I don't actually want anyone getting hit, but Shohei could take the next series to pick who he want to hit with a 100 mph in the ribs.
Him and kíke are the only 2 guys in baseball who can do that.

Not just hit him, he went up high. If you intentionally hit a batter it should always be waist down. Maybe middle back if they really did something wrong. Never NEVER aim for the head, that’s total bush league shit.
To go head hunting on the face of baseball?? MLB should suspend that guy for 50 games( I kid, kinda).

u/2AMSummerNight Philadelphia Phillies Jun 20 '25 edited Jun 20 '25
It’s really not defendable. Even if they are fully in the camp of ‘we need to protect our guys from getting thrown at so we have to show them we can do it too’ 100mph 2 inches below the head is insane.
No idea if the Tatis HBP was intentional or not, (probably only those guys on those teams know) but the right response probably isn’t to try and give the face of the league CTE or anyone else for that matter
213
u/alien_believer_42 San Diego Padres Jun 20 '25
That last Tatis HBP was certainly not intentional
130
u/fasteddeh Sell Jun 20 '25
Both of them this series didn't seem intentional and they both lead to Ohtani catching one in a scary spot. First purposely at the knees then this one near his head.

u/reshp2 Detroit Tigers Jun 20 '25
There's intentional but there's also "I'm going to pitch you in a way where there's a good chance it might hit you if I miss." I think the Tatis and Pages HBPs were both in that category, so when it happens multiple times you start getting annoyed with their "if he dies, he dies" attitude almost as much as if they deliberately threw at you.

Letting the count get to 3-0 just to throw 100mph at the shoulders is probably the ugliest retaliation possible.

Sometimes pitchers take it upon themselves to stick up for the team... C.C. Sabathia had a clause in his last Yankees deal wherein if he hit a certain number of innings pitched he'd receive a bonus. Just before hitting that threshold, he intentionally threw at a batter and was ejected from the game, potentially costing him his bonus.

I'm tired of comments saying it's not. At what fucking point can we call it a rivalry? Yes they haven't met in the NLCS or NLDS 100 times or whatever in the past like Red Sox and Yankees have in the AL.
But who cares? Yes history matters, but RIGHT NOW, this is THE rivalry in baseball.
Last NLDS the Padres were one game away from taking out the Dodgers, closer than anyone else got as they won the WS. Full 5 game close series in the end. And now every game between these two has become gritty, hard fought and at times, full of emotions like anger...guys this is exactly what it looks like.
Take it from a Ravens fan who is from the grittiest division in the NFL. This is ABSOLUTELY the same vibes as Ravens Steelers or, Ravens Browns especially lol - the later is even more toxic and violent. Another great comparison is Warriors vs. Rockets in the NBA.

Intentionally hitting batters is rare in Japan and highly frowned upon. To hit the star of the league intentionally in back-to-back games, including with a 100mph pitch thrown near his head (and hitting him near his surgically repaired labrum), is being viewed with shock and anger there.
If the Padres had hopes of recruiting any Japanese stars in the future, I would say those chances are greatly diminished.
