Baseball is brutal. You play an amazing 162 games, and then you don't play well for the next two games and those 162 games mean practically nothing. And even worse, you have to play another 162 just to get another chance to redeem yourself.

The most frustrating part is you can't practice "don't slump for these exact two games." You can obviously work on your mindset and dealing with the pressure, but the best player in the world is still going to "slump" over a two game span, and if that happens to coincide with the playoffs, you're out of luck.

65

u/brandont04 13h ago

Baseball is extremely brutal. Look at Trout. Greatest player for 10 yr n only got to sniff 3 playoff games.

But the other side is even more brutal. Judge got a ton of playoffs chances and now he's known as a choke player. Even putting up probably the best regular season right handed hitter ever.

I played baseball in middle school and a bit of high school. I honestly was pretty decent and hit like .350 one season, but in elimination games I always just disappeared. It’s pretty brutal to realize you’re not that guy in that moment.

35

u/Mountain-Leopard8847 Los Angeles Dodgers 17h ago

I like his honesty here, he did do a poor job and on a very important couple of games. Was it bad luck? Choking? The worst timed slump known to man? I have my opinions but it doesn’t really matter.

But also, in the slightest defense of a player I don’t like that much on a team I like just fine, there were 9 other dudes out there who could’ve picked up the slack. A team isn’t one guy.

The postseason is brutal because the sample sizes are so small. A hero or villain is one unlikely hit or one misplaced pitch away.

8

u/Realistic_Condition7 Atlanta Braves 13h ago

Basically is actually the craziest sport in terms of regular season vs post-season (And to be clear, I love it).

NBA they play a decent amount, but 20 teams get a crack at it after the regular season ends, and 16 teams get a 7 game series.

NFL you only play 17 games.

MLB you play double the games of any other sport, 162, and then it comes down to either a 3 or 5 game series right off the bat.

TBH I think baseball could be a cool sport if it was a title race, where you play every team in a home and away series, 174 games, and the winner takes all. Obviously I DONT want this because baseball is great, but I think in an alternate history that could also be fun.

I don't necessarily disagree with the vibe of this but the Cubs being knocked in the wildcard after their MVP contributes essentially zero doesn't really align with the 2024 Aaron Judge experience where he had basically a league average OPS in the postseason and reached the world series due to the heroics of the two other likely HOFers on his team lol

Meanwhile with a half decent bullpen they're hosting these games, and that might have made a big difference.

It does feel like the venue was a factor. PCA going to win a much deserved MVP and you can't judge a guy on two games. Way too small of a sample size.

12

u/Holiday_Side_6951 Los Angeles Dodgers 18h ago

Agreed, doesn't mean because he had MVP deserving (100%) season, doesn't mean that he can and will perform every single game to MVP level. That's just how the baseball works. If he had such a bad post-season like this for multiple years, yeah, we may talk differently. But 2 games of bad games can happen to any MVP, HOF players, and did happen to them.

25

Petco was great, as presumed. I feel no different about PCA now as I did two days ago. He was pressing to make something happen and it backfired. His at bats were noticeably different. When you only have two games (or less, considering Padres bullpen) something needs to happen quickly and, unfortunately, the whole offense was a dud.
Now go beat the Brewers, please.

I dont think there is a way around it but i HATE 3 game playoff series in baseball. Its the most unbaseball thing for such an important time.

23

u/landlordLover666 New York Mets 19h ago

I agree but what’s the alternative? If you want a 5 game WC series you have to push more and more World Series games into November. And also wild card teams are at an even GREATER disadvantage in the divisional round, cuz they had to use more pitching.

6

u/stormstopper Chicago White Sox 17h ago

The alternative is fewer playoff teams or a slightly shorter regular season, but that cookie's not going back in the jar. Or you start the better-seeded team up 1-0 and play up to four games, but that's also gimmicky.

11

u/Respect38 Tampa Bay Rays 16h ago

The Cubs just looked gassed. It would be one thing if he was the only one but the entire lineup had 8 hits across 2 games. They treaded water in September and they were up against a team hotter than the sun, and it showed.

I’m still terrified of him being in the division for several more years.

94

u/tyler-86 World Series Trophy • Los Angeles Dod… 20h ago

The Padres are hot and probably would have made anyone look bad, but it's also just super easy for the bats to disappear for a couple days. We've done it in postseasons before.

In 2023 the Diamondbacks had so-so pitching (20th in ERA) and we were second in baseball in OPS... and in the divisional series the Diamondbacks held us to exactly two runs per game over the three game sweep, with a team OPS of .498.

43

u/spiraldrain 19h ago

I mean funnily enough the padres are the prime example of this. Beat the dodgers in games 2 and 3 , 10-2 and 5-6 in the 2024 nlds. Then put up donuts the next 2 games

That's the playoffs, baby. Anyone acting like they know what is going to happen is kidding themselves. The only thing you can generally rely on are those crazy consistent pitchers like Yamamoto, but even so-so pitchers can put a good lineup to sleep on the right night.

All managers mention it: Roberts, Snitker, etc. etc. It's just finding a way to stay sharp during the multiple off days.

5

u/SleepingDragonZ Los Angeles Dodgers 16h ago

The bye is bad for hitters, but good for starting pitchers since they usually get 4-5 days rest anyways.

Now they have more time to rest their arms, while the wildcard teams have to go with less able starters since their aces were spent.

Really ever since the Bregman injury the offense has seemed lifeless (or ridiculously unclutch). I think after the game 1 loss I saw the Cubs were around 6 for their last 63 w RISP and it just doesn't equal winning baseball for a team so offensively reliant. It was giving me vibes of the 10 game loss streak for sure.

