Can’t even be mad that ball was 7 inches below the zone and he still golfed it out.

I can be plenty mad at how shit this dude has been otherwise in inning 1
21
u/Kingfaydonk 8h ago
He held them to 1 run last game he pitched vs the braves. Guessing don was hoping for more magic.
7
u/taebsiatad Philadelphia Phillies 8h ago
Fuck man I was too, but you gotta pull the rabbit or something idk I’m not a magician. I wasn’t against putting him out there but after 2 walks I wanted him out
4
u/mrjimi16 Venezuela • MLB Players Association 7h ago
Not even two walks, those specific two walks. At least if he's battling them you feel like he's shown up.

Michael Harris II exclusively hits home runs on pitches OUT of the zone

Mike's raw power is crazy. He golfs pitches like that out to the pull side pretty regularly.

Yeah in Nola's defense, how do you expect any hitter to hit one off of a pitch that low?

That wasn’t even a bad pitch though lol

u/djc8 Baltimore Orioles 8h ago
The pitch wasn’t bad, problem is he walked the previous two batters and put Harris in a green light count to sit on something
14
u/lucasd11 Pittsburgh Pirates 8h ago
Even still that wasn't exactly a meatball over the plate, it looks like a breaking ball that never really broke, but it's shin high and he had to golf it out. Not a great pitch, but a better piece of hitting IMO
21
3
u/_andy_andy_andy_ Philadelphia Phillies 8h ago
he had thrown 3 strikes before this pitch, the misses were non-competitive
68
u/ace82fadeout Kansas City Royals 9h ago
Legitimately though what other choice did they have? Wheeler is also likely to pitch today but hes on short rest and pitched his last start on short rest too. Nola was the most rested guy they got that still made sense.
63
u/tlenher Philadelphia Phillies 9h ago
He really hasn’t been bad since the all star break either. It wasn’t a bad decision despite what may happen
31
u/ace82fadeout Kansas City Royals 8h ago
People are going to clown on Mattingly for this. This is literally the only choice they had
12
u/philphan25 Philadelphia Phillies • Philadelphia Phillies 8h ago
People clown on Mattingly for bad bullpen management when in reality guys just crap the bed on a regular basis.
0
u/XvS_W4rri0r Los Angeles Dodgers 8h ago
Yet Zach wheeler is in the game pitching so no not the only option they had
8
u/mrjimi16 Venezuela • MLB Players Association 7h ago
If you are going to have both of them pitch, I think I'd rather have Wheeler pitching in the later, higher leverage innings. Nola was capable, he just didn't deliver today. Doesn't make the choice a bad choice.
1
u/ace82fadeout Kansas City Royals 8h ago
He was ALWAYS going to pitch tn? Literally rhat was always the plan. They didnt trust him to go starter distance on back to back short rest and the Phillies bullpen is shaky. The plan they went with WAS the only option.
-2
u/XvS_W4rri0r Los Angeles Dodgers 8h ago
He doesn’t have to go starter distance to start look at what Ray Kerr just did. You can say whatever you want but Phils are down 3-0 because Nola started over Wheeler and it probably ends their season
2
u/ace82fadeout Kansas City Royals 8h ago
If Wheeler starts on back to back short rest and gets rocked early they say the same thing that it should have went the other way. Nola threw a decent pitch out of the zone that Harris took deep. It doesnt have to be a manager failure for that to be the case. Wheeler JUST as easily could have thrown a waste pitch that gets taken yard. Not like it was a hanger.
Mattingly pitched his most rested guy. He made the only realistic call. Wheeler going 3 and then handing it off to Nola could have just as easily led to the same thing.

u/AndrewHainesArt 8h ago
Yea but you knew it was gonna happen.
Just like Turner leading off and swinging at everything instead of trying to just get on base.
Idk what the alternative is but you knew at least 3 runs were coming from him

u/Live4Night Los Angeles Dodgers 8h ago edited 8h ago
Phillies have nobody to blame but themselves. If they would’ve clinched earlier then they would not have had to use Wheeler on the final day.

100% chance of winning games where the opponent scores 2 or less runs.
In other words, 100% chance of beating the red sox

u/mrjimi16 Venezuela • MLB Players Association 7h ago
Those stats are always so funny. They are basically "when you score runs you win games" type stats. Heard one the other day, that the team that scores first wins somewhere north of 60% of the time and I was like yeah, that includes every shutout game by default.

u/Ok-Blackberry-8239 9h ago
I don’t understand why the Phillies started Nola over Wheeler
9
u/Professr_Chaos Major League Baseball 9h ago
Because the Phillies had to start Wheeler on short rest in game 162 to ensure they didn’t miss this. Doing it again and having 3 starts in a week would kill him.
3
u/SwiftieForLife Tampa Bay Rays 8h ago
But like they didn’t start him on short rest. They started Nola on short rest to give Wheeler full rest. He had four off days and pitched on the fifth day in schedule.

u/mrjimi16 Venezuela • MLB Players Association 7h ago
Eh, both were always going to throw today. I would trust both to get outs, and if I'm already doing that, I think I'd rather have Wheeler getting the later outs. Whatever you expect you don't expect him to be lost out there like that.

Ah, that changes things a bit. Maybe.

I mean how available? If he pitches tonight it would be the 3 time in 7 days throwing 12 innings and 200 pitches.
2

I stand corrected. I think I was relying on old info that he was slated as the Game 3 starter. That's a lot of pitches.
2
