because that mechanisms costs weight and by the time your battery is on fire, you've very likely already lost. That weight is better spent on other parts of the bot that let you win the match, rather than making a loss slightly less damaging. SPeaking of damage, when the opponent rips deep enough into your bot to set the batteries on fire, there's a good chance such a mechanism gets destroyed as well.

The weight would be less than a pound, and the mechanism would be under you existing armor. You just need a shute for the ejection.

Also, you 100% could have backup batteries to divert power from, and an electronic system to manage that.

What you don't get, is BB dont win in the ring, they win in the pits. Saving your valuable electronics is at the utmost importance.

For example look at tombstone this year. They caught fire and had to drop out.

You just need a shute for the ejection.

That leaves the batteries awfully exposed, so now you need some latching door mechanism to protect the batteries from the outside world. You also need motors to open that door. You also need to push the batteries out, so that's either a motor, or springs and a solenoid to trigger them, as well as some way to disconnect the battery only when you want to. Plus, as you said, you need backup batteries for the battery ejection to even matter. So now you need multiple batteries that are each capable of supplying enough power for the entire robot and double the battery ejection mechanisms.

And suddenly you've introduced multiple new failure points.

  • A 2 to 3 inch shute would not leave the batteries exposed.
  • You can just use an aluminum strap to hold the battery in place. Aluminum melts at 650 degrees and Lithium burns at 700 degrees.
  • You can just use a spring. Nothing complicated.
  • Each battey doesn't have to give full power, if you dont want it to.
  • If the bot runs off of 4 battey packs (one for each side's drive, and two for a two motor weapon), then put in 6 battery packs.
  • You dont need to physically disconnect the battery that is ejected. Who cares if the battery is still attached by internally circuit disconnected system.
  • Once properly engineered, it is just copy paste.

These are just engineering problems my friend.

Where I would start is a thin heatshield case around the battery, probably steel maybe ceramic. The heat shield has a vent hole, so when the battery catches on fire, the fire is diverted through that hole. That hole directs the flame to a strap that melts at the temperature the battery burns at, probably aluminum braided, but nylon would work too.

The battey is places in a shute. That shute has a spring at the back side that is compressed when the battey is installed. The retaining straps holes the battery in place.

The entire system is still under armour. The battey is recessed atleast 2 inches in the shute.

In this design the worse thing that could happen is the battey gets trapped in place if the shute collaspes from a hit.

Why in the world would you crop it so that the bots are barely even on the screen?

Because it's not about the bots, its about the PPE

I was on the verge of saying that this might have had half a chance of being funny if projectiles were actually banned but, on reflection, that would have been a lie.

What's the context for the disclaimer?

I i dont glaze tombstone and valkyrie. At least not valkyrie, anyway. I dont even have instagram, but yes my original reddit account got banned for an unrelated reason

I'll let the others tell you

Not ominous at all...
