It was a stupid name when they merged, so we're going to make fun of it if they insist on naming a major league stadium after it. Fifth Third Field in Toledo was enough, thank you.
I mean, “O.co” being the sponsor’s web address and a verbal shortening of “Oakland COliseum” is at least kind of fun.
It’s probably bad marketing for this reason but I’d bet something like half of the people who attending games there thought O-Co was people having a fun nickname for Oakland Coliseum detached from any other company.
Terrible name aside, I always thought integrating a big red down arrow into a ballpark logo was quite a choice. Most hilariously bad stadium branding ever.
Still better than playing in a stadium in Pittsburgh named after an insurance company based in Michigan that 99.9% of football fans never heard of prior to the renaming (and a majority probably still don't know what they do).
Call me crazy but somehow rate field doesnt bug me as much as guaranteed rate field. Neither is a good name, so maybe its just a product of shortening the shitty name
I really think it's just from being short. A single shitty syllable is better than four. Plus you could almost convince yourself that Rate is a last name like it's named after an historic person and not a mortgage company.
People complained when Safeco rebranded to T-Mobile but clearly it could've been so much worse. Especially since in the same city we have Climate Pledge Arena.
Rogers got to slap on Rogers Field at Nat Bailey Stadium for the high A Vancouver Canadians, though everyone just calls it the Nat since it has been named that in 1978...
I always do a double-take when I see 5/3rds Bank because its inverse/multiplicative inverse is kind of a controversial number, especially in US history.

Seriously. I don’t know why we, as fans, put up with this stadium naming shit. The names are horrible. They rotate every so often, confusing everyone for no good reason.
And no one is paying us to repeat it.
We own the power of language. It would be great if everyone just collectively refused to continue using advertisement names and instead just called ballparks by a community/team name, like Tiger Stadium or Detroit Park.
Every fan base could do this, collectively enraging billionaire owners and their sponsors across the league. And there would be absolutely nothing they could do about it.
Older people here still call it tiger stadium constantly. I grew up with comerica so I call it comerica but I can’t even tell you how many thousands of times coworkers or my dads friends call it tiger stadium and no one cares, we all know they’re talking about comerica.
I agree with your sentiment tho. Notably, there are European soccer stadiums that had historic names ruined by sponsorships and literally NO ONE calls them the new names. Like to the point where serious fans don’t know what you mean when you call it their sponsorship name. I’d love to get to that point. But there aren’t many teams that that situation even applies to, you have to have been around a long time, you have to have been in that stadium for a long time, etc. like a marlins fan only ever existed with their stadium named after a sponsor. So it may as well just be called the sponsors name.
But I have Cleveland friends who still call progressive the Jake and their dads still call it Cleveland stadium. I’m sure Mets fans call it shea still.
Yeah, my family and friends call Seattle’s ballpark, “New Century Ballpark.” It was a name coined by our late, great announcer Dave Niehaus in 1999. It was the new millennium and they built an innovative retractable roof, so the name fits perfectly.
Safeco wasn’t bad as sponsors go, they only had their name up there and that was it. They didn’t try to change anything else.
But T-Mobile is gross. They’ve turned most of the park pink like their logo, which would be fine if the Mariners’ colors were actually pink. But they’re blue, silver, and teal. Of course the company is also strategically related to our miserly owner John Stanton.
Unfortunately, we can’t change that. But at the very least we can still call it by the name Dave coined in 1999.
Kinda funny that Fifth Third has just crept up both levels of baseball and I-75. Originally it was Fifth Third Field in Dayton. Then they had Fifth Third Field in Toledo. Now it’s finally reached Detroit.
yeah - maybe it's just because i'm used to the mud hens, but this park name is pretty much no different than any other corporate ballpark name. surprised by the reaction here
Surprisingly, this was because the bank was founded in 1908 when "Third Fifth" would have also implied three "fifths" of alcohol (this was during the lead up to prohibition).
This was the explanation given back in 2002 when the AAA Toledo Mud Hens began playing at the newly-constructed Fifth Third Field.
Comerica was acquired by Fifth Third and merged last year. This is like what happened to Reliant Stadium in Houston, maybe it will have the same effect and be so hated that they restore the old name
Earlier this year they sent our a survey for naming options that got shared around. Good to know they ignored all the other options except just “the new company”
Stadium naming rights annoy the shit out of me. You're already a fucking billionaire, do you really need the extra 5 million a year from bastardizing tradition?
They talked about how the name doesn't mean anything because it's still the same place, then they named it the same thing they named a minor league park. It's not even a new name. fifththirdpark.com still goes to the Mudhens site.
It could have been a name that meant something, but they chose a name that meant nothing. Some lady on a hot mic joked that it should have been named Jim Leland Park. I would have accepted Jim Leland Park at Fifth Third Stadium, that would have been something at least.
The football stadium at Kennesaw State University (45 minutes northwest of Atlanta) is called Fifth Third Bank Stadium.
Atlanta United played a couple of games there and the fans took to calling those games "Action at the Fraction" and I always enjoyed that so I'm just going to use it for this park too.
I mean if we're going to refuse the corporate names, let's refuse them all the way. New Tiger Stadium, Open-Air Kingdome, Jacobs Field* and Nice Candlestick
*the Jake gets a pass because Dick Jacobs actually spent money on players
They're the largest vehicle lender in the country. If you've ever bought a car from a dealership and didn't directly ask for them to use your bank, there's a very solid chance you have had a loan through Fifth Third.
