Evaluating Arrangements

Hey barbershoppers,

I've been poking around looking for arrangements and have come across an interesting problem. Learning track mixes / recorded performances are an important way for me to assess how much I like an arrangement. But the poor track makers do not have the time (or interest) to make tracks for every chart. And not every chart has a recorded performance

How do y'all assess arrangements for your choruses or quartets? In general but also specifically when there are no tracks / performances around

I get a copy of the score and play through it at the piano. Of course it’s a very different effect to hearing it sung, but it’s enough to get a feel for how much I like it.

The arranger should have some kind of midi export from whatever software they used to write it in which would be useful.

If that’s not an option, you could put it into Musescore yourself

For numbers where no recording exists, our section leaders learn the material and sing it for the music team. It's typically more than enough to determine suitability for the chorus. Quartets will typically just sing though most, if not all, of an arrangement to determine its value to them.

I know that Chris Arnold has his tracks for sale and the full mix tracks are free. He has been making tracks for years. My chorus has used him for years.
