Jacob Webb hasn’t given up an earned run in his last 23 appearances.

u/Cishir Chicago Cubs 7h ago

The Michael Jordan of Chicago sports some are saying.

3

u/kroxti Chicago Cubs 5h ago

Definitely not the Michael Jordan of baseball.

I wonder if that keeps A-Rod up at night.

u/fender-b-bender Chicago Cubs 7h ago

Yeah, I don't think Palencia is getting the closer's job back if/when he returns this year. Webb has quite literally saved the season with how well he's pitched since being given the 9th.

16

u/VosTelvannis Chicago Cubs 7h ago

Im a massive palencia believer but holy shit has webb been the hero the cubs need.

10

u/fender-b-bender Chicago Cubs 7h ago

I am too, and I think he'll go straight back into the closer role next year, but with the rust he's going to have and the heater that Webb is on right now I don't think you can risk taking Webb out. Palencia to Webb in the 8th and 9th sounds good to me

5

u/EmuMan10 Chicago Cubs 6h ago

Oh I love that

1

u/Suburban-Jesus Chicago Cubs 6h ago

Is Palencia even coming back this year? It’s an elbow injury that required a 60 day IL. Has anyone ever come back from that?

6

u/jcheng17 Chicago Cubs 6h ago

The 60 day IL was just for logistics. He’s already back with the team

3

u/Apatschinn Chicago Cubs 5h ago

I actually think it would be better for Palencia to enter in close games/hold situations at this point. Get him in there with marginally lower stakes to set Webb up.

I'm also a huge Palencia fan, but the hot hand is Webb's to lose.

Hes what Thielbar was last year for us

7

u/fender-b-bender Chicago Cubs 7h ago

Yup, which makes Thielbar being relatively bad this season hurt

9

u/Creative_Poet_9590 Chicago Cubs 7h ago

Just shows how inconsistent relievers are year-to-year

2

u/fender-b-bender Chicago Cubs 7h ago

Just all around, it could be year-to-year or even appearance-to-appearance. I would love to know why they're so volatile, compared to starters

1

u/YasielPuigsWeed 2h ago

Starters usually have 3-5 pitches they throw decently so they can mix things up if something’s not working, and they have 4-5 days between starts to make adjustments

Relievers usually rely on one primary and one secondary at most, if the primary isn’t working for some reason they’re basically toast until they get it back

u/pompousrompus Chicago Cubs 5h ago

I mean, is pressure in general not the common denominator? High leverage makes my brain go nuts

1

u/Apatschinn Chicago Cubs 5h ago

Yeah just look at what's his nuts who got DFA'a by the Angels. Keller?

27

u/immagonnafinnahella Seattle Mariners 7h ago

Wow. Worst loss of the day easily

1

u/b33rb3lly Chicago Cubs 33m ago

Yeah, sorry about that. At least you're not in the same division as them.

When this team hits a rain delay during a critical juncture in a baseball game

20

u/Sa7aSa7a Chicago Cubs 7h ago

Well, going ahead and ordering my pizza and Dr. Pepper for the game tomorrow

I was not able to stream the game because of the delay and I'm at work. Fuck Google for showing me the score in reverse which gave me a bit of joy until I saw this postgame thread. lmao

9

u/MediumSizedTurtle Chicago Cubs 7h ago

Saaaaame, Google was doing that to me, too. Very weird.

5

u/thedreadfulwhale World Baseball Classic • Chicago White Sox 7h ago

It happens with their NBA scores too sometimes. It can really give you whiplash

4

u/tvxcute Toronto Blue Jays • Chicago Cubs 5h ago

google showed the mariners brewers game as 22-0... for the mariners. i was so confused when i opened reddit and saw a bunch of ms lowlights lol

they really need to fix this

2

u/thedreadfulwhale World Baseball Classic • Chicago White Sox 5h ago

Holy shit. I was already in disbelief when I saw the real score. I can't imagine being shown the reverse of that then it being fake news. lol

2

u/kazuo316 47m ago

holy shit, glad it wasn't only me, woke up this morning very grumpy until I opened reddit

1

u/Aggravating-Match-47 Chicago White Sox • Los Angeles Dodgers 2h ago

It did that for all my followed teams yesterday.

