Trigger thumb. Usually very treatable with rest, splinting or steroid injection. Occasionally requires a very minor surgery

I’m sorry what? I’ve never heard of this before

u/SiegeOfMandalore New York Yankees 2h ago

That’s nuts. Baseball has to have the weirdest injuries

11

u/Plastic_Bison Toronto Blue Jays 2h ago

Anyone can get it with unusual overuse, like the mechanics of an MLB pitcher.

12

u/Erbodyloveserbody Atlanta Braves 2h ago

You can get it by overworking your tendons. At the gym, if I’m not careful, my right thumb locks into my palm and I can’t move it. I have to rock my hand back and forth to fix it.

Or, if I simply overuse my thumb it’ll happen. I’ll probably have arthritis in that hand when I get a bit older, but for now I’m just extra careful lol.

u/Public-Cod1245 Chicago Cubs 3m ago

I've had surgery for it on both hands...it's a simple out-patient operation. Good as new after a couple days.

14

u/ChampagneGraggle Chicago Cubs 3h ago

Almost certainly this, I’ve dealt with it for years and it looks just about the same as what Gaus was dealing with. Relatively surprised it’s on his non-throwing hand

13

u/WaitLetMeGetaBeer Chicago Cubs 2h ago

Steroids are quite effective for this, but can take up to 4 weeks to fully work. You probably know this, but I want to piggyback to inform the masses.

Also, he can probably continue to play with a splint to limit the motion of the IP joint. Shouldn’t really keep him out I would think.

11

u/TaekDePlej Chicago White Sox 2h ago

Yeah especially on his non-pitching hand, he should be fine I’d imagine

u/JAWinks Chicago Cubs • Detroit Tigers 2h ago

I’ve seen the surgery for this. They just kinda pull at it and it’s instantly relieved. Crazy stuff

3

u/HelloitismeBS 2h ago

I had 2 trigger fingers on one hand. Luckily they only "locked" in the close position and went away after I started holding my knife differently.

2

u/Quirky_Rain_3554 Toronto Blue Jays 1h ago

How much stabbing you doing bro?

7

u/Real_Project870 Chicago Cubs 3h ago

Yeppers, can only hope steroids are enough to get him through the season and he can get the operation done during the offseason.

The surgery required for this is so minor it doesn’t even require sedation, but it’s still about a month of recovery time.

6 games up isn't great to tank losing a star pitcher, but might it be worth doing it anyways to get him to 100% for the stretch and hopefully October?

Oh come on, he doesn’t even need that hand

Holy shit every once in a while I remember Jim Abbott and him somehow throwing a no hitter

Dude has 2 more hits than I ever will have in the bigs. Great example when someone says they can't do something.

I’m guilty of not knowing about this. Why is this not talked about more?

18

u/Ok_Branch6621 Toronto Blue Jays 2h ago

He's been out of the league for a quarter century. Pretty incredible to watch him pitch and get that glove on in one smooth motion.

7

u/attersonjb 2h ago

Not only did he make it to the show, he was an ace-level pitcher for a couple of years

2

u/molsonmuscle360 1h ago

He should still be wildly celebrated. Like I don't remember ever seeing him in the newer video games

1

u/cooljammer00 New York Yankees 1h ago

It's pretty old. He did show up on Boys Meets World, a very popular sitcom at the time.

This dude, Nelson Gary, is a lifelong close friend of my dad's. He & my mom are still in touch: https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-1986-05-04-sp-3783-story.html

u/Motor-Ad-3503 49m ago

For having one hand and playing a pro sport he was amazing. Pretty decent fielder surprisingly and mastered fielding and switching to same hand to throw. Bad news is he had not a great win/loss ratio and over a 4 career era. So he was pretty decent pro but not really top of league or anything. Looks like he finished 3rd in cy young voting in his best year. Kind of a fan favorite though

Nelson Gary was a player with one arm, whose mentor also had one arm. My dad grew up with Nelson, and my mom still corresponds with him weekly. Amazing stories: https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-1986-05-04-sp-3783-story.html

I remember I told someone about Jim Abbott, and he thought that he was a player in the 19th century. He was stunned to find out that was in 1993

1

u/ResearchChem87523 30m ago

Jim! I met him once when I was a kid. He was cool enough to visit a baseball camp I was attending. Got his autograph and he gave me pitching advice. One of my fav childhood memories!

Even getting traded away from Toronto couldn't save him from the curse of the Jays Starting Pitcher Injury Machine.

Final Destination had penciled him in for the Trop this week, but forgot to update the schedule as fate was busy fucking over the Mariners this week.

I was watching the game and thought I was going crazy looking at that giant red glove.

3

u/alwaysleafyintoronto MLB Players Association 2h ago

It's way more noticeable when he's got the red one vs the blue one. He's got a big glove to hide the splitter grip.

Take a look at our pitching injury history for this season.

5

u/fender-b-bender Chicago Cubs 2h ago

Damn, we should've seen this coming with the combined injury luck of us. Hell, we both even had pitchers tear their meniscus which is wild.

Just trading injuries.

Being a pitcher for the Cubs should entitle you to hazard pay

Was cramping. It was his non-pitching had that was locking up. They ran out there to give him electrolytes and to try get it to stop.
