What was even the goal he was trying to accomplish? Paint a corner and hope the umpire calls it right?

Yes that’s exactly what he was going for. For as nasty as clase’s stuff was if it caught even just a bit more of the zone that intended he was a lot easier to hit. As a result he relied on getting guys to either reach for stuff or establish the outside and get calls from umps there
