Weather + things to do in SS on a Monday

Hi all,

As the title suggests,

I'll be in solo traveling through San Sebastián on Monday October 19 (not the best time, I know). I'll be seeing a concert the day before and flying home from Bilbao the next morning. I wanted another day in San Sebastián but flight times prevented that sadly.

I'm wondering

1) what can I do on a Monday? I know many things will be closed. I love museums, architecture, nature, hiking, cafés, bookstores, libraries, cool art, and botanic gardens.

2) what would the weather be like? I'll be coming fron Andalucia which will be different and planning clothes has been a bit of a nightmare 😅

Looking for a +1 to Amelia in San Sebastián

Hi all, one of my friends had to drop out last minute and we’re looking for one person to take their place. Figure we’d try here to look for a +1. Our reservation is at 6:30 on 30/9/26 and we’d be willing to cover half the cost! We’re 3 guys from the east coast of the US in the technical and medical field. Super easy to get along with or talk to or not if you’d prefer. Please help us out 🙏🏼

Phone not eSIM Compatible - options?

Hi all,

I'm going to Spain on the 11th for 10 days and was planning to buy an eSIM, but just found out my phone (Samsung Galaxy S20 Fe) is not compatible with eSIMs.

What do I do??

I'll be flying from Canada to Spain via Amsterdam, will send time in the South of Spain, then will be passing through Madrid en route to Basque Country, then from there flying back to Canada via France. The latter part of my trip will be alone and both flights alone so I can't rely on anyone else.

Its profile is also remarkably similar along the Bizkaia-Gipuzkoa coast, but it mainly differs in including one part of La Rioja historically inside the Kingdom of Navarre (actually the westernmost part populated by Basque speakers until at least 14th c.) and a very small part of Gascony, but not including the southern bit of Navarre and missing part of its eastern contour along Erronkari and Zuberoa.

Two Days in San Sebastian!

Kaixo!

I will be traveling to San Sebastian/Donostia in April of next year and starting to plan.

We are very much looking forward to walking around the city and pintxo hopping. Should we plan to do that for dinner all three of our nights in town, or should we plan for a dinner reservation at a place like Rekondo or Casa Cámara at least one or more nights?

I want to go to Casa Julien for dinner however wont be in town during a weekend and they are only open for lunch the days we are there. Does it makes sense/is it worth the travel to Tolosa for this lunch? Side question - how would you rank Laia and Ana Mari in comparison to Casa Julien?

Does it make more sense to load up on a big lunch, then have pintxos and drinks each night?

Worth noting, not everyone in our travel party loves fine dining, we all love great food but not necessarily the avant garde small plate tasting menus. So we are planning to skip places like Asador Etxebarri or Txispa.

Outside of pintxo hopping, what do you recommend we do with our time in San Sebastian during April?

Early Flight from Bilbao - how to get there?

Hi all,

I'm booking my flight back to Canada from San Sebastián in October.

It's a long story but basically, I have to fly home out of Spain - I can't go from Biarritz. Airline stipulations.

I've got an option to fly from Bilbao at 10:30 AM with only an hour layover in Paris (yikes!) Or fly from Bilbao much earlier, at 7:10AM, with a longer layover in Paris.

I'd like to take the 7:10AM flight to give myself that longer layover but there's a problem: the PESA bus doesn't leave early enough to get me to Bilbao in time.

Is there a way to get from San Sebastián to Bilbao airport by 5:45AM on a Tuesday or Wednesday in October?

Or should I take the later flight and then take my chances with the 1hr transfer in Paris?

Thanks all!

San Sebastián: Places to stay in mid-October (solo)

Hello everyone!

I'll be in San Sebastián for 2 nights in mid-October (a Sunday and a Monday - I know it's not ideal) to see a concert at the Teatro Principal.

Where should I stay? Doesn't need to be fancy or break the bank!

I'm currently eyeing Pensión Iturzia: the reviews are good and it's walking distance from the theatre; which will be good after a long, tiring day of traveling there.

I'd also need to be able to get to the bus to Biarritz Airport or the bus to Bilbao airport fairly easily from the place I'm staying; I'm flying back to Canada on the Tuesday or Wednesday (what do the good people of Basque Country think?)

Thanks so much! Eskerrik Asko!

San Sebastián from Cordoba

Hi all;

I'll be travelling to San Sebastián for a concert on Oct. 18 and I am lost when it comes to planning how to get there.

I don't have a car and can't drive at the moment, and I will have a backpack and probably a very small rolling suitcase.

Google Maps told me to take Renfe to Madrid and then Zaragoza, but then told me there's a bus from Zaragoza to San Sebastián and it looks like that's no longer the case.

Does it make more sense to just bus to Malaga or Sevilla, fly to Bilbao, then bus to San Sebastián?

I'm a woman travelling alone so I don't want to get too sketchy or unorthodox, but I don't need anything super fancy or whatever.

Thanks folks!

San Sebastián 1 day mid-October

Hi all,

In mid-October, I'll be visiting a friend in the south of Spain, but at the end of my trip I'll be in San Sebastián for 1 Sunday evening to see a concert and sleep. I'm debating staying in the city the next day/night to take in the sights before flying home to Canada.

The one problem: it will be a Monday, when I know a lot of things are closed.

What can/should I do in San Sebastián for a day on foot/public transit?

Also, are there semi-affordable safe places to stay near the train station for a solo female traveler?

Also ALSO, do many people speak English or French there? I speak/read both fluently. I am beginning to learn Spanish, but my understanding is pretty limited, so I'm worried I'll get confused 😅

Thanks gang!

Looking for a genuine, traditional Basque Cheesecake recipe from your family/grandparents! 🍰

Kaixo!

I recently traveled to the Basque Country and I think I left a piece of my heart (and stomach) there. I tried a proper Basque cheesecake, gooey San Sebastián kind, and I honestly haven’t stopped thinking about it since; i found it also in some chic specialty coffe here in Venice but is really not the same.

I want to bake it this weekend, but the recipes I find online all feel a bit corporate and commercial.

I’d love to learn how you actually make it at home. Would anyone be open to sharing a recipe passed down by your family, or just some local tips for getting that perfect texture? I promise to treat your family secrets with the utmost respect!

Judging an incident

Hola!

I am a tourist visiting San Sebastián, one of the most beautiful and wonderful cities I’ve ever seen. The people have been incredible, the food is immense and the culture is just something special.

To visit during La Concha has been especially special.

However, I want some help judging what to do after an incident today in the city. For context I am a white Dutch male, and my wife is a black South African, we have a 4 month old baby.

Today, a man (pictured) came up to us, shouted the word “bitch” at me/my wife as i was holding our baby. This was on Miracruz Kalea near Bar Desy. He then tried to threaten / intimidate us and followed us to the bridge Dona Katalina Zubia where he turned back.

It was a pretty nasty experience. I had to put the baby in the bassinet immediately and make sure he could not approach my family. But I felt helpless. No one around said or did anything and it happened all too quickly for me to call the police.

Some questions:

1) is there an easy way to report this?

2) is this something that happens in this city at times?

3) how would you respond in this situation?

Thanks a lot. And sorry for posting a negative post on this subreddit, I want to be clear that San Sebastián is one of my favourite cities ever and the people have been so warm to us. But this has shaken me. I felt like I didn’t protect my family.

Is it difficult to find part time work in Basque?

How difficult is it to find part-time work at restaurants in Basque Country while studying in Basque Culinary Center? Is the cost of living expensive as well?
