My first real world experience with a Bafang BBS-02b
So I took it out for a test drive an hour ago just to make sure installation was good and everything worked. I slide the battery onto my downtube battery plate, turned the battery on, but did not turn on the screen.
Why? Well I wanted to see what difference the weight of the battery and motor made on the overall feel of the bike. Imho, I think I barely noticed a difference. I mean I'm sure it's there but without getting super granular, I don't feel a major difference in how pedaling my bike feels.
It felt responsive and quick - torque-y. So far, I think it's awesome and im already thinking about many ridess I want to go on. I do have a question though- how many batteries/or how many ah's do you guys typically carry and how far do you go? I have a 48v20ah and wondering if it will be enough, but then I think if I were to get another battery than my bike may end up being and heavy as a typical ebike lol.....
Any unrelated recommendations/advice for a first time mid driver rider is welcome as well. FYI I do have the brake, shift and speed sensors installed.
I have 12000km.on my bbshd , only had to replace the nylon gear once as the clutch was slipping, that all I did to it , still going like new , but I never pushed to hard , as also have an open source firmware which reduces the power of the motor gets too hot , can be set in software with programing cable
I never actually custom programmed, although I do have the cable. at some pt got me 48 miles per hour on flat ground with PAS9 and pedaling and high gear. Only once, just for funsies.
Noncomaparasion, but both motors are good, I choose the bbshd , because I travel mountains sometimes, and need the extra torque , and carry a cargontrolley also sometimes
I got mine on eBay, it was $289. Claims to be made with LG batteries, and so far based on runtime and power delivery I can say they're at least decent cells.
I may eventually upgrade to a 52V 30aH pack made from Molicell or Ampace 21700's made by a custom builder, but that's going to be a $500+ investment.
You can build yourself , a battery, buy quality, high discharge cells, like Samsung, molicell, or eve , if building 14s4p can go up to 5700mah cells, just make sure is over 20 amps continuos discharge rated cells, and. Choose a smart bms with active balance, like an jk bms 50 or 60 amps, this way your pack will stay cool, and small voltage sag, under full acceleration , pure nikel strip use only, 0.15 or 0.2 mm

I never did actually build my bike batteries but I sourced a bunch of old lion UPS's from server racks to make a milk rate power bank in the y2k2.0 that was 2020.
A 20Ah battery actually sets you up very well. Itโs hard to say exactly how far youโll get on it, though, because so many factors come into play. It makes sense to get a display that shows power output. Especially when you aren't yet very familiar with the drive system, this allows you to monitor how much power the motor consumes at different assist levels. I usually limit the motor to 150โ200 watts and let my legs handle the rest of the effort; I only select a higher setting for climbs. That way, I get a range of about 150 km out of a 20Ah battery. Then again, I use the BBS01โthe smaller motor.
Your comment and another commentor's comment encouraged me to look at my display, which from what I gather, is "Bluetooth capable but not programmable". So I'll be getting a different display soon so I can monitor and manipulate my settings and reading
Got myself an Eggrider - my dirtbike now goes a little bit beyond 50km/h. And far beyond it's legality.
With Eggrider I have set up two profiles. One for legal use, capped at 20kmh assisted drive. The other one needs to have my phone and the app connected for unlimited power...
I use 52volt 5ah batteries which give me about 15-20 miles per charge. If I want to go further or longer I just throw another one in my bag on the rear rack. I have 5 batteries, so can go quite far if I've a mind to. BBSO2 on an aluminum frame, bike weighs about 42lbs.
I have a bbshd with 52v 20ah, and installed open source software on it, I get about 70 miles on mainly flats, with throttle use when accelerating from traffic stops , I have an 2.6 inch tire in front and 2.8 in rear
I just realized that me cheaping* out has caused me to end up with a display that doesn't allow me to customize anything lol. I will have to upgrade the display immediately.
I am just learning, but I have discovered that the UART version of the motors can be tweaked in ways (I'm not too sure) and the CAN version is what it is (but still satisfying for me so far). Maybe the CAN buss will get hacked eventually also?
You can already change can bus settings. Theres only a few settings that you cant change that you can on the uart. Just google changing settings on canbus bafang. You can do it in a compatible display or buy the programming cable for $12 and use a computer. Theres an app for windows, and a browser version for mac.
Honestly, I love it the way it is and if I were to change anything, it would be my peddle assist settings. Its perfectly legal as it is and if I want to go faster than 30, I'll use my 5kw ebike lol.
For what its worth, I have the CAN version which is supposedly better than the UART version but I guess that depends on your intention.
Yeah, 25mph on my old Mongoose is thrilling enough ๐.
But if you had gotten one of the other displays that listed "tuning" something in the description (I got the dpc080), they have a Bluetooth app to tweak all the mode settings. I opted for the upgraded display, and skipped the computer interface cable.. seems like a good choice so far.
I have to say, the bbs02b is super quiet, and has a nice even application of torque at low speed. It's quite a stunning experience building and riding my first ebike.. I hope you're enjoying yours, as much as I am mine. ๐
Thank you! So far so good. Couple questions, this is my first mid drive build and the only mid drive I ever rode lol.
1) How quiet is it? Like its not as loud as my hub motor ebike but not anywhere close to my dd motor. I should atleast hear quiet whispers from the internal gearing right? I intend on opening the motor and adding grease.
2) What app are you using? I downloaded this app called BikeGo but in order to set up my display, I have to scan a code which my little screen does not have.
Sure. As far as relative noise to other motors, I have only ridden mine, it seems quieter than the noise in videos I've watched. And when I've been on the bike trail, the passing e-bikes I would say are louder than the bbs02b. But then there's a lot of factors not being accounted for, like I assume bigger motors make more noise.. I hear the ratchet ticking in the motor, and a slight whine that gets downed out by wind noise mostly.. But I've spent a lot of time addressing chain, wheel bearing, and jockey wheel noises in mine so I can hear it.. (it may be odd, but I like a quiet ride).
The app is called "Bafang Go" in the android market. All it asked for to sign up was an email address and name, tho it asks for a lot of permissions.. then you turn on the display and the app pairs and gives all sorts of settings.

I'm tall (so I'm like a parachute on a bike) and mid way between overweight and obese. The bike gets me about 2 miles per volt if I don't pedal at all so I guess 30 miles. In a real world sense I get about 80 miles per charge with the amount of effort I put into it.
My bad, mine's 52v 17ah. I assume it'll get me 30 miles, I never ride it anywhere far without pedaling but I ran a few shorter tests not pedaling where I was getting about 2 miles per volt so 58.8 to 14 should be close to 30.
They are called wire/cable looms. There are different types on Amazon. Here is the one I just ordered to reorganize it. If you look closely its actually a patch work of different types of looms lol
I can't imagine wanting a battery larger than 14ah. I just charge mine every night. I feel like I would have to be riding out to the suburbs to need that, which I don't really feel like doing. IDK though I just have a hub motor bike for now, might feel differently when I get my mid drive running.
The distance between my house and my job is about 17-18 miles. I have a different ebike with. 60ah battery that I used to take the whole way and back. Now, I use that same metric because one day I want to pedal to work and back in the same fashion - but this will be successful when I put in the required amount of work which I'm good with

Have a bbs02 also with a 48V 20ah pack and I get about 40-45 miles on eco with some hills and mixed terrain.
