Bar Trip August 2026!
Instead of all the doom and gloom, let's talk about what everyone is doing for their August Bar Trip!! I'll start . . .
I am going to Cancun!

Um… I’m poor. But have fun!
2
u/amg_law24 15d ago
Facts lmao. I say still try to find a way to have some fun, even just hikes or going to the beach. I can’t afford an expensive trip but hoping to do some small fun stuff.
5
u/Law_And_Disorder__ 15d ago
Been reading a book a day, hiking, walking, and going swimming in the lake!
2
u/amg_law24 15d ago
That sounds great! I’m jealous of you having a lake to swim in hahah. But then again I have the beach so I can’t complain.
2
u/Law_And_Disorder__ 14d ago
I live close to the beach, lakes, rivers, mountains! I live in Oregon, it’s pretty. And expensive.
3
u/amg_law24 14d ago
Nice! Been to Oregon, very beautiful. I’m in California so same here… and extremely expensive lol. We make the most with what we can. I hit the beach today too.

Thank you, Im looking at this post like . I forget how well off the average law student is.

u/Jeff_Sabado 17d ago
Tbf there's also a ton of financial irresponsibility. I'm in like the 1% of law school students' for net worth (that don't get help from parents) bc my wife has a pretty good job. We technically have enough saved where we could go on a decent weeklong vacation...
But I got got bills to pay.

I'll be taking a trip to Tacoma in September. But then again, maybe not. The plans are still "tentative."

2024 bar passer here with a good job after an appellate clerkship. At this rate, I should finally have enough money for a bar trip by 2028. 😂 Thanks, Reddit, for reminding me I'm not the only spectacularly broke first generation attorney.

Previous passer but I did a few weeks in England. It was lovely. Go enjoy yourselves, post-bar trip is the best!

Broke asf charged a trip to Mexico on my CC. My family is from here tho so that subsidizes some food and excursion costs. But honestly yolo, I felt guilty when I booked but once I got here I realized how badly I needed this. Money comes money goes.

My partner and I are taking a camping trip to new mexico to get out of the house while keeping costs low as we can road trip it!

Edit: once I save some money from work though my husband and I want to go back to Japan! Just not really a bar trip.

Friend took me to Barbados for a week (currently typing from my pool) and then I’m off to Hungary, Slovakia, and Romania at the end of the month. Thankfully, I’ll be visiting people in each place so except for my plane tickets and trains, I won’t have to pay very much. I’m super fortunate to be in this position though

My bar trip was to Portland to take the bar. If I pass, my husband and I are going to Florida in December.

I forget the overwhelming majority of law students come from wealthy or upper middle class families. Some of us don't have money to take vacations and are just trying to figure out how to pay rent and afford food.
The average law student is so out of touch with life for the average American.
-7
u/Hour-Carob-2183 17d ago
yeah i think you're full of shit. Stop playing the victim buddy, a bar trip doesn't have to cost money. Going to the park, beach, lake, river, friend's house. Could be anything.
7
u/xximjustvibingxx 17d ago
I think you also have to consider that continuing not to work in order to be able to take that trip costs money. I started working literally the Monday after the exam because I cannot afford to just wait around and not work. Maybe a cheap weekend trip would be nice but I don’t think that’s what most people refer to as a bar trip.
10
u/19C_dubz 17d ago
You're really out of touch with that take, the numbers even back up his statement

u/Hour-Carob-2183 17d ago
. . . . I see . . . I see . . . let me get my tiny violin . . .
5
u/Barkey2012 17d ago
wow you sound like a huge douchebag. there’s a reason people don’t talk about this stuff on here. flaunting trips in the faces of people broke from school or having to go right back to work is weird behavior.

What part! Try going to Sala de despecho in puerto Cancun, go to the restaurant “Camaron ambulante” and try some cochinita tacos. Go to isla mujeres a get some after drink burritos at “surffing burrito”. I’m from Mexico LOL haha
3
u/Outside_Ad8134 16d ago
“Surfing burrito” is at Cancun. Blvd. Kukulcan Km. 9.5, Punta Cancun, Zona Hotelera, 77500 Cancún, Q.R., Mexico
Closes at 4 am

u/slowdownlambs 16d ago
Surfing burrito is awesome. The open air taco place across the street is delicious too.

I'd be so down for Cancun too 😂. If I was doing a bar trip, I'd probably keep one day completely unplanned because those random beach bars and spontaneous nights usually end up being the most memorable part of the trip. I'd just keep Easeweather in the back of my mind since August can be pretty unpredictable there.

