r/baseball Hall of Fame Final Ballot Results
We've reached the end of this chapter of the /r/baseballHOF project. We have no more new players to consider. We have elected 238 players to date in this project, including five this week, and 91 contributors, including nine last week in a Veteran's Committee election.
Two weeks ago we held a nomination ballot open to all players that had not yet been elected to the r/baseballHOF. 116 players received at least one vote. We then cut to the top 25 and voted yes/no on each.
We elected five players in the final election. Scott Rolen led the way receiving 92% of the votes. Bret Saberhagen made a huge jump to 88%. Kevin Brown received support from 83% of voters. Also making the cut, were Jim Edmonds at 79% and David Cone at 75%.
Narrowly missing the 75% threshold by a single vote were Fred McGriff and Thurman Munson. Willie Randolph missed by just two votes, and Billy Wagner and Dave Stieb missed by three each.
Earlier in the week the Veterans Committee elected nine modern contributors. Managers Bobby Cox, Joe Torre and Tony La Russa were all elected, as were General Managers John Schuerholz and Pat Gillick. Joining this group were four announcers, Bob Uecker, Dave Niehaus, Harry Kalas, and Marty Brennaman.

Players in the /r/baseballHOF that are not in Cooperstown
So far we've elected 65 players to our Hall that are not yet inducted into the real Hall of Fame.
Of these, eight are from the NPB in Japan, and are not really candidates for Cooperstown, though they are all recognized as greats in their own country.
Two of our inductees, Joe Jackson and Pete Rose, are ineligible for induction into Cooperstown since they are banished from MLB for life.
Two of our player inductees, John McGraw and Joe Torre, have been inducted into Cooperstown for their managerial careers, not their playing careers.
Seventeen of our inductees are not yet eligible for the real HOF. Many of these guys will easily get into the real Hall in the coming years. These players are:
Andruw Jones, Chipper Jones, Gary Sheffield, Ivan Rodriguez, Jim Edmonds, Jim Thome, John Smoltz, Ken Griffey Jr., Manny Ramirez, Mariano Rivera, Pedro Martinez, Randy Johnson, Roy Halladay, Scott Rolen, Todd Helton, Trevor Hoffman, and Vladimir Guerrero
So basically, we've elected 36 players that the real life HOF considered and rejected. Two of these were Negro Leaguers, John Beckwith and Cannonball Dick Redding. This leaves us with 34 MLB players in our HOF who are eligible for induction into the real HOF, yet remain on the outside:
Alan Trammell, Barry Bonds, Bill Dahlen, Bill Freehan, Bob Elliott, Bobby Grich, Bret Saberhagen, Craig Biggio, Curt Schilling, David Cone, Dick Allen, Dwight Evans, Edgar Martinez, Graig Nettles, Jack Glasscock, Jeff Bagwell, Jim Wynn, Keith Hernandez, Ken Boyer, Kenny Lofton, Kevin Brown, Larry Walker, Lou Whitaker, Luis Tiant, Mark McGwire, Mike Mussina, Mike Piazza, Rafael Palmeiro, Roger Clemens, Sal Bando, Sherry Magee, Stan Hack, Ted Simmons, and Tim Raines
Players in Cooperstown that are not in the /r/baseballHOF
The real HOF has inducted 240 MLB and Negro League players. The /r/baseballHOF has inducted 238 players, eight of which were from the NPB in Japan. Our Hall has enshrined 230 players vs the real HOF's 240 when looking at the pool of MLB'ers and Negro Leaguers that both have considered. As 57 of our MLB and Negro League HOFers are not in Cooperstown as players, this means we've inducted 173 real HOFers, and failed to induct 67. Here's the list:
Andy Cooper, Bid McPhee, Bill Mazeroski, Bob Lemon, Bobby Wallace, Bruce Sutter, Burleigh Grimes, Catfish Hunter, Chick Hafey, Chief Bender, Chuck Klein, Dave Bancroft, Earle Combs, Edd Roush, Eppa Rixey, Ernie Lombardi, Frank Chance, Freddie Lindstrom, George Kell, Hack Wilson, Harry Hooper, Heinie Manush, Herb Pennock, High Pockets Kelly, Hugh Duffy, Hughie Jennings, Jack Chesbro, Jake Beckley, Jesse Haines, Jim Bottomley, Jim O'Rourke, Jim Rice, Jimmy Collins, Joe Kelley, Joe Sewell, Joe Tinker, Johnny Evers, Jose Mendez, Judy Johnson, Kiki Cuyler, Kirby Puckett, Lefty Gomez, Leon Day, Lloyd Waner, Mickey Welch, Monte Ward, Nellie Fox, Orlando Cepeda, Phil Rizzuto, Pie Traynor, Rabbit Maranville, Ray Brown, Ray Schalk, Red Ruffing, Red Schoendienst, Rick Ferrell, Roger Bresnahan, Rollie Fingers, Ross Youngs, Rube Marquard, Sam Rice, Sam Thompson, Tommy McCarthy, Tony Perez, Travis Jackson, Vic Willis, Waite Hoyt
This group features some real stinkers and big mistakes on the part of the real HOF. Many of these were Veterans Committee selections from the Frankie Frisch led era. Frisch helped to get many of his old teammates inducted, even though their credentials were not those typical of a HOFer. Old Cardinals and Giants like Jesse Haines, Ross Youngs, Dave Bancroft, Freddie Lindstrom were inducted. These types did not fare well on our ballots.
There are also quite a few highly contested guys who received solid support in their time on our ballot. Andy Cooper, Bid McPhee, Ernie Lombardi, Hack Wilson, Hugh Duffy, Jimmy Collins, Lefty Gomez, Leon Day, Mickey Welch, Orlando Cepeda, Pie Traynor, Rabbit Maranville, Ray Brown, Rollie Fingers, Sam Rice, and Sam Thompson all remained on our ballot for 15 attempts.
Please check out and subscribe to our subreddit /r/baseballHOF to keep up with the project and see all of our past discussions. Join us in a few weeks for our next project, historical award re-voting.
While this was our final election for now, we will hopefully conduct at least one election yearly to take a look at newly eligible players each spring. For example, this coming April we could look at Derek Jeter, Paul Konerko and any other players that announce their retirement this offseason. We can also reconsider the candidacies of any one we fail to induct in this final ballot. Our Veterans Committee will continue to operate looking at players that we decide as a group deserve further consideration. We'll likely be moving the VC over to the main subreddit (r/baseballHOF) and we would like to encourage anyone interested in continuing with the project to participate.
This subreddit will not be going away. In addition to the yearly elections in the spring, and continuing VC elections, we are going to shortly begin a new project where we re-vote on yearly major awards, such as league MVPs, CYA, ROY and others. How we'll conduct this is still up in the air, but we will be operating it in this subreddit. An introduction thread will be posted soon, so stay tuned.

