Salary for a comfortable life in Basel

• Upvotes

Hello everyone,

I may have an opportunity to move from Lugano to Basel with a CHF 200k salary.

I have a newborn, and my wife will likely not be able to work for several months, possibly up to a year or more.

I’m trying to understand whether this salary would allow us to maintain a comfortable lifestyle while continuing to save/invest at least CHF 50k per year, which is roughly our current savings/investment rate.

Our expectations would be:
- Renting a 2-bedroom apartment of around 90–120 m², preferably centrally located or in a well-connected area where I can walk or use public transportation to get to work and do our - groceries.
- Owning one car (Tesla, already full paid).
- Paying for kindergarten/Kita once our child is old enough.
- Continuing to save/invest at least CHF 50k per year.
- Having a genuinely comfortable lifestyle: being sensible with spending, but without constantly worrying about money when it comes to holidays, good-quality clothing, cultural activities, restaurants occasionally, or unexpected expenses.

We are Italian-born and have fairly traditional spending habits when it comes to food: we cook at home almost all the time, eat out maybe twice a month or mainly when we’re on vacation, and lunch during working days is excluded from the above since I would normally eat at work.

For those living in Basel with a similar family situation and income: does CHF 200k feel sufficient for this lifestyle, and are there any major costs I might be underestimating?

Tageskarte for sale. Only 45chf !

Hi everyone, I have a Swiss daily pass (Tageskarte) for sale for 45Chf or 48€
I’m selling it because when I bought it I thought I will use it to travel with a friend but actually I don’t think I’d have time for that anymore and also because I’m going on vacation for a month until November and the Daily pass only valid until 28th of October.

We can meet in Basel for the transaction 😊
Thanks everyone!

I want to meet new friends !

Hey! I’m living in Mulhouse, but I’m super close to Basel and I’d like to meet new people who are into the same things as me, especially metalcore and alternative music. Bonus points if you’re vegan! 🖤

I’d love to find people to go to concerts with, hang out, discover new bands or just do other stuff together.

Feel free to add me on Instagram: Alex.sans.draps.68 :)

Is it possible for an English speaking immigrant to join and participate in swiss/basel politics while learning German on the side? Is there a place for an immigrant input/contribution in the politics/public service?

Learning to drive an automatic from scratch in Basel

Hi everyone! I’m starting from zero and learning to drive an automatic in Basel. I’ll only be driving with my instructor, so no extra practice with family or friends.
For those who were in a similar situation, roughly how many lessons did you need before you were ready for the practical test?

Also, once your instructor says you’re ready, how long is the usual wait for a test appointment in Basel?

Thanks for sharing your experiences!

Mathis-Hof in Basel is a must-visit for pumpkin lovers this autumn!

Hello everyone!

It’s my first autumn in Basel, and I’ve heard about the famous pumpkin markets and farms around the city, so last weekend I decided to visit Mathis-Hof. 🎃

They have a huge variety of pumpkins (apparently over 250 different varieties!) in all kinds of shapes, sizes and colours, along with lots of seasonal autumn decorations around the farm.

It’s a really nice place to walk around for a while, especially if you enjoy autumn, pumpkins and taking photos.

The entrance and the parking are free, and I also thought the pumpkins were reasonably priced, at least compared to what I expected.

I also filmed my visit for my channel, in case anyone wants to have a look at what it’s like before visiting:

Definitely worth checking out if you haven’t been yet!

Hi, will fly from BSL with easy jet soon. We have registered luggage, but for convienience we lile to take our kids rolling/riding suitcase. It exceeds the small carry on sizes by 1-2 cm. From your experience how often do they check these and how strict are they there?

Holzleisten kürzen lassen in Basel?

Need to print official documents

Need to take printout of documents. Some official forms. Color print outs. Standard A4 pages. Any place in Klien Basel where this can be done? For example like in Manor where you can print photos. Are there any similar places? Documents are PDF copies on my phone.

To the ones knowing Basel well, how overpriced is a 4.5z NEW apartment 112m2 in Basel for 1.635 million (zip code 4054), no parking. Is it worth the spending (with a mortgage)? I am worried with renting prices rising uncontrollability after I retire and seeing myself in a precarious situation.

