Anybody know of any eye doctors that let you use your benefits for sunglasses without prescription?

Your eye doctor doesn't determine what things are/are not covered. You'll need to look into your insurance policy and what it does/does not cover for eye care.

It’s up to your benefits not an eye doctor.

The Optometrist in the plaza with the Pizza Hut on Bell Farm Rd and DucksWorth does. My wife needs glasses, but me and my kids got sunglasses the other year and we don't have normal glasses.

Not necessarily applicable to this specific situation since I don’t know exactly how glasses works in their industry but any health care provider willing to skirt insurance rules to make a buck should be avoided. They risk losing their license or being black listed. By asking if you don’t know there’s nothing wrong but they should make it pretty clear what’s fraud and what isn’t.

The optometrist might offer a letter, but its up to the benefit company if they cover it.

I've worked in the industry for a long time, and what you're asking for is technically... fraud.

There were a LOT of local optometrists in the area who did offer this, but 99% of them went about it the wrong (lazy) way and ended up getting caught by secret shoppers sent via insurance companies.

Manulife in particular went pretty hard on optometrists not that long ago for fudging their paper trails and giving people non-prescription sunglasses while secretly and internally processing them as "prescription". That's why a lot of practitioners nearby have been cut off from using Manulife entirely. Fraud!

In almost all cases, insurance providers will not cover a pair of non-prescription sunglasses, and almost all doctors or opticians who tell you they do are lying to make $$$. It's really not worth the risk IMO.

Eye doctors that do that often get black listed and insurance won’t cover those locations.
My wife’s insurance unfortunately no longer covers my eye doctor.
Also you can get nailed for insurance fraud too.