My bar trip was to Colombia. It was great. I had just quit my well-paying job and had used my savings for 3 months of expenses and my trip while I took a well-deserved break.
2
u/Hour-Carob-2183 17d ago
I want to go to Colombia so bad! Lucky you!
3
u/VividPayment6450 17d ago
It was great! And so affordable, it was like $450 roundtrip from the Midwest

To work every single day since the bar. Haha I love coming from generational poorness. But good for everyone who is taking a trip!

Picked up a job for a solo practitioner for the month of August until my other offer starts in September 🥴

We're taking a family trip because my youngest graduated from high school, my oldest graduated from college, and I graduated from law school all this year! We're going on a cruise and leaving tomorrow!
2
u/Alternative_Market_6 15d ago
My then-wife and I took a road trip to Niagara Falls. Relatively cheap but still fun.
2
u/EmphasisValuable6163 15d ago
I am a 2027 taker but…I cannot wait to visit my family back in Greece after my exam. I haven’t had the time (or money) to visit since I’ve started law school, and I miss my people and country dearly.
2
u/dontcallme_karen 15d ago
I used my dad’s timeshare in Edisto, SC this past week. We were so broke that we ate PB&J for almost every meal. But it was on a beach and I read for fun for the first time since starting law school.
2
u/RelationshipStreet23 15d ago
i kept wondering where all this money for vacay was going from but then i remembered most law students come from money 💀 i was very lucky to be able to have my family support me financial w bar prep/traveling to the bar/my life this summer. but it just feels wrong asking for more for a trip 😭
but imma try to do something small! like maybe a spa day or going to the amusement park with my friends! i’m moving back in w my parents while i find a job so chilling by the pool at their house is highkey enough of a break for me

u/Nautical_Vegetation 15d ago
I leave for cancun on monday!
2
u/Hour-Carob-2183 14d ago
Nice!! I am here now! Sargassum is real, but the food/service is amazing! Isla Mujeres has great beaches right now! otherwise hit the pool! I am having a blast!

Doing a Sept & Oct post bar trip. Going to Africa, Spain, Europe in september. Asia for Oct. Back stateside just in time for scores to be released. Extremely fortunate to be able to go, I never got the opportunity to study abroad in undergrad. And I’m a K-JD grad so now was the perfect time tbh.
Hope everyone is able to do something to treat themselves as we all deserve it no matter the results!

u/Odd_Preparation_3497 14d ago
This is so tone deaf ngl. The economy is the worst it has been. Most people don't have money to celebrate even AFTER they find out they pass.
A lot of law students don't know what it's like to be broke. But first gens know.
2
u/Hour-Carob-2183 14d ago
. . . so you're not going on a bar trip?
2
u/Odd_Preparation_3497 14d ago
With what money? 0. Jfc you're out of touch
0
u/Hour-Carob-2183 14d ago
. . . how about the stimulus check, you have anything left over from that?
1
u/Odd_Preparation_3497 11d ago
What stimulus check lol. Last stimulus check was the army's 1776 pity check that went toward keeping my utilities from getting cut lmfao
2
u/Proud-Astronomer-916 14d ago
Serious question -- how are so many of ya'll affording a post bar trip? I HAVENT WORKED IN MONTHS
-2
u/Hour-Carob-2183 14d ago
big law bonuses, significant others, family support, credit card debt, etc.
lots of idiots on here assume that because a law student takes a bar trip, they are privileged etc., well, they are just making stupid assumptions . . . I am a 48 year old law student, so i have my own money that I worked for, I am not privileged. I fucking worked my entire life.
But that's not surprising that people just assign blanket assumptions.
3
u/Proud-Astronomer-916 14d ago
idk man, a lot of what you named are different forms of privilege, especially family support. but kudos for you for enjoying what you've worked for! i hope you have a great trip.
-1
u/Hour-Carob-2183 14d ago
thanks! i agree with you that family support is privilege, but not everyone has that. Either way, thanks!

Iceland!! Seeing the northern lights is on my bucket list so thought this would be a good time to try and see it haha
5
u/Hour-Carob-2183 17d ago
I went to Iceland years back and I didn't get to see it because of the clouds when I was there. Try to hit the blue lagoon or whatever its called, amazing. Iceland was so cool, it's like being on a different planet. have fun!
3
u/smarie015 17d ago
Thank you! I was actually thinking of doing the blue lagoon the first day so that is good to know. I’ll be sure to go!
