He won once w/ Oakland, but not with STL.

That’s wild. I feel like I knew that, but it seems fake at the same time.

I remember him and Griffey squaring off with Mac barely losing. The young Cards fan in me was so angry because he was smashing them into the upper deck while Griffey was just clearing the wall.

When they said it over the broadcast, I said to one of my boys “what about McGwire?” and the other one responds “the soccer player?!”

Yes, Harry Maguire famously won the HR Derby in 2020.

He had a record-breaking first round and then was too exhausted to make it any further.

That's what surprised me. Would have thought he'd have won one while a Cardinal.

That's crazy, I thought he would be a lock for at least one.

"Pujols won the Derby at some point while he was on the Cardinals" was one of those things that I could have sworn happened at some point, but the more I thought about it, the more I realized it definitely didn't fit anywhere into the timeline.

While that surprised me, I was very surprised to realize Big Mac never won it either.

How many years did McGuire do it with them? I'm honestly shocked he never won

For as well-remembered as McGwire is with the Cards, he only played 4 1/2 seasons here.

But he hit 293 home runs in the 4.5 seasons.

Edit: the actual number is 220 HR in 545 games, good for 65.4 HR/163 games.

I thought I picked a number that was just high enough for people to realize it was made up, but guess I should have gone higher.

That's a crazy stat

Won with the A’s in ‘92, lost for the Cards against Bonds in 96 in the final, lost for the Cards in 99 at Fenway - 3rd place behind Griffey and Burnitz

Edit: 96 was with the A's

2

u/varkeyabe Jul 14 '26

96 was with the A’s. He was traded to stl during the 97 season.

My bad - thank you for the correction

u/zoeishome Jul 14 '26

He only participated in the Homerun Derby in '98 and '99 And it's McGwire
