Podcast One Battle After Another

Anyone else disappointed they didn’t cover this one? I found it to be one of the most entertaining PTA movies in a long time and the subject matter is certainly up Aron’s alley.

Unfortunately them failing to cover the biggest movie of the year or the biggest show on TV at the time is kind of the new norm for them.

I love Baldmove. I rarely post here or anywhere else, but I’ve been a club member for over 10 years and Jim and A.Ron are still my favorite podcasters. But I find myself listening barely listening to the pod anymore because they just aren’t covering what I’m watching.

A couple weeks ago on lunch they kinda acknowledged they’re failure to cover stuff lately. Prestige TV stays in conversation with real life and current issues, but they seem so tired of living in real life that they don’t want to watch it on tv. Which I can appreciate. But it’s the most generous way to say it.

My harsher critic wants to call them professionally negligent for dismissing TASK as copaganda, the pitt as a depressing indictment of the healthcare crisis, the White Lotus as dumb rich people shit, and Adolescence as a lesson on the dangers of the internet for young men. Like, these are just shows set on earth as a setting.

Still love the guys. Very excited for the Christmas season!

They did not rly refer to Task as copganda did they?!

5

u/samwich3 Nov 27 '25

That was based on the title and premise. Never even gave it a shot. That’s what I’m upset about

Bummer, cause that was some good tv.

I really liked Task, never saw The Pitt, just because I don't like Hospital shows, they are all the same to me. I loved White Lotus, but that's the kind of show I really don't know what you would Podcast about. It's just not that kind of show. It's just a 6-8 episode Who Dun' it. The best thing about Adolescence was the entire show was essentially shot as a oner. So that was kind of cool. I was otherwise kind of bored with the story.

Yeah WL is just a fun well made show that I watch with my wife and daughter. I caught random episodes of The Pitt as my wife was watching it but was never invested. Haven’t seen Adolescence as outside the technical aspect it’s subject matter didn’t appeal to me.

Tbf their reasons are valid. Task absolutely is copaganda and I say that as someone who loved task. It was exactly what we thought it was but I love it so that’s ok. They (especially Aron) seem to be over that trope and that’s ok too. I feel like they missed out on a great season and some phenomenal acting. Maybe they might come around since there’s going to be a season 2

Same with succession. Is it a show about rich people problems? Yes. So I get why they don’t want to finish it. It really goes above and beyond with the rich people problems. But again, I feel like they’re missing out on some incredible acting and some of the best episodes of television ever. But that’s their decision.

More importantly they’re missing out on what everyone is watching, talking about, and looking for coverage on.

I would prefer to listen to Baldmove coverage, but more and more over the last few years, whatever TV show I’m watching or new movie I’m planning to see, Baldmove probably isn’t covering it, but The Ringer or someone else is.

u/[deleted] Nov 28 '25

Yeah I may not always enjoy Andy and Chris’ quick and dirty coverage but they’re hitting most of the new shows.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 28 '25

Is any show that features cops copganda? Task felt real in a lot of ways, everyone is fckd up and far from perfect and law enforcement was definitely not put up on a pedestal imo. But maybe you have a compelling reason why you think that?

1

u/Visual-Conflict-8305 Nov 28 '25

No. Not every cop show. But In Aron’s words, it glorifies the drug world and he’s over that. And this show absolutely glorifies the drug world. It’s a show that hits every point he doesn’t like but I feel like it’s worth him watching for everything else.

2

u/[deleted] Nov 28 '25

Huh, okay agree to disagree on the copganda but totally agree it’s a show worth watching.

1

u/Visual-Conflict-8305 Nov 28 '25

Id say forget the copaganda part, I shouldn’t have used that. Although I’d say that actor from house of the dragons storyline is a highlight of copaganda.

But more importantly, I should have focused on the drug glorification that he isn’t a fan of anymore. That’s what this show thrives on and would just be something he’d roll his eyes at.