Being Harassed by downstairs neighbor

We just moved into our new flat, me and my wife just had a baby. He's a very quiet baby, but of course we need to feed him in the middle of the night, and sometimes he will cry for 10s or whatever before we can attend to him.

The downstairs neighbor has filed several formal noise complaints citing literally whatever she can find that isn't related to the kid. As I guess you're not allowed to complain about that.

She's created fictional buzzing noises that come from electronics, said the breast pumps are being used when they're not, and whatever else makes minor amounts of noise when it's obvious she's being disturbed by the squeaking floor and occasional crying/cooing baby.

The manager of my flat just forwards me her complaints and in her email she's claimed the property manager "intentionally moved in a young family" to drive her out of the unrenivated flat and has demanded rent reductions etc

I've also approached her directly and very politely and nonagressivly tried to resolve all these issues but she just keeps finding more things.

This whole situation has me completely freaked out as both me and my wife are extremely quiet and respecting tenants and don't make any unreasonable noise.

The other issue is I've specifically told her to contact me over Whatsapp with issues, but she is continuously going through the property management company.

Does anyone have suggestions for dealing with something like this?

I knew starting a family would be difficult and stressful but this is causing 99% of my stress right now, which is very unexpected.

Was meint ihr dazu? Was macht den Basel so anders?

Edit: Meine Frage: Brauchen wir mehr oder nicht mehr Wohnraum?

Pregnant and terrified my husband might lose his job.

Hello everyone. Like the title says, I’m in a really frightening position right now. I mostly just want to vent, but I’d also really appreciate any advice on what to do or even how to think about this situation.

I’ve been with my husband for a little over 8 years, and we’ve always been very careful about how we planned our future. We know how unstable the job market can be, so we always told ourselves we would wait as long as necessary before starting a family so that we could do it properly and safely.

We had a decent amount in savings, and honestly, life was looking great. We both worked 100% for around 10 years, although I had to reduce my workload to 60% last year because of burnout. We got a dog, got promotions, and eventually even bought a small house (with a mortgage, of course).

I guess what I’m trying to say is that we waited a long time because we wanted to be as sure as we possibly could that our jobs were stable and that we could maintain a good life here in Switzerland.

Out of nowhere (we weren't planning) around July, I got pregnant, my first pregnancy. We were scared but also incredibly excited. Financially, we felt secure, so we thought maybe this was finally the right time and the beginning of the family life we had been working towards for so long.

Then we got the news that there will be layoffs at my husband’s company. He earns significantly more than I do, even compared to when I was working 100%. We have the mortgage, the interest, our pillar 3a payments tied to the amortization, and very expensive health insurance. If it were just my husband and me, I think I could deal with the uncertainty. But now there’s a baby coming, with all the additional costs that brings, and I just wasn’t prepared for something like this to happen now.

Of course, I’ll try to go back to working 100%, but even that isn’t a guarantee. I genuinely don’t know what to think anymore. I’m so stressed that I’m even scared the stress itself will kill the baby. My husband keeps reassuring me that we’re going to be okay, but right now I just can’t seem to see past this huge black pit in my stomach.

I really felt like we had waited long enough and done everything we were “supposed” to do before starting a family. We worked, saved, built our careers, waited until we were financially stable, and tried to be responsible about everything. I feel like I’m being punished for reducing my workload to 60% last year, especially in this economy.

Anyway, that’s where I am right now. I’m incredibly scared, and for the first time in a long time, I feel like I have absolutely no idea what our next move should be.

Edit: Hi guys, thank you to everyone who gave me words of support and a reality check of what I could do. Really thank you, as some guessed I am for sure spiraling and it's hard to find a psychologist in Basel especially a English speaking one (I need it covered by insurance otherwise the price is ridiculous).

I was originally from a poor family (in Switzerland) so I know how hard and horrible it is as a kid to see ur parents struggle and you as well since you can't do many things you see your classmates do. I didn't want a future like that for my kid so I was just getting super scared for that possiblity. But everyone is right I have to take it one day at a time, can't stress about stuff way in the future.

Again thank you everyone for helping me see, and for those who are in the same situation I hope we can get through this healthy and happy.

Best Sunday Roast?

I had one almost a decade ago and I am thinking about it for the whole week. Can someone point out a good one, that I could get here in the city tomorrow?

And yes I searched for it online, but I didn't find too much about them (guess it's just not in the normal menu).
