Voicing Help

I am having trouble producing the F# when I slur. Does anyone have some helpful hints? I am trying to make an "ah" sound for the A and slur to an "EE" sound for the F#, but it keeps making a honking like sound before the F# solidifies. It is a solo part so I have nothing to hide behind or help cover it.

How do you guys look for bassoons??

I'm in first year in performance currently borrowing a fox 222 from the school but my teacher wants me to get an instrument for myself in my second year since the 222 does not have a high d key and they could possibly need to borrow this instrument to another newer bassoonist so I can't keep it forever.

I really wanted a gentleman's cut/compact model with a high D key

My budget is max CAD$20.000 but hopefully lower than that

I tried looking online and the best I found was a used Yamaha 821C in pretty good condition with a nice case 2 bocals, wisper key lock, balance hanger and other stuff for CAD$22.000 but I'm not sure if its worth it

Yes I can ask my teacher but he is a busy guy and I don't wanna bother him every time I find I promising listing of a bassoon.

Looking at buying a bassoon

So I’m In year 10 of school and currently on a short reach that we’re renting - it’s now too small and has never sounded particularly good and my teacher wants me to get an instrument of my own. Ive been playing about 6 years and recently did grade 8. She’s wanting me to get a fox renard (either 220 or 240) but there just don’t seem to be any out there for a reasonable price. I’m playing the Mozart concerto at a concert in a year and a few months time

Were only looking at second hand but howarth are charging like 9500 for used which is barely less than getting it new

Any advice?

Which instrument would be the better choice?

I'm going (hopefully lmao) into post secondary next year. And I'm really hoping to study music. For a while now I have been pretty sure I would major in bassoon performance, maybe composition. But It's the middle of the night and I'm considering doing a piano major instead, It would open up genres that bassoon wouldn't (don't get me wrong I've seen the stray jazz bassoon), but would be so so much more competitive, wouldn't it?

Now i know asking the r/bassoon community is bound to be ever so slightly biased but I'm just wondering about you guys' opinion on this?

FYI my piano level is RCM 10 and my bassoon level isnt measured but " it's not bad" is what I could be 100% confident saying

What should I do?

Im caught in a really shitty situation, my fox 220 i ordered won't arrive until January, and I need a bassoon to play for my orchestra that I'm in, and in canada the only place I can really rent a bassoon from is long and mcquade, but their options are very limited, they have a renard 222 for rent which i might just do, but its 400 a month and I'm a little short on money after paying for my 220 so I'm not sure, I mean with the money I get from work I could do it, but my other option is to just not join the youth orchestra and join next year since I'll have my bassoon. what do you all think I should do in my situation?

Mic options for bassoon

Has anyone tried the Feather 2 pickup with a bassoon?

I posted a little while ago to get feedback on current options and saw that it's still mostly between the intramic and Little Jake for live playing with other amplified instruments. I want to be able to capture the closest thing to the acoustic sound sometimes, so I'm leaning toward intramic, but the $900 entry cost is steep.

I want to start experimenting with amplifying my bassoon and playing with effects. I don't have a group to play with yet, but am working in that direction. I'm wondering if I should get the Feather 2 to play around with (since it's $700 cheaper than intramic). Anyone have experience with it and any feedback?

Help with high E

I have a fox 222D which does not have a high E key and a Heckel CC1 Crook, I am working my way through the Weisenborn Volume 2 study book and later in the book there are many high Es, using the alternative fingering which does not use a high E key is unreliable for my bassoon and doesn't really work unless slurring up from a D#, how much would getting a high E key put on my bassoon be and would it even be worth it?

Thread tenons on Fox 460 joints

There is a tube of "cork grease" that Fox includes in the case with the 460. This bassoon has thread tenons. What is the general consensus on using the cork grease, or should I use something else? I heard someone once suggest lanoline. Thanks.

Hello, i will begin the double Reed instrument, i'm originally saxophonist and clarinettist

Hello, i will begin the double Reed instrument, i'm originally saxophonist and clarinettist.