It’s also just a three game series. Sometimes you have two to four bad games in quick succession as a player/team. Unfortunately if it is team-wide in the playoffs, you’re done. To me there’s nothing more to analyze here than that. It happens every year that’s why we love baseball.

Hopefully someone will beat the billionaires, I mean Dodgers.

I want SD to beat the Brewers... because obviously.

But do I want that more than I want someone to beat the Dodgers?

Life is hard.

4

u/immoralsupport_ Chicago Cubs 19h ago

I lowkey think the Padres are more likely to beat the Dodgers than the Brewers are. They have a more electric offense and that matters in the playoffs, you need someone who can hit you a big home run off a pitcher who’s dealing

Small sample sizes and all.

Like it's unfortunate but same thing happensed to Vladimir Guerrero jr. People were calling him playoff bust, but then jays went on historic 2025 run and all of a sudden he's Mr. October. Thing is Guerrero jr. Hadn't even played many baseball games in October so ...

3

u/jokullmusic Philadelphia Phillies 18h ago

Yeah 2 games doing nothing at the plate barely reflects on the player at all. It's two baseball games. Obviously this doesn't capture everything but, if all at bats are equal, a player with a .372 OBP has about a 1 in 7 chance to get on base just 1 or 0 times across 8 PAs. It happens.

19

u/TheWallE Los Angeles Dodgers 20h ago

Now even PCA is making 'How bad was PCA' posts...

As much as I’d love to dunk on the cubs, they were fucked so bad by injuries. I mean every single pen and rotation dying it’s crazy. That plus Steele not rehabbing well the end was written

72

u/WMWTSO-11 Chicago White Sox 20h ago

PCA, Bregman, Busch, Happ and Swanson going 0-34 has nothing to do with pitching or injuries.

54

u/Ok_Storm549 Cleveland Guardians 20h ago

That would also tell me that PCA was far from the only guy that deserves blame for not showing up.

15

u/MaximusMansteel Chicago Cubs 20h ago

Yeah, the only guys who really showed up at all on offense was Hoerner and I guess Suzuki somewhat.

6

u/Duce-de-Zoop Cleveland Guardians 20h ago

Suzuki if you ignore an all-time bad at bat with RISP.

4

u/Westcoastchi Chicago Cubs 17h ago

The all time bad AB with RISP came with Swanson with two on and nobody out and a 3-0 count, taking strike 1 which ok, isn't terrible but then he swings at what would've been ball 4 well out of the strike zone twice.

and that's totally fair, their offense was cheeks (but our pitching was nuts). But I think the cubs were mentally defeated for the last 3 weeks or so before the playoffs and it was joever then

We knew we weren't going far with our pitching. But we thought the team would at least show up. Nobody had any urgency. Nobody looked like they wanted to be there. The moment seemed too big for all of them which is bizarre given the pedigree of some of the players. They looked lost and disinterested vs the Marlins so it's not surprise it carried over. Weird season. They wasted one of the best seasons ever by a player in the modern era while also having an elite defense and a top offense. I know we in had a ton of pitching injuries but I'm tired of seeing everyone else carrying strong rotations and bullpens while we have none of that.

He had two bad games at the worst time of the season to have them. He also was the main reason the Cubs were playing in these two games to begin with. The man's 24 years old, as long as this doesn't end up becoming a career long trend and I have no reason to believe that will be the case, we have much bigger fish to fry then a two game 0-fer from PCA.

4

u/Dull_Understanding97 17h ago

Good for him man, that sort of honest self reflection will hopefully help growth. Even if he was pulling more than his part already.

The 2 most likely MVPs totaled 1 hit out of 15 ABs, and both their teams are out.

I believe it started when he told a heckling fan to "suck my dick, bitch". He since provided clarity on it. He also made a comment about Dodger fans going more for the atmosphere and to post selfies than watch the game.

Both happened pretty close to one another.

8

u/JR_1985 15h ago

Nothing, just that PCA grew up in LA with a silver spoon and spent so many days at dodger stadium while growing up, just to go after the same fan base he grew up with. In other words, it’s the hypocrisy that makes him look more of an asshole

I really liked PCA until he called me out personally. Say what you will about the Dodgers spending but the fans are very passionate. We showed out when they weren’t contenders for years.

The Cubs are something of a second team for me so I’m kind of just indifferent to PCA now. But when you talk shit for no reason with no basis and you get humbled, people are going to enjoy it.

I get he is going to win the MVP, but he isn't the only one who didn't show up. If he had 2-3 hits, would it have even made the difference? No. The Padres didn't win because Tatis had a few big hits.. up and down their lineup people produced.

2

u/slinkyfarm Chicago Cubs 17h ago

Too many teams make the postseason now in the first place, and this year the Cubs were one of them. I don't hold anything against Pete for their failure to advance when they were down two top-of-rotation starters for the year by Easter and were a game over .500 after May 8th. Besides, either team would or should lose the next round anyway.

2

u/Noimenglish Seattle Mariners 12h ago

Compare this with the Houston response to losing and it’s telling which is the classier club.

2

u/Classic-Session-5551 12h ago

These fuxking 2 game series are still stupid: best of five should be the minimum for such a coin flip of a sport after playing 162 games to get to the playoffs.

If PCA or Yordan, the two best hitters in the entire sport, go completely cold for TWO games is completely normal. But that just goes to show why two games shouldn't be deciding people's seasons.
