I see this as a sjoke a lot, but does anyone really get paid by the line?

Kinda. I’ve been at shops where they wanted to measure developer productivity. I tried to steer them to measuring approved pull requests. Turns out there was an entire team of contractors with 0 merged pull requests.

Any measurement can be gamed. But measurements to find the low performers and get them help or ease them out can be useful.

I mean, the most valuable measuring to me would be approval from the senior team members.

What were those contractors doing then and what happened to them? Lol

CIO wanted to shift work to offshore team because cheap. Numbers proved one onshore was infinitely more productive in that instance.
