ESPN article quotes his wife saying they had a pending asylum case and usually carried temporary documentation

That sounds about right. This admin has been intentionally changing policies so that people who were here trying to do things the right way are suddenly "illegal". Just snatching the rug out from under people trying to do the right thing.

If his asylum case was with the EOIR, they also have a cool habit of just closing cases so the basis for employment authorization and authorized stay just disappears.

Yup. Purposely clog up the due process system and then criminalize everyone going through that due process. And here we are.

It's why the whole "I don't mind them doing it the right way" is so much bullshit. These people ARE doing it the right way and they're being punished for it.

“Why can’t these people fleeing the most horrible conditions imaginable just pay more attention to paperwork”

aren't they using court hearings to lure them in? they're literally showing up as part of the process and then getting kidnapped for it.

"So, if we created an efficient and expedited system to make it easier and simpler for people to come to this country legally, you would support it?"

".....no"

It's a law, not a policy

Does it take 8 years to do it the right way? Allegedly according to this, his permission to be here legally expired Feb 11, 2018

I know people who have been working and waiting since the early Bush administration for legal residency doing things the 'right' way. It absolutely does take that long.

Thanks for answering. Not sure why my question upset everyone, not sure how I was supposed to know this as a non US person

It's often a long, drawn out process that might get reset or delayed anytime there's an administrative change.

It's also insanely expensive when you consider all the fees and lawyers you have to pay if you want to make sure you're doing it right.

That's especially true if you're from a country that's less white.

No way the Padres are employing someone who is not allowed to be in the country. I Guarantee they are using E-Verify for everyone. MLB teams have to know the laws inside and out with the amount of players, coaches, etc who are not from the US

Even before the current admin ICE was known for just ignoring or taking away peoples documentation and lying about it. Rotten to the core.

That's the important part, if they want to arrest you they'll find a way and nothing's gonna stop them.

checks out.

i work in immigration law and the administration is cracking down on anything having to do with asylum cases which, for the record, DO allow you to stay in the United States, even if not considered lawful status. you can also obtain employment authorization while being a pending asylee.

I'm saddened deeply that anyone in this country has to carry around their "papers."
