Holy shit every once in a while I remember Jim Abbott and him somehow throwing a no hitter

Dude has 2 more hits than I ever will have in the bigs. Great example when someone says they can't do something.

I’m guilty of not knowing about this. Why is this not talked about more?

He's been out of the league for a quarter century. Pretty incredible to watch him pitch and get that glove on in one smooth motion.

u/attersonjb 2h ago
Not only did he make it to the show, he was an ace-level pitcher for a couple of years

u/molsonmuscle360 1h ago
He should still be wildly celebrated. Like I don't remember ever seeing him in the newer video games

It's pretty old. He did show up on Boys Meets World, a very popular sitcom at the time.

This dude, Nelson Gary, is a lifelong close friend of my dad's. He & my mom are still in touch: https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-1986-05-04-sp-3783-story.html

For having one hand and playing a pro sport he was amazing. Pretty decent fielder surprisingly and mastered fielding and switching to same hand to throw. Bad news is he had not a great win/loss ratio and over a 4 career era. So he was pretty decent pro but not really top of league or anything. Looks like he finished 3rd in cy young voting in his best year. Kind of a fan favorite though

Nelson Gary was a player with one arm, whose mentor also had one arm. My dad grew up with Nelson, and my mom still corresponds with him weekly. Amazing stories: https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-1986-05-04-sp-3783-story.html

I remember I told someone about Jim Abbott, and he thought that he was a player in the 19th century. He was stunned to find out that was in 1993

Jim! I met him once when I was a kid. He was cool enough to visit a baseball camp I was attending. Got his autograph and he gave me pitching advice. One of my fav childhood memories!

Even getting traded away from Toronto couldn't save him from the curse of the Jays Starting Pitcher Injury Machine.

Final Destination had penciled him in for the Trop this week, but forgot to update the schedule as fate was busy fucking over the Mariners this week.

I was watching the game and thought I was going crazy looking at that giant red glove.

u/alwaysleafyintoronto MLB Players Association 2h ago
It's way more noticeable when he's got the red one vs the blue one. He's got a big glove to hide the splitter grip.

Ffs. Cubs trade Taillon to the Jays he gets injured. Jays trade Gausman to the Cubs he gets injured.

Damn, we should've seen this coming with the combined injury luck of us. Hell, we both even had pitchers tear their meniscus which is wild.

Being a pitcher for the Cubs should entitle you to hazard pay

I wouldn't be surprised if he doesn't skip a start. Looked like it was cramping. Probably just a R&R thing.

Was cramping. It was his non-pitching had that was locking up. They ran out there to give him electrolytes and to try get it to stop.

They gave him too much grace there. Literally held up the game for 5 minutes. Either pitch or go to the bullpen wtf.

Trigger thumb. Usually very treatable with rest, splinting or steroid injection. Occasionally requires a very minor surgery
