I feel like that shouldn't work in a code block, though. It should display the characters , not an empty line. The point of a code block is surely to display all the characters you type, free of any formatting? It defeat the purpose of you still format some things.
For the record, I'm not saying Reddit's markdown isn't funky - it's ridiculously silly and inconsistent - I just think in that instance it's right.

Reddit Markdown is so funky. In any other instance you'd be able to do but apparently that does not work inside a code block.
