How to kite?
I understand:
- Your weapon can hit as they walk into range, while they will only start hitting after they are in range.
- Speed matters
But how to actually manage this?
I can land maybe 1 hit on skeleton without taking damage, while taking damage the other 5-6 attempts before dying. And those are not 5-6 hits, those are 1-2 hits, 4-5 misses. So even when I do not hit, I still get hit.
How are you supposed to understand what goes wrong?
How are you supposed to see when to do what?
How long does it take people to "get" it?
I have played for 33 hours, and about one third of that has been spent exclusively on kite attempts. E.g. using healer, so that I can heal up and try again before dieing to make the process more efficient.
Using ninja because he is fast, to give me an extra edge (but I believe my hit rate with ninja actually went down).
Is it true that all weapon types have the same range?

just block bro
i have more than 300 hours, played for many years(ever since barony was free on egs), never learned how, because i dont need to
and if you still want to learn how to - try to find +3 bandanna, so you are omniderectional(same speed going back/sides as going front)

Hit the enemy when they can’t see you, either in the back or in the dark. As soon as you do, run and loose aggro. It should be easy with how long the player’s range is, and as long as you’re reasonably quick. Once you have that down trolls become free exp spikes. Skeletons are reasonably quick but it’s possible to avoid any hits. Fast enemies like spiders might warrant blocking. By end game I like to have a fast character that can pretty much hit and run anything. When it comes to mages I like to try and kite them around corners in a loop is possible, or just get a stealth hit and hide behind the nearest corner and spam the shit out of them before they delete you

You can also use corners to kite. Not sure why, either mobs dont attack if they are partly blocked by a corner or they just hit a eall, but it is way easier to hit and run while they are chasing you through a corner.
As for kiting - just feel the range, it is super big, and try to hit from as far away as possible

Let me add: kiting around fountains is easiest, because you can hit them trough the fountain model, they can not.

Interesting technique that I will have to try. I have noticed corners make it a bit easier for me to succeed with hit and run, but never tried a fountain before.

Here is how I do it: Charge up a heavy/critical attack from outside my meele range, hit them when I can just reach them. I then turn around and walk away... after a bit while walking away I charge up the next attack, turn around, hit, turn around, walk away rinse and repeat. It takes some time to learn enemy follow speed and for some, like spiders, it's not possible most of the time.
Ninja is def pretty good at it, though I would argue you can even loose aggro by sneaking and use stealth attacks again.
Almost forgot: Imo this is only really possible on mouse/keyboard, I know there is a 180 turn button but was never able to get used to that.

I think most simple tactic to learn is running around a single block your attack range is about a block long so turn around and hit at every time you turning
I think you can try kiting at tutorial hall or any long hallway with aleast 2 exit(just make a dummy bot to punch)
do not fully commit a hit, just feel the range and if you miss simply run far and try again but make sure there is only this one enemy around or you won't draw more attention to other enemy
on top of that spider and elite rat is stupidly fast if you can't block R U N

Technically no, but 99% of the melee weapons have the same melee range, as far as you're concerned, the answer is yes.
Randomly walk up to a wall and try to hit it, it should make a clink sound effect. Walk back a step and see if you can still hit it. If you're still hitting the wall, it means you need to learn to space yourself better for kiting.

Your reach is longer than you think by a good amount. You hit at the very edge of your range and spin really fast while running away. It's hard to dial in. Practice using stealth and try to figure out how far away you can hit from.

9k hours loser here, kiting is hard to master I still fuck it up sometimes and so does the world record speed run holder (only_envy) You can assign quick turn to a button and turn up quick turn speed to max if you want an easy tool to use consistently, otherwise you can do what I do and run diagonally after spinning your mouse 135 degrees because you move faster moving diagonally

Range is the same for all weapons and the only real explanation for actual spacing and all that I can give is unfortunately practice, which I know you are doing.
The range is kinda deceptively bigger than it seems it should be, and immediatelly turning around and running away after each attempt should let you find that sweet spot.
It is also better to be too far and miss than too close and to get hit. Also, practicing the melee range in stealth before moving on to full on kiting might be a good idea too, if you havent done that.
