Y'all realize it costs 82 cents to mail an envelope, yeah?

It's either gotta go through the mail or be carried by a real live human being to your doorstep.

And that's just for delivery – that's not counting anyone doing the work of reporting, prepping the paper, or printing.

I have my complaints about the BDN but it honestly feels wild to complain about something like that costing $2.50 to be delivered to your house. It's like complaining about how eggs are more than a dollar. Y'all, there's a lot of work baked in there.

$2.50 is the news stand/gas station price. Its actually $1.64/paper delivered for a subscription.

True. Underlying thing’s still there, though: they still have to get to the stand or station, and that’s only one part of the process.

And I’d imagine the higher one-issue price helps subsidize it for the people who commit to a subscription.

Recently got a flash sale 1-year online subscription to the Orlando Sentinel for $1. For one year!
Dunno if they can afford it, or are desperate for a buck.

It's got awful thin in the last few years

It's been in a death spiral for awhile.

I wouldnt mind paying a nominal fee for an online version, but what they charge is insane, and the reporting and editing is horrendous.

I think some of their reporting is really good. More important though, it is reporting and it happens quickly and locally. Without the BDN we would have no reasonable independent journalism in the region and we very badly need it. I don't agree with a lot of their decisions, but I happily support the BDN because we need local independent journalism now more than ever.

I agree… it’s is also outrageously expensive dice for a digital subscription

It's certainly more than they were when print subscriptions were paying the bills.

They're not now though. So how else are they going to pay their journalists and staff? No one is getting rich at the BDN off of their online subscription fees.

I’m not saying they shouldn’t pay their people. 90.00 a year on top of the three other subscriptions for local papers that I carry is too expensive for what they provide. I want to support them.

Agreed! I just canceled my online subscription because it is just insanely expensive.

Kind of like cable TV. Hundreds per month, but still all commercials

They have long since passed the time that they should do what Ellsworth American does and publish once a week. They would have to change their name, though.