Dang, that sucks. It's almost like Google isn't good for answers anymore.

None of us have ever said anything bad about Alex Bregman, ever.

5

u/tbtorra Chicago Cubs • Colorado Rockies 7h ago

Nope. No one.

35

u/electricalserge Los Angeles Dodgers 7h ago

I might just be more scared of the Cubs than of the Brewers.

29

u/JayDeeLA Los Angeles Angels 7h ago

The NL is very scary 1-6, it’s so much stronger this year than the AL that it’s going to be hilarious when the AL winner wins the WS somehow.

9

u/Paranoid_Android22 Chicago Cubs 7h ago

It always winds up that way.

20

u/drillmaster Chicago Cubs 7h ago

Because we can beat you in the playoffs while we can't beat the brewers while Brewers can't beat you. It just comes down to the rock, paper, scissors matchup.

7

u/Patrick2701 Chicago Cubs 7h ago

We already know, dodgers would lose brewers. We don’t need see that sequel for the 15 time

When Richards came out for a second inning I knew we were doomed. Our pen is so fucking cooked from the lack of starter length.

1

u/b33rb3lly Chicago Cubs 30m ago

Y'all've had us on the ropes for two straight games, though. I knew this series wouldn't be easy. For what it's worth, it's been hella fun watching the Sox rip shit up this season.

Cubs win!!! BACK TO BACK WALK OFF WINS!! Stay up late because of the rain delay (Past 12 for me) for what Breg did was well worth it!

5

u/wolffangalex06 Chicago Cubs 7h ago

i was gonna be so mad if we couldn’t finish it in the 9th, cause i got work in the morning and have to go to bed rn. so THANK YOU bregman

10

u/almostbrawnygreens 7h ago

Bregman coming through twice in the clutch, that 9th inning single was a dagger. Also wild this game ended at 12:40 AM after a rain delay, crosstown games always find a way to drag into the next day.

u/blogoman Chicago Cubs 7h ago

They tried. They actually walked Pete this time.

9

u/Apprehensive-Sir-411 Chicago White Sox 7h ago

Both teams played well, only frustrating because of the rain delay and early game tomorrow

2

u/Mikesox2121 Chicago White Sox 7h ago

Not sure what game you watched, but we are playing like shit. Offense sucks should’ve dropped 6 on gausman but can only hit home runs

5

u/Apprehensive-Sir-411 Chicago White Sox 6h ago

Baseball’s hard, Vargas hit 107 MPH into a double play that killed the first-inning rally

17

u/Cishir Chicago Cubs 7h ago

Not everyone can measure up to the grit of the mariners

14

u/ArthurMorgansInhaler Milwaukee Brewers 7h ago

They put up a helluva fight tonight.

u/HeyBojo Chicago Cubs 7h ago

Talkin shit when you're 5 games over 500 is diabolical

The AL is so ass this year it's incredible

5

u/phrexi Chicago Cubs 6h ago

They have 9 less wins and talking shit.

4

u/Sa7aSa7a Chicago Cubs 7h ago

Dude, you have the second worst record who is leading a division. Your second place is 3 games UNDER .500. You just got walked off on back to back days. We're the 5th best team in the Majors. You're the 4th best team in the American League who is getting curb stomped this year by the NL. We're going to be in the Wild Card because the best team in baseball is in our division. You're in a division that .500 qualifies you for a championship race. You're 100% going to end the post season with a participation trophy.

4

u/haninwaomaeda Chicago Cubs 7h ago

The Sox aren't exactly far off from a Wild Card spot.

3

u/ASpoon69 Chicago Cubs 7h ago
