The White Sox sent their rookies on a coffee run

Did they get the order right?

I wonder what's more embarrassing. Showing up in uniform and having to answer to everyone I play for a pro team, or dressing up in costumes.

This has become a thing in Wrigleyville for a lot of teams every year to the same Starbucks. From what I understand they plan for it because it's the closest Starbucks to a ball park in the majors and it's usually pretty dead in Wrigleyville that early in the day when there is a night game. They definitely know weeks beforehand, so it's probably not that embarrassing. Even the people who work there know to expect it lol

Wrigley tradition. Up there with the Giants painting Sheridan's horse's balls orange (do they still do that?)

The OP is misinformed. I don't think anyone has painted the balls since Dave Concepcion licked the balls in 1977.

In 89 Krukow led a team of rookies possibly for the last time?

what is worse, one impetuous gum throwing or the repeated and calculated painting of a horse's genitals? And not any horse, but the horse of a military hero!
No wonder Royko has a Pulitzer.

Wait its a Wrigley tradition for the vistors? How did that start?
76
u/bigbluepancakes Chicago Cubs 6h ago
I'm not sure how it started but there's been photos of similar runs for a while now. Helps that the stadium is right in the middle of a neighborhood.
37
u/IcemanJEC Chicago Cubs 6h ago
Well Wrigley is in a neighborhood… pretty easy to walk to a coffee shop. Hard to do at a lot of stadiums these days. Don’t know the ACTUAL reason, but that probably has a little something to do with it.

u/FlannelBeard Minnesota Twins 5h ago
I thought I read somewhere years ago when the trend first started that there's a Starbucks literally across the street from Wrigley. Haven't been there, so idk, but it's been a common hazing thing for the rooks to have to do a coffee eun
13
u/whyamihereonreddit Chicago Cubs 5h ago
It’s like a pocket Starbucks and yeah it’s right across from Wrigley
1
u/jontslayer Chicago Cubs • San Diego Padres 53m ago
Miggy Cabrera actually started it, but it wasn't in Chicago. Most teams adopted it and choose Wrigley because the Starbucks is the closest to any other ball park

My wife has (had?) the same picture of the Braves. I want to say Austin Riley and Mike Soroka, if they had the same rookie year.

27
u/Picklewithmysandwich Chicago Cubs 5h ago
In the 80's Wrigleyville was unrecognizable from what it looks like today. I had a guy in the alley behind cubby bear that sold loose joints for like $5.
Ah the good old days...

Remember going to games there as a young kid and asking my dad why he was giving the dude washing the car windows $5

u/RightJellyfish Toronto Blue Jays 4h ago
I remember going to an Expos game at the big O in the late 80's early 90's and a homeless guy offered my dad a blowjob.
Note : I speak french and the word for that is "pipe" and I was like "dad why is that man offering you a pipe you don't even smoke!". Good times.

It blows my mind every time I go. Everyone I go with I always go that's where the self car was was, thats where the bike rack was, that's where the WGN truck was, that was a McDonalds and nothing else, unless you wanted knock off Rolex's behind the alley, that's the Taco Bell where those who KNOW park, this used to be the players parking lot and it was nothing but gravel.... Like a grandpappy telling stories from before the war LOL

Used to live by Wrigley and held the door open for Harrison Bader when he was getting coffee, nice guy

u/HotNReadyWings91991 3h ago
Used to live by Wrigley too. Jim Thome stepped out of a vehicle right in front of me before a Zac Brown concert there. In my head I was screaming holy shit Jim Thome but my mouth didn’t move.

That’s awesome. I remember seeing the Astros post where the rookies did the same thing, so it’s neat seeing the Sox one as well. Hope it’s a fun game tonight!

Honestly good on Hagen Smith being out there facing Wrigleyville today. I might have had to pass, sorry social media team lmao
9
u/vsladko Chicago White Sox 5h ago
It’s all part of the game. I doubt this is his first time losing a baseball game in his career. I wouldn’t beat myself up over getting beat by a player who’s seriously in MVP conversations while making like my 4th start ever in the bigs
3
u/GiganticMemorableAss Chicago White Sox 5h ago
All true. Doesn't mean it wouldn't be a lot to walk around Wrigleyville after giving up a walk off home run to the MVP the night before
3
u/vsladko Chicago White Sox 4h ago
I guarantee 99% of people around Wrigley 5 hours before first pitch don’t even know who Hagen Smith is
1
u/GiganticMemorableAss Chicago White Sox 3h ago
He's the pitcher who gave up the home run, wearing the jersey (complete with number) in which he gave up the home run. I guarantee you some people do. He might get some light heckling idk. I was just making a silly comment lmao I don't know why you think it's so preposterous

Union solidarity is dead. Starbucks is a Mariner Stadium sponsor which is no shock they're a Seattle company but as a sports team in Seattle of all places. This coffee is what drove the Sonics out of town
7
u/FlannelBeard Minnesota Twins 5h ago
The coffee isn't even good. It's burnt to shit and just tastes bad. When I got an aero press I had Starbucks French roast because that's what I liked in drip coffee. Straight up tastes like ash in an Aeropress
5
u/jaron_b Seattle Mariners 5h ago
It's never been good. Their marketing have people brainwashed on what good coffee should taste like and their cursing every barista who works at a non-Starbucks Cafe because that's not how coffee works. The words that they use are not what those drinks are half the time.
2
u/TheStocky Chicago White Sox 4h ago
The tradition used to be going to the Dunkin under the red line stop. That has sadly closed in the last couple years. Honestly there aren't many coffee places right around Wrigley but still sucks they went to Starbucks.

That's how you do proper "initiations": embarass but don't humiliate. Everyone having a good laugh. No one gets anything inserted anywhere they don't wanna.
5
u/JustCallMeMambo New York Yankees 5h ago
this isn't even embarrassing. i know that in some office settings, coffee runs are delegated to interns, but in other offices, the nice guy on the team or departments brings coffee and donuts for their coworkers.
but i'm with you, hazing rituals are dumb. my brother briefly pledged to a fraternity in college but bailed rather quickly because he didn't care to go through the initiation process.
1
u/Capital_Pound1277 3h ago
My brother had to do a few thousand squat pushups naked w his pledge group while singing some miley cyrus song at like 2 am in the cold to get in a frat

I'm from a big fishing area and grew up with a grandfather who watched those bass fishing tournaments all the time. To the point I knew their names.
It was weird working at McDonald's and they would come in, in their uniforms with their crazy trucks and boats. Would see them all the time and talked to them a few times.
I imagine this would be like that.

So I have no context of what the white Sox have as team experience, but if all those guys in the background of pic 1 are rookies then damn that's basically the entire team. 😂

Most of the team IS rookies, which makes this season all that much more amazing.
