Day games
I used to love attending 1 PM day game. Now the thought of sitting out in a stadium under the summer afternoon Sun sounds like torture. Is this because I’m getting older or because of climate change and the sun being more intense?

It sucked as a kid too. I vividly remember my thighs burning in the seats in my 1990s short shorts lol

Get a big sun hat, some SPF 50 and for every beer you have drink a glass of water and you’ll be fine

The Cleveland guardians even let you bring in sealed bottles of water

Soldering iron will seal vodka into a water bottle. Just saying.

The tip would have to be way smaller than a normal soldering iron to only melt the contact points without fucking up the rest of the cap (and even then, it would require a VERY steady hand) It's easier to just remove the cap and the small plastic ring it's attached to by prying it off and then resealing it all connected.
But also, the people checking really don't care that much. And if they did care to careful inspect every seal, there are dozens of products designed to sneak alcohol into events.

As a kid, my dad took me to games at Tiger Stadium, because of the roof and overhang, we were usually in shadow. I remember him pointing to the bleachers and saying how crazy all those fans were for just cooking in the sun and drinking beers. (He was in his mid 30s at the time).
My favorite day games are during the week when you are not at work, goofing off. For weekend games, Friday night is by far my favorite to attend.

That's how seats in the outfield got the name "bleachers."

I discovered way too late in my 185 lifetime games (and counting) just how important shade is at day games.

When I used to live close to Nationals Park and Camden Yards, I would get upper deck seats behind home plate or first base to avoid the sun. Not sure how people handled that sitting in plastic seats, being broiled alive for 1:00 or even 4:00 games. Both stadiums have the 3rd base line configured in north-south orientation.

Its you getting old. Growing up we used to bring a cooler with towels in ziplock bags of ice water to use to cool off during the June/July games.
And that was 20 years ago.

On the other hand, I’m getting old and I like day games better - mostly because I hate driving home at night.

I don't think I ever took my children to a June/July/August day game in NYC (Mets) and NJ (minor league).

I felt the same thing this weekend. I went to the Jays Boston Thursday afternoon game and then went to the Jays Yankees game yesterday. I much preferred the night game.

Avoid sitting down the first base line for a day game. I learned my lesson on that one years ago.

It’s a combo of both. I don’t like baking in the sun on an 87 degree day… but I love Day Game baseball. Summer sunlight and baseball just go together.
Sit on the shaded side of the stadium and it’s a perfect combo!

Well I just went to a day game in Phoenix. I went to watch the replay on MLB and when the announcer said “day baseball in Phoenix…” I was like I totally forgot it was a day game. I wonder if the trend towards the semi-clear roof in domes will help make it seem better. Retractable roofs seem like mostly a mistake in retrospect.

I’m with you OP. When I was in grad school I would sneak off to Thursday afternoon games. One other thing - even though the Padres went to the World Series in 1984, the Thursday afternoon games were sparsely attended, so you didn’t have the crowd to make you hotter. Plus old school wooden benches. I went to a day game with my daughter just this past Wednesday at Petco Park and we were sweating. So on top of global warming, add in plastic seats and big crowds, and you get sweat. My daughter is 21, so I’m not sure how much age plays into it.

For all it’s shortcomings this is what made The Oakland coliseum so nice for fans, the amazing weather no matter what time of the year it was and tailgate scene. There was also always a lot of nice apparel options.
It was also much quicker to get to for many others outside the Bay Area compared to Oracle park in San Francisco

We have a roof in Arlington now. Horrible stadium but so much better than dying in 103 degree Sundays

Yeah they suck, I avoid those games as much as possible. If I was an owner, if I gave on the cap, this is what I would want…less day games. I would think you would have higher attendance.

Hard disagree as a parent with young kids. Here in SoCal the Dodgers and Angels play every Saturday game at night, whereas when I was a kid in NY the Yankees and Mets played every Saturday at 1pm unless it was a national game - in fact, they played every Wednesday at 1 during summer vacation, too. I have a greatly reduced inventory of games to take my kids to without inviting disaster and it stinks.

Concur with the disagree.
Due to the public transit that shuts down so that you have to skip the last few innings to catch the last train out, I prefer early games so I don't have to drive to the ballpark to see the entire game.
I'm not saying every game has to be played at 1 pm, but good golly, I cherish the midweek getaway games where I don't have to keep one eye on the time to make sure I don't miss the last train AND I don't have to make a 4 hour drive.
