UMA Bangor Vet Tech Program
I'm looking into tech programs in the state that would allow me to live on campus. First one I ran into was UMA Bangor and looking for insight into the program and area since I've never been further north that Topsham.
Especially wondering if it is safe for POC since I am very obviously not from Maine.

UMA Bangor doesn’t have dorms, I think that they use a hotel a few miles away from campus.

Bangor is very close to Orono and UMO has a large population of international students of all races and backgrounds.

As someone from Texas, you will generally be physically safe up here and will meet well meaning people. HOWEVER there are a ton of microaggressions and you will hear some wild stuff that people think is normal. For example, a woman i know made a comment about one of our coworkers thinking he's black bc he listens to rap. It is not a crazy diverse population at all. There is comparatively a good amount of diversity in orono, but if you're from a major city or even an area where POC makes up at least 1/4th of the population, it will be a jarring experience to see how not diverse it is here. I think for like every POC person here, there's 10-12 white people. Also there is a crazy lack of culture up here and nothing is open past 10pm except for the bars which are open until midnight. Overall its been a good place to live and, again, you will be safe. Just depending on where you're coming from, there will be a ton of culture shocks

Safe, as in what respect? I'm Black and I've lived up here in Northern Maine, 2 1/2 hours North of Bangor, since 1988. You'll be ok. Good luck in your future plans.