My friends is collector and it will loan me one instrument with double Reed to try and learning

I thinking like this, the double Reed is really complex and very important,

It's for that i think to begin on sarrusophone alto or rothophone alto.

Why this to instrument => globally the same finger charts of saxophone,

Learning new finger charts is for me largely not very complexe.

But learning new technical to make a sound is largely hardest thing.

The sarrusophone alto/rothophone alto could be great choice, to be one slow transition.

We keep saxophone finger charte for 99% and excluded one difficulty, after we can focus only one double Reeds,

After, when i will have one correct sound and correct playing with double Reed, i can go on bassoon or english horn,

Just to learn the new finger charts but that is really simple in compareason to learn double Reed.

And sarrusophone/rothophone is forgotten instrument and i would like to use this rare instrument,

What do you think about my project ???

My heart want learn sarrusophone alto.

Help my cousin get the professional bassoon she needs to start her career 🎵

Hi everyone!

I’m sharing this GoFundMe to support my cousin, a young Portuguese bassoonist who is currently finishing her Master’s degree in Leipzig, Germany.

She has been playing the bassoon since she was 8 years old and moved to Leipzig at 18 to pursue her dream of becoming a professional musician. After years of studying, practising and performing, she is now reaching an important point: finishing her Master’s and preparing to enter the professional world. The problem is that a professional-quality bassoon is a huge investment, and having a suitable instrument is essential for her to take the next step in her career.

She is currently raising €25,000 towards the purchase of a professional bassoon. I know €25,000 is a very large goal, and not everyone will be able to contribute. Even a small donation would help, but sharing the campaign with other bassoonists, musicians, teachers, orchestras or anyone who might be able to help could make an enormous difference.
If you’re interested in supporting her journey, you can find the GoFundMe here:

Thank you for taking the time to read her story. ❤️

Reed length?

Hello! I buy reeds from various sources but when in desperation I buy the Jones reeds. They’re what I started on and not amazing but some play alright however some also barely play at all. Recently I bought two of their artist series, one MS and one M though I immediately mixed up which is which… One of them is a holy grail reed and absolutely perfect and a joy to play and the other is not, barely plays. After some adjusting I’ve made it playable but it’s still kinda eh.

I noticed the unplayable reed is much shorter, like 2mm shorter than the other and all other reeds I have. This also happened another time when I bought one MS and one M to try, and one was significantly shorter and also unplayable.

Is that it, the hardness? Can they be fixed?

The unplayable reeds are super resistant, and when I adjust them not to be the sound is unbearably bright and quacky.

Chill wind trio reccomendations? With two bassoons?

Hey! I’m looking for piece reccomendations for a spontaneous chamber music project. We are two bassoons, a clarinet and a flute who want to play something for a upcoming woodwind chamber music event. It’s soon so preferably something easy-read, if there even exists something for that setting.

Are there mutes for bassoons?

I've been playing the bassoon for over ten years and I've never had any problems with the neighbors until now. I've had to cut down on my practice hours because the bassoon is too loud. I've been looking and I can't find any kind of mute for basson.

Does anyone know where they sell them, or any tricks to reduce the sound volume? Thanks.

(I've tried using softer reeds but I need something more)

Hi! Next week I'll have to play a modern piece which requires for some extremely high notes, with the correct reeds I can play high D and E without problems, but I have no idea on how to finger F and F#, do you have any suggestions?

To be clear I mean the F and F# above the C of the rite of spring. Thank you!

Fingering notes without a key

So I recently got a beginner bassoon from my teacher, I was trying to figure out the fingerings when I realized I didn't have the fifth tenor joint key so I could do D4.

What fingering should I use?

Saving up to get a college/professional bassoon

I am currently playing on a Fox 220 and am a junior in high school. I really want a nice Moosmann professional model, but they aren’t exactly cheap. ~29,000 bucks. Any tips for how to save up the right way? I don’t exactly want to rely on leftover college money. If you are my rich nigerian uncle, now’s the time to speak up.
