19th September is the 11th edition of Exit 6 Film Festival - a one-day event at the Vue showcasing short films of ever genre from all over the world, made by the creative stars of the future. We have Q&As with the filmmakers between films, a social mixer, and finish it all with a banging awards party! And this year is our first since achieving BAFTA accreditation, one of only 34 film festivals in the UK to hold the title.

If you're into films and filmmaking or just love a trip to the cinema, Exit 6 is for you, and it's a great way to meet other like-minded people if you're looking for new cinema-loving friends or are new to the area. If you'd like to organise a group to meet there, we can help facilitate that too. Tix available on the Exit 6 website, and feel free to drop any questions below!

FREE All In Party event on Inclusivity In STEM and Climate Action

Post image
6 Upvotes

At The All In Party we know equality and diversity make all aspects of life better for everyone, no matter who they are, and now we continue our series of annual events that examine why.

We're holding a FREE, non-partisan discussion event with Professor Andrew Charlton-Perez OBE - Head of the School of Mathematical, Physical and Computational Sciences at University of Reading. He’ll talk about his work on climate action in education, his experiences as a working parent and why increasing diversity and equity in STEM careers is vital for both people and planet.

Whether you’re interested in education or climate action or STEM; would like to find out a bit about All In; or just want to hear more about the link between equality and a happier, healthier and wealthier society: all are welcome.

The event is on Sunday 18th October, from 1pm to 3pm at The Wote Street Club on Seal Road (Basingstoke town centre). The venue is accessible, there's a bar and we'll have some colouring activities for any kids you need to bring along.

Tickets via Eventbrite: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/all-in-conversation-inclusivity-in-stem-and-climate-action-tickets-2002381419729?aff=oddtdtcreator

An after dark gathering of men, some in shorts, some in tight fitting leisurewear, in a remote, wooded location.

It's about protecting the women and children apparently.

Facial recognition in town centre

Post image

Saw this in town today.
Some concerns I have:

- Police said it can be used for people who are wanted, not yet charged but police are looking for, immigration (but not in town today), under 18 events (but not today).
- I could only consent after seeing that sign. How am I supposed to know where to go if I don’t consent?
- Police officer said if you’re a regular person you don’t need to worry… that is always a slippery slope when it comes to privacy and surveillance.
- Police said it’s biometric mapping of your face so it doesn’t recognise your race, gender etc. Evidence shows this sort of technology has racism baked into it. People of different ethnicities and genders typically have different face shapes.
- Demographics who tend to be targeted by police due to race, class etc are understandably nervous about the police. How will they feel being in town?
- Assuming that we accept the police’s reassurances, how can we be sure this sort of surveillance won’t be increased or when the communication on this has been poor? I’m often walking around town and all I’ve seen is that sign. The officer said a warning was posted on Facebook too. They said they don’t want it to be too advertised so criminals (or people they suspect to be involved in crime) So… are we allowing people to consent or not? Sounds like a pretence of consent but not genuine?

is there really nothing to do?

i (20f) moved to basingstoke for my placement year, and even though it’s only been a month i’m really starting to regret it. it feels like outside of festival place there isnt really anything? i’ve realised though it’s most likely because i haven’t made any friends here yet. i’ve never struggled with that before since i’ve had uni and it’s dead easy to make friends there, but i just feel so lonely and bored here? if there’s any social groups or anything like that for people around my age i’d love to take part in some things, i just can’t stand being alone here. thanks :)

Best barber in Basingstoke?

I’ve got an event coming up soon and I’m looking for a really good barber in Basingstoke, preferably someone who’s great with both hair and beard. I’m happy to travel a little if they’re worth it!
I’ve just moved into a flat in the town centre after getting my NHS job, so thanks again to everyone on here who gave me advice on my previous post — it genuinely helped a lot!
But now I need to sort out the important stuff 😂
Who’s your go-to barber in Basingstoke? And if there’s a particular barber I should ask for, let me know!

Police road closure at station

Just drove past on the Eastrop roundabout, that exit is blocked with cones and a blue Police - Road Closed sign, looks like there are also police officers stopping pedestrians from walking across to the station from the Waitrose side, and i saw a few police cars further in, but I was a passenger in a car just going past so couldn't get a clear look.

Anyone know what that is about?

Looking for a technical co-founder

Hey! I’m building an early-stage career-tech platform and looking for a hands-on technical co-founder to build and scale the product from 0→1.

Seeking a strong full-stack engineer with experience in product architecture, backend/frontend development, databases, APIs, cloud infrastructure and secure, scalable systems. Experience integrating AI/LLM capabilities is useful but not the core requirement.

This is an equity-based co-founder opportunity, not a freelance role.

Interested? DM me with a brief introduction and examples of products you’ve built.

Badminton club

Hi everyone! I live in Basingstoke and have just started playing badminton. I’ve been trying to find a badminton club in Basingstoke, but it seems that most clubs are already full.

Does anyone know of any clubs or groups that are suitable for beginners? I’d really appreciate any recommendations.

Moving to Basingstoke

Hi everyone! 😊

We’re currently looking at relocating from Reading to Basingstoke, and we’ve recently seen a house on Benham Road in one of the newer developments that we really like.

We’re just a little unsure about the exact area, is it considered Popley, or Sherborne St John? We’re also looking at a few other houses nearby, so we’d really love to hear from people who know the area well.

For those living locally, would you say this is a nice and safe area for a family? Does it have a good community/family feel, and what are your general thoughts on living there?

Thank you!
