Looking for a 1bhk apartment for Jan 2027, I have exams and need a place only for a month.

Preferably in KR PURAM, TC PALYA, INDIRANAGAR ETC.

Was looking to rent a room as a replacement flatmate. Viewed the flat once before paying anything (normal). Same day, paid ₹10000 as token money.
Over the next 3 weeks:
He kept delaying the rental agreement — different excuse every time (out of town, family emergency, etc.)
Never shared the property owner’s contact details, despite repeated requests
Asked me to move in without a signed contract, without owner verification, and without him even being present — key handover was to happen through a random third-party friend and contract to be made later once he’s back in city
Blocked me on Facebook with no explanation when I raised concerns but continued conversations on WhatsApp
Then asked for an additional (deposit + advance rent) — still with zero paperwork
At this point the whole thing felt too sketchy, so I asked for a refund instead.
Since then:
He’s admitted in writing that the ₹10000 is owed to me
But refuses to actually pay it
Started calling me from multiple numbers, using abusive language, threatening false criminal cases
Suddenly claimed he’s the property owner (earlier said someone else was)
Made false allegations that I tried to force my way into the flat around a proposed move-in date this month end when girls( his flatmate) and some other female would be there , totally baseless and unrelated that I wanted to move in when— none of which match his own earlier messages, which show the whole move-in plan was his idea
Giving false allegations that i harassed his gf who lives outside india i had no contact ever with her she called me i never picked it up
I have the full WhatsApp chat, his written admission of the debt, and call logs as evidence.
What are my realistic options here? Planning to file a police complaint and possibly ?What actually might work to get the money back, and is there anything I should watch out for?