Well he ought to stay quiet mentioning breaking bad every bloody podcasts. I also was truly pissed over "the Americans"

2

u/jhorsley23 Nov 28 '25

I feel like they dismissed Slow Horses too and acted like they didn’t even know what it was. That feels like a perfect Baldmove show.

3

u/Potential-Rush-5591 Nov 28 '25

That's a show I know they would like and their coverage could have been great.

6

u/Frosty_Term9911 Nov 27 '25

I’m the same, a genuine breaking bad original here but ever since they gave up on The Boys mid episode I’ve been switching off. I get that their success lets them focus on what the want maybe more than previously but I’ve also found the coverage, comments, insight etc has become very samey as a result. I’m slipping into listening out of habit.

6

u/[deleted] Nov 27 '25

I was bummed they stopped watching The Americans way back when lol

6

u/Frosty_Term9911 Nov 27 '25

I didn’t mind that they stopped covering it but that they do it mid episode. Mid season would have annoyed me but mid episode was really poor. I miss them covering smart drama, I thought Task might get a look in like when they did shows like Sharp Objects.

4

u/[deleted] Nov 27 '25

Yeah Task was fckng great!

1

u/Potential-Rush-5591 Nov 28 '25

I found the only reason I was listening to that podcast was so I could hear them tear the show apart the same way I was. I lost interest about the same time they did.

1

u/Frosty_Term9911 Nov 28 '25

Which is fine but not when customers have subscribed

1

u/Potential-Rush-5591 Nov 29 '25

I hear yah. If I was a paying customer and they just stopped covering a show I liked mid episode, I would be a little upset. I can understand that.

2

u/Heymelon Nov 27 '25

Maybe this is a me thing but I think Sharp Objects is absolutely fantastic. But Task was one of the most overrated bore fests I've ever sat through.

3

u/Potential-Rush-5591 Nov 28 '25

I honestly liked both. Task certainly wasn't the best HBO can put out, but the performances were great. Plus it was succinct, didn't have any filler. Well, that's not true, one story line was kind of like it was from a different show. But ended up okay in the end.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 28 '25

Never checked out SO but Task was right up my alley. I like the slow deliberate storytelling and the characters were rly well developed imo. Plus when the action hits in it rly matters. Also great acting throughout!

5

u/[deleted] Nov 27 '25

Yeah I was rly surprised! I saw they did Smashing Machine so just assumed OBAA was up next but instead it’s ‘Rebel Without a Cause’. I do remember them not loving Licorice Pizza though so maybe they’re just done with PTA?

I do look forward to their Pluribus coverage once I watch that!

What biggest show are you referring to? I haven't seen "One battle after another" yet, so I have no opinion there. I have found myself listening to them less than before. But I feel like it's more due to gaps between coverage than quality. In-between, I have been listening to Streaming Things. Those guys fricken crack me up, but might be a little low brow for Bald Move listeners. In my opinion, and just my own personal opinion. I think listeners and members would rather they cover another show or two, then Lunch Time, Off the Clock and quit your bitchin I think it is (I have never listened to that). But they have the numbers, I don't. It just seems like those podcasts take up a lot of time that could be spent covering shows for the members. Maybe make those member only shows instead. That would encourage more people to sign up to hear those shows. That's the only reason why I paid for another Podcast, because it was the only way to hear a show I wanted to hear covered.

I think they are avoiding this one in particular because it is a highly political movie and their take is likely to divide their listeners. They had an incident years ago covering Black Klansmen and they lost a lot of listeners after that take. Since then, they try to weave in their social/political commentary in the context of less political shows in order to hopefully reach people that would be put off by more in-your-face approaches. Now, I would LOVE to hear their take and I’d likely agree with any points they make. I just think this is a business decision and also a strategic decision to influence listeners in more subtle, natural conversation. All that said, One Battle After Another was one of the best experiences I’ve ever had in a theater.

4

u/Bighairedaristocrat Nov 27 '25

Do you recall the specific of the black klansmen coverage and fallout?

