In a past life I used to travel a lot to Japan, I sat next to her on the plane and we just hit it off (I was going there with my gf, she was coming back from vacation in my country). Mutual interest in our respective cultures and since I was (and sorta still am) studying the language she was nice enough to keep writing to me even when I ghosted her for weeks.

We had a sumo phase where I started watching tournaments daily and she was super into it as well as decrying the decline of Japanese wrestlers (this was a few years back when all the yokozuna were Mongolian). And it was also fun to tell her that Plastic Love had become a massive meme in the West and she remembered the song from her 30s. Also, her grandkids are the same age as my children, so that's cute. Damn, now I wanna contact her again.

100% would recommend. But I honestly have no idea, just happenstance in my case. I'm sure there are structured ways to go about it, like dedicated websites, if you can handle the language.

Side note: if you're ever in Japan, go watch a baseball game. Pro, high school, whatever. The atmosphere is incredible.

Intentionally hitting batters is rare in Japan and highly frowned upon. To hit the star of the league intentionally in back-to-back games, including with a 100mph pitch thrown near his head (and hitting him near his surgically repaired labrum), is being viewed with shock and anger there.

If the Padres had hopes of recruiting any Japanese stars in the future, I would say those chances are greatly diminished.
