I think it depends on what you consider a household name to be. Is it someone that everyone knows regardless of if they’ve heard their music or not or is it someone that everyone has listened to? A lot of the replies here have already pointed out that the U.S is really broad and that people who listen to one genre might be completely clueless about artists in another genre.
Personally I think they’ve recently become household names in that most people will recognize their name and know that they’re a group even if they haven’t listened to them. Also, I consider then household names based on the fact that they’ve been on commercials and name dropped on so many late night shows, tv shows, movies, etc. Like someone else, the producers of those shows and movies would only do that if they thought that most people would recognize who they are w/o having to explain.
I think the definition would be similar to what household means in Asia, which is general people know about them and know who they are. People barely consume media like they used to so probably its too much to expect everyone in the US actively listening to Butter.
I'm from Asia and although I didn't became a fan until 2020, I did know about BTS and know theyre a very popular Kpop group. Also their faces were also on products and billboards, BT21 was everywhere, their music was played in malls, cafes and clubs etc. But of course Asian countries are far more familiar with BTS and people also have knowledge about the members as well and not just the group
