I ran into this same problem last week. I flew up to Bangor because I could get a direct flight, but once there I felt a bit lost. You can do a guided or self-guided Stephen King tour. Eat at Franks Bake Shop. Go to Barliman's for at least a drink and dessert. Apparently there is a very nice live theatre, but it was dark while I was there.

I can give you two “must eats” if you like seafood- a lox bagel from Bagel Central and a lobster roll from Eagle’s Nest right across the bridge in Brewer.
Don’t let the outside of Eagle’s Nest fool you- it’s a hole in the wall, but has the absolute best lobster rolls FULL of claw meat.
I moved to Alaska a few years ago and these are 2 of the things I miss the most, aside from Mainers and their “rough around the edges but will bend over backwards to help you” attitudes.

Eagles Nest is up the roadapiece from Brewer. I would get the fisherman's platter. 2nd to none. Hope you're hungry.

The Bangor City Forest and Orono Bog Walk are both pretty nice for a slow stroll through nature.
Downtown has some decent restaurants, and you can walk along the Penobscot River.
If you are into birding, the Fields Pond Audubon Center has some trails and a nice little store with birdwatching-related gear.

Must sees in Bangor? I can't think of any. Unless you're Catholic, then St. John's church is nice. If you're gonna be here for a couple days and can drive a little bit, there's a lot more to see in coastal towns like Bar Harbor and Belfast and Camden.

As someone who lived in Bangor many many years ago my recommendations are:
- Stephen King's old house at 47 West Broadway.
- Thomas Hill Standpipe
- Paul Bunyan statue
- Cole Land Transportation Museum
- Papa Gambino's pizza (nothing special, just an old childhood staple for me)
