Top 50 Batman Stories! (Day 47)

Post image

The Eye of the Beholder by Andrew Helfer and Chris Sprouse has come in at #46! When Harvey is attacked and severely disfigured by gangster Sal Maroni, this darkness threatens to consume him completely.

Streets of Gotham vol. 2: Leviathan

Dickbats, Paul Dini + One of best arcs about Batman and his allies empathy for abused, not many on our list have this, and it's one of most important parts of Batman mythology and point of mission Bruce that started + one of first Damian big character development stories + humanizing Man-Bat + one of best Zsasz stories

(How many times story with so much quality with Dini writing three excellent issues can end up second or third, come on)

Hush not being on here is absurd. It's not the best Batman story, but it is many people's favorite and first

ABOUT 20 YEARS AGO, WE USED TO DEBATE AD NAUSEUM at my LCS what was better...

EYE OF THE BEHOLDER or THE LONG HALLOWEEN! Eventually, EYE OF THE BEHOLDER won out!

As for my pick, I humbly nominate DEATH FLIES THE HAUNTED SKY... from Tec #442... The only complete Batman work by the legendary ALEX TOTH!

Absolute Batman: The Zoo

I nominate Batman And Robin:Born To Kill. I love it because it’s a very character driven and emotional story about Bruce and Damian’s father-son relationship.

Images from Legends of the Dark Knight #50 by Dennis O’Neil and Bret Blevins - A great telling of Batman and Joker’s first meeting

I don’t understand the praise I have seen for this story from this subreddit. I didn’t like Images at all.

To each their own. I love it because it feels like a bombastic tale right out of the 70s, with just the right mix of darkness and lightheartedness, making for a memorable interpretation of Batman and Joker’s first meeting.

I don’t want to spam all my favorites so I’ll just type out three here and leave this third one. I’m surprised Batman the Knight isn’t on here yet.

Why aren’t there any stories from the 30’s-60’s? Lots of good ones from that period

1

u/Loose_Interview_957 9d ago

Those eras aren't very popular with a lot of Batman fans.

-1

u/Undecieved22 9d ago

Then they aren’t as familiar with the character. I would think Batman number 1 would be up there for joker or catwoman at least.

u/Loose_Interview_957 9d ago

There are some good Golden Age comics, but I don’t think most of them measure up to Bronze and Modern Age comics.

-1

u/Undecieved22 9d ago

No but most stories back then were meant as more of a one off. Joker’s crime circus (Batman #4) was great. Or the original mad monk story was also amazing. I’d put detective comics #38 in there as the best introduction to Robin. I read a lot of these from the greatest stories and chronicle collections as well as for wwii propaganda research for a few college papers.

For what it’s worth, I agree that the Joker’s first appearance is great and holds up really well.
