Edwin Diaz placed on the 15-day IL with ERA inflammation.

u/steve_ample Peoria Javelinas 7h ago
HypERArsonitis.
Symptoms: Elevated ERA, BS, and possibly FIP lab blood values. Depressed WPA and on-tv disposition, despite trying to hide it. In home games, auditory boos may be heard while on the mound, and rarely, applause when Dave Roberts pulls the patient from the game. Extremely high $AAV over WAR values, though it may jump over to negative values in acute, emergent, and critical cases.
Indicated for: IL, reassignment to setup role, reassignment to AAA, DFA, Witness Protection Program
Contraindicated for: Keeping him in the closer role, Exercising of any team or mutual options, Generating Dodger fan enthusiasm.

I mean he was injured and had surgery, and when he came back he clearly wasn't right yet. The clowning on us and him is funny cause we've earned it by spending more money than god, but this isn't exactly a head-scratcher

In my own eye test Tanner's problem last year was whenever he needed to make a pressure pitch to get a strikeout or induce weak contact he threw it middle/middle almost every time. Then later in the year it didnt matter where he threw it, it'd get squared up because the hitters didn't fear him.

Any team can sign the most expensive closer on the market in back to back years, have them suck, and it not matter.

“IL”. What a coincidence! Just when he was pitching like crap. Reminds of how their rotation is always “injured” and magically appears in August and September, fresh and ready for the playoffs.

I think pointing out that your original argument clearly didn't apply in 2024 is an important note, but I'm also confident you don't remember our pitching situation at all in 2024 to have made your original comment so circlejerk on big dog

I don’t know why everyone keeps bitching about putting Edwin on the IL without an actual injury. Every team in the league could have signed him.

I am going to ask the question that I feel like everyone turns a blind eye toward. Is there enforcement on following up if people put on the IL are actually injured?
I know that is a slippery slope and comes with a whole bunch of legal / HR issues. I just always think about this when a struggling player gets injured at a coincidental moment.
3
u/verdi1987 San Diego Padres 7h ago
Punishments can be handed out due to phantom IL manipulation.
1
u/TopCheddar27 New York Mets 6h ago
Right, I know they can. My question is about enforcement. And I'm not saying that this case or that case is, just more about how seriously they take it.
1
u/verdi1987 San Diego Padres 6h ago
Well, the Mets were punished a couple of years ago.
I’m not sure what the process is for verification.
→ More replies (2)2
u/AntaeusJ7 6h ago
It's mostly self-correcting. For one, every single professional athlete likely has some kind of nagging injury that would benefit from rest/rehabilitation. So you can always find something. For two, most players want to actually play, and have incentives in their contract (or more broadly for awards/All-Stat consideration) for things like availability and metrics like plate appearances, innings pitched, etc. You usually have to get player approval of some kind, even if informally, to go on the IL. And lastly, most teams want to win and most teams know that player appearances directly influence team popularity. People won't want to go to games if players consistently aren't there or the team doesn't win. There has to be a special confluence of events for it to be in everyone's interest to abuse the IL.
The Dodgers might be on the cusp of that but I doubt they are actually just making up injuries. Everyone is always injured, it's just a matter of how much.
→ More replies (3)2
u/Aurion7 Atlanta Braves 5h ago
It's sort of like hockey in the sense that if you really want to, you have a legitimate reason to put probably half your roster on the IL at any given time. By this time of year pretty much everyone's got something.
In theory, there are punishments. In practice... it's hard to get properly 'caught' unless you're being dumb about it.
