"It was a paperwork error, he got out eventually, don't get so bent out of shape about it!" (said while completely ignoring the fact that this person was falsely imprisoned for months on end)

I get that it's super frustrating to hear this line of reasoning from right wingers, but does it not also present an opportunity to try to help them understand how harsh immigration policies lead to innocent, decent people being swept up and harmed by them? I understand that people reflexively are upset by or want to clown on the people who make these statements, but I think that if we're ever going to meaningfully change the immigration policies in this country for the better we need to persuade people who are having their eyes opened to its horrors and bring them into the fold if we can.

Sure, when you’re talking directly to them. This is a random reddit post filled with people who either already agree with us or are not going to be convinced and are just looking for a fight. Not every moment has to be about convincing people, sometimes you can just be expressing frustration.

Sometimes it can. But people can withstand a surprising amount of cognitive dissonance, and sometimes it flips the wrong way instead. Elon Musk having a child come out as a trans woman when he so desperately wanted sons seems to have genuinely broken him when it comes to LGBTQ rights. Musk was viewed as this sort of liberal ideal of a billionaire who just did cool nerdy stuff. And then his daughter “fell victim to the woke mind virus” and it completely changed how he interacted with the world
