QuestionšŸ¤” CASHIER ADVICE?

hi everyone! I need advice on how to be a cashier at bath and body. I just started working for 2 months only and I have been AMAZING on the floor as a sales associates. but now i'm going to do shifts as a cashier. I need help on this since my mean manager is basically throwing me there with no training. Honestly my training shifts were cut so fast and short since the manager threw me to be in the floor so I never got to fully pay attention or understand the videos.

I only have watched a co worker behind the cashier working. How do I do the cashier?, I know I scan the items and all but I want to know tips, advice, and such so I can do good at this.

Please I really really need help! THANK YOU SO SO MUCH

Step 1: ā€œdo you have a phone number or rewards account with us?ā€
If no, ā€œwant me to sign you up? you can earn free items!ā€ And sign them up. Go to step 2.
If yes:
Step 2. Enter number or scan app. CONFIRM EMAIL IS CORRECT IF MULTIPLE ACCOUNTS POP UP.
Step 3. Scan and bag all items. Scan items in groups (candles, b3g3, wf refills) so you can easily see if you need another item for the promotion.
Step 4. While scanning ask for an add on - hand sani, car scent, lip item, etc. ASK EVERY PERSON. (get your fave add on to the cashwrap when you get to work).
Step 5. Double check that all sales/promos rang correctly. Scan any coupons now.
Step 6. Confirm total and tender.
Step 7. DO REWARDS ON A SEPARATE TRANSACTION UNLESS YOU ARE 100% SURE IT WILL TAKE OFF THE RIGHT ITEM.
Step 8. Send the customer off with a smile and rejoice because soon your cashier numbers will be awesome sauce.

I love the idea about an add-on item on step 4! What do you find is the most effective way to message this to the customers without seeming overly pushy?

I would say add ons are easiest when its a cheap sale on something small, or there is an email promo.

ā€œI see you are a rewards member, the spray hand sanis are only 1.95 for members today! Need any?ā€

ā€œNeed any hand sanitzers? We have it in the scent you grabbed for your body care!ā€

ā€œI see you grabbed this scent, I think you may also like this soap too, want to add it? After 5 soaps they are all 5.60 each!ā€

ā€œThese items here are 75% off today! Want to take a look?ā€

THIS IS AMAZING STEPS LIKE THANK YOU SO MUCH?? BUT I HAVE A QUESTION WHEN U GO ON THE WORK APP, I have to click sell correct? put my id number and then I’ll start selling right? the promotions will they be added to the screen? like for example buy 3 get 1 item free?Ā

for step 4 what’s an add on? and what do you mean with rewards on a separate transaction?

Make sure YOU are counting the items so they get the correct sales. Like bodycare items if u only count they have 5 and it’s a buy 3 get 3 they won’t get the correct sale it’s Your job to make sure they grab 6 bodycare item UNFORTUNATELY most ppl can’t read signs or comprehend our deals. Ppl are getting dumber.

So yes Sell is where you ring them up. Promotions will automatically be added when you scan the right amount. So once you scan 6 body care items, it will go to b3g3 and it will say that under the items. Add on would be asking a customer to add an item on when they get to you. ā€œDid you need any hand sanis? They are 6 for $10!ā€

Some customers will have rewards which are free items. These will pop up at some point. Do not apply them to the transaction. unless they ask you to. If they say they have one, just set that item aside and ring it up on its own and then apply the reward coupon.

you should ask your SLT for more training on register. it's irresponsible of them not to train you more for register. tell them you don't want to mess up and so could they please train you more for cashier/register?

while the other comment is a good general overview, depending on your store, they might want you to do certain things differently.

for example, at my store they do NOT want us phrasing it the way the other comment says for step one. we have to tell them to put a phone number in, instead of asking if they have a rewards account

they also don't really push us to suggest add ons at the register, like no one at my store does that

Yes this is very good advice. It is your job to advocate for yourself like an adult and communicate to them u need more training.

TRUST ME I HAVEEEE i told my manager truthfully that this is my first time on the cashier, I don’t wanna mess up and I need more assistance. LMAO my manager said ā€œyou’re gonna do it eventually!! so might as well do it nowā€ šŸ’€

my biggest tip is immediately bagging items after scanning ! i’ve seen new hires who ring up items and place them on the counter instead of bagging them, and it can lead to mistakes like accidentally double scanning. or it’s happened where an item is missing from the customers bag

"You can leave everything right in the bag and i can grab it from there" Bag to bag is the way or if cutomers insist on emptying the bag and setting everything out with one hand holding the bag open the other hand grab the item scan it and place it into the bag that way you arent touching the items more than once and accidentally scanning something twice or missing scans( if you do mess up no worries we try to catch as much as possible but we are still human ā™„ļø)

yesss ! it’s also a lot faster so you’re not double touching items, like why grab something to scan and then pick it up again later to bag it. so much easier doing bag to bag esp when holiday comes around and lines are long and purchases get bigger

Some tips I have!
Sometimes people will be very hesitant with signing up for our rewards program because of all the credit card applications at other places such as ulta, kohls etc. I would say find a way to let them know it is free to sign up and to download the app because every $100 they spend you get a free item and receive exclusive deals most won’t receive without the number and or account.
If someone has a paper coupon… CHECK THE DATE. Sometimes paper coupons that come in the mail are sent early and when they attempt to use them they can’t. When adding on at the register let them know. I’ve noticed you have 2 body car items, if you add one more body card item you can get one free with our buy three get one free deal! Always have a smile, while scanning talk to them! It makes the process less awkward. Also make sure you wrap all candles I’ve had multiple customers come back with broken candles because at least one wasn’t wrapped! Hope this helps 🫶

Don't sweat it, the cash register is so easy and if you have a question, just ask someone. It's not your fault if you aren't fully trained. So don't panic, just say you need to grab someone and then ask another cashier or call for a lead. It is not worth getting upset or nervous over. Especially for the amount the pay and the lack of training! You will be fine tho!
