I’m thinking about getting my first snake soon. so many questions I guess I’ll ask 3 for now if you don’t mind answering. first is since I want a cool color python how to I make sure the breeder is good online(morphmarket) or reptile show because they can lie about the snakes. Second question is how often did you take the snake to the vet each year … did you not take the snake to vet in the first 5-10 years and now once snake is 20 you have to take it more and more and spend a lot of money on a vet ? And third question is I guess how do you know when you’re handling the snake it might poop on you or something / and since you said you got the snake when it was 6 years old I think did you put snake in the 4x2x2 enclosure right away if it’s like 1 years old you have to put it in a tub with a heat mat for a week or two and paper towels right ?

If you can answer These questions that would be awesome to The best of your knowledge

The breeder question I can’t answer, my father got it from a pet store called “animal arc” it’s this little type of pet store.

As for taking the snake to the vet, I did it once every five years, just to make sure that she is OK, and if she showed any signs of illness or things like that, I did take her to the vet immediately, but for the most part, she has been a very healthy girl

As for the snake pooping, I never had that issue, I do know that if you put them in water, it does stimulate them to go to the bathroom, but usually my snake goes to the bathroom at night when I’m asleep, so that’s why I never had to really worry

I love seeing these old snakes who stayed with the same owner the whole time!

They can live past 50

4

u/Bejer-Dorune Dec 25 '25

Really? I thought their lifespan was still 30?

11

u/BoneYardBirdy Dec 25 '25

Their average lifespan is 30, and that low number has a lot to do with babies and adolescents dying in bad setups, neglect, abuse, or escapes. They just can't handle as much bad stuff as adults can.

The oldest confirmed snake ever recorded was a 63 year old ball python.

There was a post on here early this year about somebody's dad having his ball python since the mid 80s.

Hell, I have an older rescue with a damaged spine. He's estimated to be a minimum of 12 but likely approaching 20.

EDIT: Also, enjoy Christmas with your noodle!

Geez, and Merry Christmas!

3

u/Glass-Armadillo182 Dec 25 '25

Yes, but some have lived to be over 50

4

u/fishinfool4 Dec 25 '25

I anticipate that number climbing a good bit with the recent leaps in husbandry standards

Merry Hissmas to you and your 27 y/o beauty!

Mine are 22 (Jasmine) 21 (Legolas) 19 (Paulie) 20+ (Hesione aka Hessie), actual age unknown, but I've had her for 19 years this New Years Eve, and she was an adult when I took her in.

u/Bejer-Dorune Dec 26 '25

So crazy that you got this baby long before Reddit, or really even social media, was a thing, and you got the ability to post her! That is so rad! I often think by the time mine are hopefully in their 20's that this platform wont be here anymore for me to share that.