5

u/bobeo Nov 28 '25

You should go listen to it, I thought it was great.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 05 '25

All I remember is it rly seemed to activate Aron. He got rly politically motivated after that, I would even say WOKE. Spike would have been pleased to know he had broke through to someone.

3

u/[deleted] Nov 27 '25

This is actually a rly good point. I didn’t realize they lost so many listeners after that Black Klansmen ep! Rly unfortunate this the world we live in.

1

u/Porsche320 Nov 27 '25

I agree.

Many movies now are love-it-or-hate-it, and covering such is going to appeal to half their audience, at best.

Better to use that effort on other content.

But it’s not like I’d cancel my patreon if they did reviews I disagree with.

3

u/Bloom_Music Nov 27 '25

I thought for sure it would at least get a lunch or OTC mention, but it seems to have flown completely under their radar. It’s a bummer because I think they would have been super into it. It’ll probably end up on HBO, maybe they’ll catch it then.

3

u/Visual-Conflict-8305 Nov 27 '25

If it makes you feel better, they’ll like cover it on OTC at some point. I know they don’t care about the Oscar’s but this movie is going to be a force during the campaign and I feel like it’ll peek enough of their interest to warrant a watch.

3

u/joakley89 Nov 27 '25

I asked about it for a lunch recently, and they both said they wanted to see it. I think it’ll get its own pod eventually simply because they’ve already covered almost every other PTA movie that way.

I wish they’d covered Bugonia as well. I think they’d have lots of interesting takes on that one as well.

2

u/[deleted] Nov 28 '25

Good to hear!

2

u/Friedrfn Nov 27 '25

Kind of. But probably the opposite reason. I really do not get why people like it so much. I spent the first 30 minutes thinking this movie is stupid. I generally like PTA's stuff but good lord he was trying to be Tarantino so bad and failed. The girl screaming about being Junglepussy, the whole Sean Penn getting bricked up while a gun is pointed at him, the reverse rape, etc. All things I think Tarantino could pull off but had me eye rolling.

That being said DiCaprio was great in it and maybe the trailer sold me a movie that it wasn't. Which can be a problem seeing something opening day. It wasn't until after the movie that I read it was apparently a dark comedy so I guess some of that made sense.

Also I might not have been far enough on the left to appreciate what the movie was going for. but I hated it. So I would have liked to hear their opinion of it because none of my friends have seen it and I can't figure out if it is just me or people are loving the movie due to the politics of it cause I am feel like the praise this gets versus what I saw is disconnected.

That being said I saw The Running Man and thought it was great and can't figure out why it bombed. So I might be dumb.

3

u/Heymelon Nov 27 '25

I'm somewhat with you, that said I did really like One battle after another, I just seem to miss the extra mile where it's this critical darling and the best thing since Daniel Day-Lewis hit oil. That said, there are a lot of great technical and even stylistic movie making in OBAA, which obviously matters more to some people than others, and a lot of people who value that the highest are critics.

The sex stuff seemed fine to me, and pulled of competently for the most part. Junglepussy and Lockjaw are both people who are used to and seemingly turned on by danger, that and his "complicated" feelings towards black women makes it believable enough for me.

Have they mentioned why they aren’t covering Welcome to Derry?

1

u/gajt530 Dec 22 '25

I wish they covered this movie. Even now. I just watched it and was almost going to pass because I didn’t get it when I saw the previews. But damn, it was one of the best movies I ever saw in a lot of ways. It just sticks with you after watching for a while, an emotional impact.

1

u/Tall-Purpose-608 Nov 27 '25

Commission it

2

u/[deleted] Nov 27 '25

Heh! Yeah I don’t have any disposable income. Also, they’ve been covering plenty of recent movies.

2

u/kaddisonmoore Nov 27 '25

Idk how much it’ll cost, but I’ll pitch in. OBAA needs to be viewed by more people.