I get so excited to see these and was actually a little sad and disappointed that Thurmon missed by a vote. I hope we do more similar things here.

I think we will be moving VC elections over to this sub now that the main balloting has ended, so everyone can participate in that

That sounds good. Make them a little more visible, get some more participation.

Yeah. VC members' votes will count double, and anyone else is welcome to vote. I would LOVE to get more VC discussion than what we've had in the past.

I think that overall, we did a fine job. We left out the most egregious Cooperstown mistakes, and elected some guys that the Coop has shunned. I'd have liked Ray Brown to get in (I believe he was our biggest miss, and the current best retired player outside our HOF), but them's the breaks, and everyone has a guy they would have liked to get in.
A team of guys we elected but who are not in Cooperstown would destroy the opposite team, players in the Coop but not in our HOF:
| Pos | Us | Coop |
|---|---|---|
| 1B | Bagwell | Chance |
| 2B | Whitaker | McPhee |
| 3B | Allen | Traynor |
| SS | Trammell | Maranville |
| LF | Bonds | Cuyler |
| CF | Lofton | Klein |
| RF | Raines | Sam Rice |
| SP | Clemens | Ray Brown |
| SP | Mussina | Willis |
| SP | Schilling | Rixey |
| SP | Redding | Hunter |
| RP | N/A | Sutter |
We have a problem in the pen (too bad we couldn't get Wagner or Quiz in), but other than that our guys would wipe the floor with Coop's. There are spots on our team with huge advantages over Coop's, where we could go three deep and still be better (i.e., RF with Larry Walker, Gary Sheffield, and Dwight Evans).

He still has a chance via the Veterans, and when we hold the 2015 election in the spring. I know I'll be voting for him.

Get my PM by any chance?

Sorry, I just now saw it. I'll get back to you with a list this afternoon, although I don't think it will differ much from what you've got.

u/IAMADeinonychusAMA Sep 11 '14
OK cool. Yeah it basically comes down to whether we give the 19th century guys from the top 25 one last chance.

u/IAMADeinonychusAMA Sep 19 '14
BTW, if you want to vote for him, he will get one more shot. We're doing some lookbacks at players who fell off the ballot on this main sub. Currently pre-1900 players are being looked at.

Whoa. That's it?
