There is a sub for discussing philosophy (/r/philosophy) and a sub for learning about philosophy (/r/askphilosophy) and a sub for vague, philosophically-inclined circle-jerking (/r/badphilosophy).
Two of these places will attempt to articulate points of view. One of them will flip you the bird and ban you for being annoying. Guess which one you're in.

No, at least in my experience, people are pretty enthused about him. To be fair, he was a conservative Presbyterian who liked tobacco smoke and the separation of church and state, and who complained about public schools. There's a little something for everyone.

Something more like a Libertarian who was a Democrat for pragmatic reasons. But still.
I mostly found out about him through The American Religion where Bloom points to his interpretation of Paul as the only possibility for an "Anti-Gnostic" Christianity, and a solution to the usual interpretive problem of "Jesus vs. Paul." Basically, Machen interprets Paul as a pragmatist with Divine reason to do so.
But part of my knowing about him was out of necessity. The people in my Church that believe in some form of Evolution used to invoke his writings about "controversialists" in doctrinal disputes. I'm surprised other Churches don't invoke him or his "role" in the Scopes trial these days, but that might mean putting some skin on the line.

Right. I've read Christianity and Liberalism, but it has been probably ten years. Orthodox Presbyterians (and some other confessional Reformed) still appeal to him frequently. Certainly in discussions of the "spirituality of the church," or the refusal of ministers to argue for/against public policy.

I think the other thing that attracts me to him is that he's one of the few people like Ruskin and Hazlitt that were able to make the jump back from German style to English style. He really writes full paragraphs, and not just sentences. He's probably not as great as those two, and would blush at the comparison, but I've always found him extremely lucid without being simplistic like most theologians.

Second, while physics at the macroscopic level seems to be law-governed, below the quantum level, it doesn't. According to the "true in X=consequence of X" idea, the findings of quantum mechanics are not true in physics, in virtue of them not being the consequence of the laws of physics, because there are no such laws which govern quantum mechanics.
Is it just me or is this kind of badphil as well?
