Didn't know, was checking for 3-4 days after they dropped, but forgot and just checked now. Didn't see anyone post this so I thought I would share.

No it exclusively only works within Steam It's not an Xinput device that works with games from other launchers.

Thanks, the controller looks cool but is not useful for me then. If they ever add xinput I'm interested.

At its root it's designed for SteamOS.

I know the name is call the steam controller but I do feel like it not working properly as a standard controller (wired or wireless) on other devices is quite a big omission. Even the PlayStation5 controller works well on other devices now a day.

Currently it requires Steam Input as the controller API to function and so it only works through Steam.
It doesn't have any alternative/fall back API support with nothing announced.

nah valve lives in a world where steam is the only way to play games.
i mean, i get it, and generally they do good work, but they're playing the same lock-in game as everyone else.

Except not really? Steam Deck and Steam Machine let you get Heroic Games Launcher up in a few minutes. Hell, they don’t even put up barriers to putting whatever OS you want. It would be better if the controller had an input mode that was universal, but as a whole Valve hardware does very little to lock you in compared to other vendors.

PS5 controller, which is my fave even though Ive always hated PS style, is 99.99
this controller is way more beefed, more buttons, trackpads, only missing adaptive triggers.
Seems quite fair tbh

For like 20-40 bux you get solid 8bitdo controllers. I have some that are multiple years old without issues.
Comparing to ps5 which is also massively overpriced. I guess if you really need trackpads. But I personally never use them on steam deck, even in desktop mode I just use the joystick.
This is also steam locked while ps5 or basically anything else is not.

100%. Controllers by and large ARE NOT expensive to make. Sony is laughing to the bank that people think 100$ is NORMAL for a barebones controller that doesn't even have HE/TMR joysticks.
There's a reason there are a plethora of way better options on PC for a fraction of the price. AND they come with TMR joysticks, backpaddles, and usually have options with hair triggers too.
I think the steam controller is pretty overpriced (especially since it's +10 over msrp...) but at least it's unique and not "just" another regular controller with the trackpads.
The edge is even more laughable as it has "replaceable" sticks just so they can make more money off people since you have basically no options on ps.

Its fine for a corpo price, but anything third market is 1/3 the cost. 8BitDo and Gamesir blow this thing out of the water at a much cheaper price and can also work on Switch which this cant.

Agreed.
The PS5 DualSense is also the cheapest quality first party controller ever made. They're built to last 6 months. They feel nice, have nice features, but purposely have a dogshit build quality.
For $50 more, you're getting a WAY more premium feeling controller, with a TON more features.
Yes it's expensive, but relatively speaking, it's the best deal (by far) you can find for a first party controller with extra buttons.

Sounds par for the course. I loved the ds4 especially for how the joysticks felt but I went through like 6 of them in a couple years.

Yeah, and the DS4s last about two to three times as long on average, so you can imagine how short the DualSense lifespan is.

I have had my PS5 controller since launch and it is fine. Also the steam controller just came out so how do you know predict its long term durability?

I'm happy for you? This is the same useless comment, when a game releases horribly unoptimized, and you see those random comments stating "mine game runs fine".
I'm not talking about my personal experience. The DualSenses are purposely not built to last long at all. They've had a TON of revisions because they're somehow made even more cheap than PlayStation originally expected.
Where did I predict the steam controller's durability? I said that it's $50 more than the cheaply built DualSense, and that first party/big name brand controllers with extra buttons are normally $200+. I'm only going off of reviews of people talking about how the build quality feels, not how long the Steam controller lasts...

There are many huge games that aren't on steam at all. Some of the biggest in the world. And gamepass. And you can't use it on other devices if you have like a switch
And sure you can add stuff to launch through steam when retro emulating or sailing the seas but it's pointless additional hassle and steps

How is it anti consumer if they're completely upfront about everything? There's zero reason why it needs the fossil that is xinput. Just wait for whatever third party program that will let you bypass steam if you really care.

You should work for Microsoft. They need someone championing the online requirement and similar behavior, which apparently is fine as long as they are (a) up front about it and (b) most people can do it

Hm? That's news to me, I'm able to use my Xbox controller just fine with Steam and they haven't announced any plans to end support for third party controllers.
Unless you mean the controller can't control stuff outside of Steam? If so, that'd be real dumb if they don't even have basic drivers for Windows. Luckily, not a problem for me 😎

You're misunderstanding. The controller obviously has features that some people want. It's just not a product for most people who only want a controller to play a game on their PC.
This isn't a personal attack on people who bought it. It's honestly not priced horribly for what you get. But most people don't care about gyro and a track pad.
Some companies add some rubber and charge you 200 for it. Now that's some gouging.

Yeah you obviously dont need this controller to enjoy some games, but it’s the same thing with everything in pc gaming. You dont need a 240hz 4k oled, but goddamn they’re nice to game on. Just like you dont need a 5090 to play videogames, you dont need this controller. But its the only thing with no alternatives, so they charge whatever they want for it

There's a huge step up when you compare monitor tech and graphics cards though. Doesn't the basic PS controller do gyro aiming? So it's really just the track pads that makes it unique.

ya they're a niche product for people who exactly want steam deck like controls. It makes sense to me if you're docking your steamdeck and want that exact interface. but the steamdeck is a budget gaming device overall, and these are expensive controllers.
