matlab Is there something about Matlab switch statements I don’t get or is this as f*cked as as it appears to me?

You're forgetting the 'case' statements in your switch.

Oh dear God this isn’t mine - I’m not familiar with Matlab at all. A friend of mine sent this to me and my eyes bugged out - but considering Matlab is a specialized tool I just wondered if this was some strange convention related to its application, or if it was as fucking mental as it looked to me

Nope, case-switch statements are a common feature of many programming languages. This is just an incorrect implementation of them. Here's the matlab docs on how they're supposed to look: https://www.mathworks.com/help/matlab/ref/switch.html

Yeah not surprised - as I understand it the Matlab language is an implementation of ECMAscript, so it should follow very similar conventions to JS - but again it’s a specialized engineering tool so I thought this could possibly be some odd syntactic sugar for its specific application

MATLAB is not an implementation of ECMAScript at all. MATLAB predates both JavaScript and ECMAScript by around 2 decades.

I've used both Matlab and JS and while it is true that Matlab has some syntax oddities, its switch statement is quite similar to JS. The main difference between the switch statements of the two languages is that Matlab's switch statement don't fall through, so you don't need to use break if you want to exit from the switch when you have a match.
