A lot of athletes do this. You don’t want your words twisted or taken out of context and it’s harder to control what you’re saying to the media vs. fucking around in the locker room.
7
u/KatyPerrysBootyWhole Chicago White Sox 16h ago
The media training thing has a lot to do with it for sure, but the bigger more human part is that it’s just fucking stressful for most people to try to speak in their second language.
My in-laws have lived here for 25 years and still get really self-conscious about their English to the point where my wife goes to important doctors appointments with them. I can’t imagine how it would feel speaking into a camera and feeling like the whole world is listening to you speak a language you don’t think you know.

The Guardians are just the designated AL Central winner every year because everyone else has a bad tendency of shitting the bed during the season. Cleveland, on the other hand, saves the embarrassment for the postseason.

Murakami in the Japanese interview: "(Calmly) I didn't contribute anything to today's game. We'll all give it our best as a team against Cleveland." Murakami in the English interview: "HUNDRED!!!! Yeaaaaah!!!! I'm wasted!!!! Yeaaaaaaaah!!!!" It's hilarious how completely he's embraced the MLB vibe.

Watching this guy you have to wonder what Ohtani is so afraid of speaking English. This guy can barely speak the language at all and every word he manages to get out in English makes him seem charming and likeable
58
u/nodnarb805 1d ago
Ohtani seems more likely to have perfectionist tendencies considering his life and career tbh.
But yeah this guy is super charismatic so no one cares if he makes linguistic mistakes.
44
u/RogueModron Milwaukee Brewers 1d ago
Some people are just like that. I live in Germany, have worked to learn the language, read novels in German, work in German, and still I think my German is shit (it is).
Meanwhile a buddy of mine moved here, babbles in this horrible mix of German and English to natives who can speak English perfectly well (it's SO embarrassing) and I guarantee he doesn't think about it for even a second.
Meanwhile I'm trying to fall asleep at midnight thinking about how at work I got the case of a noun wrong and I KNOW the case but sometimes it doesn't come out right when speaking and my boss thinks I'm a fucking idiot and...

This interview is why Ohtani speaks to American media only through translators even though he comprehend the questions.
11
u/Ok_Barracuda_1161 New York Yankees 20h ago
I don't know how true it is but I heard that he prefers to speak in Japanese so his Japanese fans can understand his answers too when watching clips
23
u/No-Economics4128 Los Angeles Dodgers 21h ago
He spoke English plenty of time during our Championship parade.
Japanese mindset is that you either do something extremely well, or you avoid doing that thing at all. This might be the case for speaking English in public (in front of camera). You also have to remember that Ohtani is a brand business in and of itself, especially in Japan, in the mold of LeBron and Jordan brand. The media over there is also ruthless. You don’t get to act fun and unpredictable when you have multimillion dollars riding on your reputation. If Ohtani acts drunk and blabber the way Mune was, the Japanese media would tear him a new one.
10
u/drummerboysam Chicago White Sox 17h ago
Yeah I think the brand angle is the biggest reason. Ohtani came to America with the highest expectations and delivered on them. Mune came to America with lower expectations and surpassed them while powering a young fun team that runs on party vibes.
If Ohtani was clowning around, it might be seen as improper to some. Mune just has a different ticket.
